This Year's Model Updates:

Redesigned last year, the Expedition offers few changes for 2004. Option packages and trim levels have been slightly revised, and in some cases, renamed. The XLS replaces last year's XLT Value trim level, while a new NBX trim level replaces the FX4 off-road package. And there is now an XLT Sport trim level. A tire-pressure monitoring system is now standard on XLT, XLT Sport and Eddie Bauer, while the previously standard limited-slip rear axle is now an option.

Pros:
  • Well thought-out interior with plenty of room for passengers and their belongings, handy fold-flat third-row seat, impressive handling for its size, great crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Needs more power, ride quality suffers on rough roads.

Brake dust MAJOR problem with this truck, and Ford will do nothing about it.

POSITIVES: Great room for a family of 4 or 5. Plenty of luggage room for those long family trips. Eddie Bauers look great with the gold underpackage with pretty much any body color. NEGATIVES: Whats up with the brake dust? Wow, lets not skimp on quality brake pads. Also, middle seat in second row should recline with outside passenger seats. Third row seating leather has come unattached and not sure how to have it fixed. Looks crappy like that. Gas mileage is garbage but what can you expect from that large of a vehicle. The a/c fan inside the dash makes a light squealing sounds periodically and Im sure Ford wont hear it to fix it.

Recently upgraded from 1998 XLT 4x4 Expedition that was still excellent after 129,000 miles including 4,000 yearly miles towing a 7,000# travel trailer. The new 2004 Eddie Bauer feels stronger with the extra 30 HP with 5.4L engine. This one has everything except air suspension and navigation system. So far around town averaging 16.7 mpg. Other than rear axle whine which will be fixed next week am extremely happy with this vehicle. Ford hit the spot with this one!

Our 04 Expy EB with 4wd has been a great ride so far. We have been trouble and maintenance free and after 2.8 years of ownership @ 45k miles, we are very happy with it. Its a great SUV for long road trips, carrying large items, easily configurable for cargo, carries 8 comfortably for short trips and 6 for long trips. This truck has been reliable and safe. Am glad I did not invest in an extended warranty. We are still running on the original Contis and expect to get them to 50k or maybe 60k. It has not been in the shop for anything besides normal 5k maintenance and operating costs are minimal except for gas costs. The fuel costs are offset by carrying capacity for people and items.

  • My first Ford. - 2004 Ford Expedition

I used to drive a Jeep Wrangler and I was all about the 4 wheel dirve lift 35 inch tires all that. Well I sold it and got me an 04 Expedition and its great, not only did I get it for $24700 its proved very useful. Ive slept in it for days when it wouldnt stop raining while camping out. It was about 10 grand less than a tahoe as well. with the same options, well it has one more the keypad on the door I leave my keys in my cars all the time but now I can lock it. I tend to loose my keys thats why I do that, and where I live not too many cars are stolen. But all in all I love my new expedition, my only regret is not getting the 4 wheel drive.

Took the truck with a lease and traded my 91 Bronco in for it with 2500 down. Got kinda hammered with the payments but I needed soemthing new and something that had lots of space inside since I have a large family of 5 to move around. Truck runs really well and handles snow as well as can be expected. It sometimes wants to bring the backend around when turning in the snow but I think this is due to the length and me driving a Bronco for all the years I did. Just gotta get used to it. Gas mileage is pretty low, 28 gallon tank and I get about 260 miles to the tank. Better than my Bronco so I enjoy it. LOL Overall a nice truck

I test drive and have owned several different trucks from the Dodge Ram Hemi Crew Cab to the Chevy Trail Blazer LTZ North Face- I recently traded them both in for the Ford Expediton XLT 5.4L- I have never been so satisfied with the ride quality, quiet ride, comfortable seats, cargo room, transmission performance, squeek free interior and highway speed ride. I recently towed a 5300 lb trailer (6X12) and I did not know it was there. Braking performance is excellent and it cuts through the snow with ease. I bought my wife the new VW SUV in december, whcich is an excellent performer for a mid/lux/ SUV- but the fords ride quality can compete!!!

  • expect high maintenance $$$ - 2004 Ford Expedition

While my 1999 was under warranty I was forced to visit the dealer 4 times for repairs. But it was after the warranty period expired that things really started to go wrong. To date I have spent over $9,000 in repairs since the warranty expired. I am convinced that Ford sold me a defective vehicle and are continuing to sell this same vehicle still today. Sure the new one looks different, buts that’s just marketing hype. This vehicle hasn’t changed since 1999 just ask any honest engineer or maintenance technician at Ford and they will tell you that the only changes have been cosmetic.

I drive my Ford for work. Most of my miles are highway miles. The air conditioner went out early on. At 46,600 miles the transmission is out. It is out of warranty. The dealership did pick up $1000 of the $2k bill. A transmission should not go out at 46k miles. Funny thing is I had a Taurus that the air went out early and the transmission dropped at 60k. Ford seems to have problems with these. This is the last Ford I will ever buy. If you have to have a Ford-buy the extended warranty.
