Overview & Reviews
Air conditioning becomes standard equipment on GS and GL models. Otherwise, Hyundai's bargain-basement car soldiers on to 2002 with no changes in store.
- Smooth ride, low price, impressive powertrain warranty.
- Unrefined demeanor, lack of standard equipment and amenities.

Premature transmission & engine failure - 2002 Hyundai Accent
By TD - March 25 - 11:13 pmThis car was good for the first few years then fell apart! Transmission started ti disconnect & buck. Took to dealership at 85000 KMS when this happend-and they just changed the fluid, told me the car would be fine. But it wasnt! Hyundai didnt want to fix the car at all! Had to fight to get them to cover just the part (paid labour). Then the timing belt went prematurely at 91000 KMS, and did almost $2000 damage to the engine. Hyundai insists there is no problem with their vehiles even though there was a TSB announcement on the 2002 Accents transmissions! The sensors had to be replace on my car too at 80000 kms.

Dealers are rip-offs - 2002 Hyundai Accent
By KK - February 21 - 11:45 pmPreviously, I wrote my review about the transmission braking at 69,000 miles and the dealer said they wont honor the warranty because the transmission wasnt flushed. I went to AAMC for a replacement and paid $2800. I wrote a letter to Hyundai Corp. telling them what happened. I received a call from the corp. office. After I sent all the documentation to prove I still owned the car and the receipt from AAMCO, I received a check for the full amount I paid for the transmission. I found that its not the Hyundai Manufacturer, its the DEALER that rips people off. If you have any problems, go directly to the manufacter not the dealer!

More than I could afford - 2002 Hyundai Accent
By BG - February 20 - 12:41 pmGot car used w/11k miles on it, have had nothing but problems with it.I dont know how many sensors this thing had but I think I have replaced them all. Also, transmission went at 77k mi after I brought it in several times for the same problem (over a couple of yrs), either that or the dealership got tired of trying to fix it, it was not covered by the warranty. Horrible to drive in the snow, its like rubbing crisco on the tires then driving in the snow. I spent more time getting it fixed and money on this car (seemed to be something every 3 months)than what it was worth. Traded it in w/the check engine, brake & battery lights on got $1400 for it, though I would have paid them to take it.

Great small car - 2002 Hyundai Accent
By heyjoe - January 20 - 5:58 pmGreat gas mileage 36-37 mpg highway. Best vehicle Ive ever owned when it comes to reliability, only 1 small repair charge in 100,000 miles. Interior design and style much better than other cars in the size range that I considered buying. I will probably drive it for many more miles, still looks great inside and out.

Life is not easy! - 2002 Hyundai Accent
By joe - January 16 - 1:24 pmIm sorry for people that have gotten a poor quality Hyundai accent. I bouth this thing in Dec. 2001, ato commute and put almost 16000 miles a year. Now it has 81500 and still working. Just took it twice to the dealer to change the battery (at 5000) and then at 45000 miles to change the engine belts and check the front brakes, they did not do a good work on the front brakes. Im planning to take it at 90000 to change the belts again and to fix the rear brakes. The reason I do not take it to the dealer is because this thing has never given any trouble, i do not like it and Im not going to spend money on it.

Stylish affordable new car - 2002 Hyundai Accent
By Jerry007 - January 12 - 10:00 amWhen I was looking for a new car to replace my very first car I thought about buying another used car but one time I looked though the weekly paper and I saw a new Accent for $6999 advertised I was surprised. I heard the 2000 to present models were 20 times better then the old models I never thought about buying Hyundai due to poor quility of eariler models. But when I test drove it the build quility and ride was soild and quite then the Accent I drove in 1997.I relly liked the two door style better then the four door. The two door has a more attractive front grile and tail lights.Gas milege is great im getting about 30 mpg.

Great entry level car. - 2002 Hyundai Accent
By Jason McGovern - January 12 - 2:00 amIf you talk the dealer down, you can buy a new one of these for around 11,500 with Auto Trans. WIth being a little car, this thing can get moving when it needs to. The interior is fairly basic, and compact. I am 61" and it was ok sizewise. All Hyundais come with a 5 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty. If something goes wrong, you take it in. But car reliability also depends on the driver. This is no sports car, so dont drive it like one and it will last.

Hyundai warranty is a joke!! - 2002 Hyundai Accent
By KK - September 16 - 5:43 amAt 69,000 miles, the transmission broke. They wouldnt pay for it, because, changing the fluid twice was not enough. Since I didnt also have it flushed, they wont pay for the repair! AAMCO repaired it for $2600 and assured me it had nothing to do with flushing. It was a part that went bad and he see it all the time because its the kind of transmission they use. Also,I had the dealer check my brakes a couple of time and they said theyre ok. Then a few months later tell me the whole cylinders were broke and they wont pay for it because its neglect!! Hyundai does not honor their warranty! Ill never buy a Hyundai again!

Wish I would have saved my money - 2002 Hyundai Accent
By Candy - August 7 - 1:01 amThis was my first car and Im not happy with it. 1st year was okay but after that all down hill. Check engine light keeps coming on after car has been worked on. Back seat is cramped. Warranty would be good but the only dealership that is close to me does horrible work if any at all. Gas mileage is great when car doesnt over rev before I even shift it out of park. Handling is okay as long as the road is not wet. Car tends to fishtail on any road with more than a few drops of water on it. The breaks squeak like crazy when it rains and after it rains. And forget about decent pick up. Also for some reason the performance of the car plummets when AC is on.
