My Mom bought a 98 Cherokee Sport in October 1997 and she said this was the best car she ever owned. A little over six years later this became my car and it lasted another six years. Had some electrical issues (fuel gauge was useless) and one or two major repairs, but when it came down to it this was one reliable vehicle. Fuel economy was decent (16 city/21 hwy), ride was fairly comfortable, and the 4x4 was outstanding. Had to trade her in at 140,595 miles, loved her so much got another Jeep (06 Wrangler Sport, like this one too) but I will always miss her. Honestly, if they still made these Cherokees I wouldve gotten one.

I have to say that my Cherokee has got to be the best vehicle I have ever owned. Not the most reliable or fun to drive, but simply thie best overall package. While it seems outdated compared to all of the newer small SUVs out there (including the Liberty), it has a charm that is timeless. The biggest problem Ive had has been the power window regulators. Highway fuel economy is great for a 30 year old I6 engine design, I get about 17/24 mpg.

My 1998 XJ was given to me by my father. Although it is rather old it still can open up and be just as powerful as the day my family bought it. So far it has over 210,000 miles on it and still runs and looks like a champ. There hasnt been a single time Ive been stuck somewhere or unable to get where I needed to go. Service on this Jeep is nearly never needed as long as the oil gets changed and the gas if full. The only issue Ive had is with the gas mileage. However, you can have gas mileage or you can have power and a strong, well- built car.

Bought it NEW in 98, now have 136K on it. Have the 4.0 L I-6 motor & 5 speed manual tranny -- super strong. 23 mpg highway is FAB for a boxy SUV this capable. Like the look, like the color (chili pepper red), like the performance, LOVE the durability. NO major repairs. Biggest repair item has been waterpump. HUGE value for the money. We have the cheap dash w/ idiot lights, and the gas gauge has had problems for years. My wifes vehicle, and it does all our "dirty work" hauling stuff, and ALL snow duty. Interior is plain, back seat best for kids, but tolerable for 1 - 2 hour trips for adults. I see these Cherokees ROUTINELY go 250-300K. 4WD is easy to use. ALL JEEP, ALL GOOD.

  • Great price on OK vehicle - 1998 Jeep Cherokee

Im an 18 year old high school student and have had this car almost a year. Bought it to replace my 94 accord. Paid $10,000 for it with ~42,000 miles! Has every option except leather. Gas milage sucks at 13mpg in the city, but then again, I am a lead footed teen. The car seems to like to break on me. Replaced transfer case 3 times, drive shaft twice and rear differential twice, all on Keffers tab! Only other money spent out of pocket has been a set of tires and rear brakes (oil changes and gas dont count!)

267,000 miles...more worried about the rust possibilities than anything mechanical. It is a dependable tank. Not glamorous, just reliable

Coming up on 5 years of ownership. This is the bright red (Flame Red) Jeep color. Paint has held up extremely well. Mechanically, this has been a very sound car. I have the 4.0 6 cyl. engine. "Bullet proof." This is the 3rd Jeep Cherokee that I have owned. Quite pleased and a safe car. Easy to maintain and very reliable. Ride is more "truck like" than a Grand Cherokee - I own one of those, too...Make no mistake - in the snow or in slick conditions the Cherokee out- performs the Grand Cherokee

What is not to like about this car? Its beautiful, fun to drive, RELIABLE, and has a spunky engine.

I have owned this vehicle for almost 6 years. I have not had one problem with it. It is strong and reliable. Suprisingly good handling. Jeeps are great vehicles that are fun to drive in every condition (except windy conditions). This truck combines the rough and rugged with a taste of luxury with its leather seats and steering wheel and 10 cd disc changer. I give it two thumbs up.

  • I adore my jeep. I want to marry it. - 1998 Jeep Cherokee

I really love this car. It was my dads until two years ago when he gave it to me for my sixteenth birthday. Its fun to drive -lots of power, and its never had to go into the shop for anything major. In almost 3 years Ive put about 70,000 miles on it because I travel a ways to school, but the only problem is that sometimes- in very cold weather- it doesnt want to start immediately...and thats not too much of an inconvienence. And the gas milage isnt terrible for an SUV-I get about 23 mpg. It still runs great and I could drive it forever. I love my jeep, I really do.
