This Year's Model Updates:

Redesigned last year, the Expedition offers few changes for 2004. Option packages and trim levels have been slightly revised, and in some cases, renamed. The XLS replaces last year's XLT Value trim level, while a new NBX trim level replaces the FX4 off-road package. And there is now an XLT Sport trim level. A tire-pressure monitoring system is now standard on XLT, XLT Sport and Eddie Bauer, while the previously standard limited-slip rear axle is now an option.

Pros:
  • Well thought-out interior with plenty of room for passengers and their belongings, handy fold-flat third-row seat, impressive handling for its size, great crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Needs more power, ride quality suffers on rough roads.

  • I really wanted to like this Truck. - 2004 Ford Expedition

On my third rear end covered by warranty. A ticking in the drivers side door that nobody can find, plastic cladding on doors are fading badly (garage kept), tire pressure monitors useless, paid for leather got something that isnt leather (perhaps it comes from plastic cows), tailgate has blisters in the paint, steering wheel cover falling off. All these issues are created by accountant driven engineering. On the up side I pull a 6500 lb boat and it does it quite well although I doubt it could pull the 8500 lbs its rated for. Handles well for a large truck. Excellent brakes. Engine performance from the 5.4 L is great. Climate control is good. Good winter vehicle. Inspires in all weather

Had problems with the steering and rust on the rear door while under warranty. Had problems with the differential seals 39,000. Brake seals went at 40,000 Caliper froze and destroyed front rotor at 51,000 Same caliper froze at 102,000 replaced rotor, break line, seals. Front bearing replaced at same time 2 months later at 104,000 rear wheel bearing went. Never use this for off road and very minimal light towing. All highway miles and very costly to own. Beware!

  • Buy Something Else - Its Crap! - 2004 Ford Expedition

The only thing I liked about this truck was the warning sensors for how close you are to objects when you back up. Other than that, I dont see myself buying another Ford Expedition (or Ford Anything) for a long time. Im glad I bought it - Easier to get rid of it when you own it. Ive only had it for about a year and it feels like its going to break down already. So many things squeak and there are so many interior noises that it makes the truck seem cheaply made and unsafe. Ford does have a wide variety of models to choose from but Id have to guess that one model is as bad as the next. On a positive note - the horn works well?

  • Good Truck ,Not reliable - 2004 Ford Expedition

This is my second Expedition, my other was an 03. While I do greatly apppreciate the interior design and roominess, the seats are not very supportive at all. My transmission went out at 60k miles, and I just put a new alternator in it. Now I am being told that the rear climate system needs a new motor. It thumps whenever you turn it on. It is just problem after problem with these Fords and I heavily reccomend you not buy one. I am going to trade in my Expedition for an 04 Chevrolet Tahoe LT. My Expedition is beautiful solid black with the chrome exhaust, but is certainly not beauiful for my pocket book! Go with the more reliable, cheaper to fix, better re-sale value GM Suvs. You will thank me

Auto reverse sensing mirrors are irritating as is easy exit seating. Transmission has made some loud bangs shifting into 4wd. Auto locks have pinched arms for both driver and passenger. Fuel mileage has finally reached 14 hwy in 2wd. Brake dust leaves front wheels black.

  • ASIAN MARKET SHOULD BE STUDIED - 2004 Ford Expedition

THE EXPEDITION IS A MUCH SOUGHT-AFTER SUV. FORD SHOULD CONFIGURE FACTORS SUCH AS ECONOMY, TORQUE, ETC.(ENGINEERIGNG) WITH INTERIORS. CAPTAINS CHAIR SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE. 6 CD CHANGER SHOULD BE STANDARD. AND HEADREST MORE ATTENTION AS HEIGHT IS TOO HIGH FOR SMALL 52" DRIVERS. SUVS ARE CONSIDERED SAFER SO THEY ARE USED AS EXECUTIVE VEHICLES, THUS IT IS VITAL FOR FORD TO RETROFIT MODELS AS EXECUTIVE VEHICLES. OTHERWISE EXPEDITION IS A RELIABLE VEHICLE AND I AM ON MY THIRD MODEL, TURNING OVER OLDER ONES TO SOME OF OUR SENIOR EXECUTIVES WHO GLADLY PAY FOR THESE KNOWING THE MAINTENANCE IS GOOD.

I drive my Ford for work. Most of my miles are highway miles. The air conditioner went out early on. At 46,600 miles the transmission is out. It is out of warranty. The dealership did pick up $1000 of the $2k bill. A transmission should not go out at 46k miles. Funny thing is I had a Taurus that the air went out early and the transmission dropped at 60k. Ford seems to have problems with these. This is the last Ford I will ever buy. If you have to have a Ford-buy the extended warranty.

The only thing I dont like about this model is the steering. It likes to go all over the road unless you have a deathgrip on it. Even small holes or bumps in the road can effect it.

  • Third Expedition a disapointment! - 2004 Ford Expedition
    By -

The brake dirt on front wheels should have been fixed along time ago! The sunroof sounds like a wind tunnel and has been in for unsuccessful repairs. The instument panel is hard to read and the warning panel is in bad area. This is my third and last expedition. The other two were good cars(1997 & 2000). This thing does not tow like the others either!

  • Well designed, but poorly constructed - 2004 Ford Expedition
    By -

We purchased this vehicule as a replacement for our Explorer since to accomodate our growing family. The vehicle interior is very well designed to accept the whole family and the load that comes with it. Its comfortable and has very good handling. BUT quality of the vehicle is mediocre: tinted windows appear somewhat dirty; windows are noisy when sliding up or down, various noises, windshield wipers that wont wipe, etc. Some problems have been fixed, and for the others, well, neither Ford nor dealer wants to help despite obvious problems confirmed by 3rd- party.
