Overview & Reviews
A new steering wheel and instrument panel freshen the Explorer's interior. New wheels are the only exterior changes. Explorers gain four-wheel antilock brakes that work in both two- and four-wheel-drive modes.

Overall Average Reliability - 1993 Ford Explorer
By hockey_fan28 - June 8 - 2:00 amA pretty good vehicle overall, but does show signs of age after 7 years old. Engine power is not great, but its enjoyable to ride in.

163K - 1993 Ford Explorer
By fuzzywuz - February 5 - 2:00 amGood SUV until the transmission went out @ 163,000. But that should be expected. Before that barely any problems to mention.

XLT is worth it - 1993 Ford Explorer
By Matt Parker - December 22 - 2:00 amI found it to be very clean running, fuel efficiant (13 miles per gallon) with manual five-speed, and a 4.0 Liter V6 Engine. The engine has never given me problems. All I ever get is compliments on how confortable and smooth the ride was from passengers. Cargo space, the rear seats fold down which gives out about 6+ feet of room. Although the seats do not fold down all the way, leaving you with a bed that slants at 10 degrees. The paint fades. So, a wax job is needed after cleaning the truck at least every week. The truck is small enough to fit tigh spaces and has a tight turning radius. While still having tons of room for cargo and passengers.

Still going ... ! - 1993 Ford Explorer
By BooFred - December 10 - 2:00 amI bought my 93 XLT with 157,000 miles on it. Im up to 211,000 with absolutely no problems. Even with 7" of lift, 33" tires and alot of performance and handling upgrades, she still screams. Those 4.0L motors wont quit.

Been a good Truck - 1993 Ford Explorer
By bradski - October 9 - 2:00 amI have had explorer 10 years this month. Im turning 200k this month and have not had to do anything but standard maintenance. However, Im starting to hear some internal engine noise (lifter?) Primarly used for family travel. Started using a quart of oil every 1200 miles at about 180k. Changed oil every 3000, but never.. never gave tune-up. It was still getting 15 - 17 MPG!.

Even now she still surprises me! - 1993 Ford Explorer
By Voodard - September 4 - 2:00 amWith over 168,000 miles on the original transmission and engine this truck continues to amaze us. Though 130k miles is freeway commuter trips and the remaining city driving, this truck has yet to give us any major repair bills (knock on wood). The leather was well worn, so I installed beautiful Wet Okole seat covers and she looks new again! Well done Ford! Look at how many of the pre-1995 Explorers are still on the road next tiem youre on the interstate, it will surprise you.

Ford Explorer Review - 1993 Ford Explorer
By JOE - August 19 - 2:00 amWhen I bought my Explorer I loved it. Last year my transmission started to go out and its been downhill since. I have talked to a lot of Explorer owners and found that they also have had to replace their transmission for the same model.
