This Year's Model Updates:

Air conditioning becomes standard equipment on GS and GL models. Otherwise, Hyundai's bargain-basement car soldiers on to 2002 with no changes in store.

Pros:
  • Smooth ride, low price, impressive powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Unrefined demeanor, lack of standard equipment and amenities.

  • It goes and goes and goes... - 2002 Hyundai Accent

Purchased this car brand new in summer 2002, it was my first new car. I was young, didnt shop around a lot and basically got it because it was in my price range. Ive been pleasantly surprised with it. Very reliable. Has been in the shop only for minor issues (the power windows, the rear wiper and a problem with the idle), all of which were covered by warranty. Great gas mileage on highway (av. 36)...only okay "mixed" (av. 26). I love my little car, though Im thinking of trading it for something slightly larger that would be a little more comfortable on road trips. (I will miss the MPG if that happens!) Has been a reliable car that got me through college and is still going into adulthood.

  • This car is a blast to drive. - 2002 Hyundai Accent

I was in the market to replace my worn out, trusty Metro (258k) and frankly was shocked about how it was nearly impossible to get a base model commuter car for less than $13000.00 I looked at Saturn, Honda, Toyota and by the time I added air, cd player, power windows, door locks I was in the neighborhood of $15000.00+ I was pleasantly surprised when I drove the Hyundai Accent GS. The DOHC is smooth and with the 5 speed tranny is really fun to drive. It rides, handles great and air conditioning is a standard feature. So I ended up with GS with the Option 3 package (power windows, mirrors, door locks). Factor in the warranty and it was a no brainer decision. The total cost was $10400.00

Purchased new and drove 90000 miles. Most of the issues occurred in ownership year 3 or 4. Exterior: perfect with the exception of peeling hubcaps and rusty wiper arms, interior the lights in the heater area would go on and off. 2 Warranty issues. Codes Check engine required sensors and through-out bearing replaced the whole transmission under warranty. Great car low cost to maintain, insure, fuel.

I have driven this car for 6 mos./7500 miles. The driving behavior of this vehicle (engine/transmission, acceleration/speed, cornering, stopping, etc.) is smooth and first rate. The interior is thoughtfully designed and well appointed. Space/comfort for front/back is suprisingly very good for a subcompact. Final word: I am a concientious consumer. And I consider this car the very best bang for the buck.

This was my first ever car! It recently got totaled in an accident (other persons fault). I didnt have on a seat belt and walked away with some minor bruises! This little car is safe reliable and GREAT on gas! I would have rode this car til the wheels fell off if it hadnt been totaled!

Bought the car in 2002 - first transmission oil change was around 45,000 mi, I changed the timing belt around 69,000 but the mechanic told me tha124,141,799t was still in good condition and changed the spark plugs and the belts for water and alternator around 90,000 mi other than that just oil change (only synthetic) and tires. I have 107,000 mi and no problem I get 31 mi/gallon in city driving

  • My little go-cart - 2002 Hyundai Accent
    By -

This was like a go-cart because of its size and power. A 1.4L is a weak engine, but I assure you it has pickup and I would whip this car around. I drove it hard, but not crazy. No major problems with anything though I have broke both door handles by pulling on them the wrong way. Regular oil changes and sensible (not conservative) driving have me at 92000 miles. I can tell the car is on its way out though. There is a hole somewhere in the exhaust and I just have this feeling that a bunch of things are about to be worn out. Great buy, great car for 8k. Would definitely buy a Hyundai again, its just simply worth the money (no headaches at 92000)

  • Wish Id shopped around more - 2002 Hyundai Accent
    By -

What a disappointment! I bought this car brand new with only a few miles on it from the test drive. In August 2008, Id have owned the car for 6 years and have only put about 48,000 miles on it. As of last week, it sits dead in front of my house. One year after purchase, the Power Relay went (covered by warranty) in 2006 the engine was really loud, turned out to have a hole in the exhaust and needed to replace some sensors over the next several months- more than once! Had to replace the e-brake and have work done on other brakes in 8/06 as well. By 7/08, need e-brake again, check engine light on, timing belt broke while driving and wrecked the engine. Cheaper to buy another than fix this!

  • Best car Ive ever had in my life - 2002 Hyundai Accent
    By -

I bought my accent brand new and never have had any problems with it. I have always kept up maintenance in the car myself. It has never been in a mechanic shop or dealer shop for anything. I now(07/08) have 200,000 miles on it and it is still going strong even after driving it very hard its whole life. It seems like nothing will ever make it quit running. I have a very heavy foot and it doesnt ever phase it. There are also no oil leaks or burn off and has the original plug wires. I have also hit a wild hog and run over a curb at 55mph and it only bent the wheels and didnt cause any other damage. I still to this day get around 40 mpg on the highway and 35 in town.

  • A great throw away care - 2002 Hyundai Accent
    By -

I bought this car in 2004, it had 13K miles on it. Thank God I had at least half the manufacturers warranty on it. I had to have both power window tracks placed - I had to have the TP sensor replaced. I have regular maintenance on this car, I use it to get back and forth to work. Ive put the average 10-11K miles on it every year. It has 54K miles on it now and its in the garage getting the transmission rebuilt. I know this is a cheap but if youre having to replace your tranny after 50K miles you might has well just spend the money up front for a better made vehicle.
