This Year's Model Updates:

The Escape is Ford's new SUV. Smaller in size than the Explorer (and dwarfed by an Excursion), the 2001 Ford Escape competes in the same class as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Its main calling cards are an optional V6 engine and a large interior.

Pros:
  • Strong V6 engine, plenty of interior space, car-like road manners.
Cons:
  • Lacks the off-road capability of a truck-based SUV, barely adequate base engine, unknown reliability.

Some power could be sacrificed for better gas mileage. Nice ride and interior layout.

Weve got 33K miles now and things are starting to go wrong. The drivers door is sticking, the car stalled at 45 mph and its getting harder to start in cold weather. Overall its a good vehicle, but I wouldnt get the V-4. Stick with the V-6 and dont pay more than $22,000.

Bought v6 in April 01, Paid the 1st visit to the service dept for a check engine light by Aug 01. This started a series of diff lights coming on at diff times and many visits to the dealership-(thank goodness for warranty). Each time Id take it in and theyd fix a light of the month but no guar it would be "fixed". 27,0000 miles later and 10x to the dealership in 2 yrs was all I could handle. After it being in the shop 8, 9, 11 03 I traded it in and got a Nissan. The less than reassuring attitude from the Service Dept and Ford left me no choice but to find a reliable means of transportation for my family.

Great drive train power and response. Firm sporty ride for an SUV. Nice interior space and reasonable comfort.Get 4WD, the FWD spins tires alot on acceleration from stop in rain and snow because of overly responsive gas pedal. If they upgrade the interior I would buy another.

My Escape has been 100% dependable. The AWD sure is nice in the Wisconsin winters. I have switched to AWD at speeds up to 50 MPH without a glich. The V-6 engine is peppy enough for me. I dont go around "chirping tires" but its easy to do on this vehicle. During this past winter the low coolant light came on, and the coolant wasnt low. I never did get a good explanation on that one.

  • My wife drove it instead of her Maxima - 2001 Ford Escape

We have thoroughly enjoyed our Escape. It is versatile, peppy, fun to drive, and comfortable to ride. My wife liked it so well that she traded her 2000 Maxima for a 2003 Tribute, which of course is a cousin built in the same St. Louis plant and uses the same chassis and drive train as the Escape. I like the looks of the Tribute better, but the seats are more comfortable in my Escape.

  • "Leather" seating wearing out/cracking - 2001 Ford Escape

Love almost everything - agree w/many others that gearshifter is too long and gets in the way of the radio controls and the "tilt" could be better. My main problem has been with the seating surfaces. Ive had it into the dealer 4 times because the "leather" is thread-bare in the seams or is cracking. Weve never had problems with 4 other Ford vehicles with "leather" seats. Anyone else having this problem?

Fun to drive, poor on gas, wish there was a 5spd V6.

  • First Two Years - 2001 Ford Escape

Two years are almost up. 24000 miles and just some thoughts. Had to replce the tires at 23000, front end out of alghnmt. Check engine light came on and was fixed by dealer without problems. All in all, a good little truck (wagon?) that my wife loves and I would buy again.
