This Year's Model Updates:

The Escape is Ford's new SUV. Smaller in size than the Explorer (and dwarfed by an Excursion), the 2001 Ford Escape competes in the same class as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Its main calling cards are an optional V6 engine and a large interior.

Pros:
  • Strong V6 engine, plenty of interior space, car-like road manners.
Cons:
  • Lacks the off-road capability of a truck-based SUV, barely adequate base engine, unknown reliability.

Excellent 4x4 by Ford. Very roomy, handles well, great off-road and on. Superior in snow. I test drove both Toyota RAV4 & Honda CR-V and this was by far my choice. Handles better and cost was definitely a winner. You should consider it.

This vehicle is fun to drive and is ideal for "running the beaches." It is also extraordinarily sure-footed in the snow. Handles well on the highway as well as the city and the V-6 has power to spare. Wish I had bought 2 of them!

The only complaint I have about the Escapeis the cruise control button shape, it has a pointed edge and got caught on clothing and popped off several times the last time I just gave up on fixing it!

  • Great Truck! - 2001 Ford Escape

What I Love: Fun to drive, powerful, great in the snow, great payload for hauling cheese, rear seats fold down flat. What I Hate: I leave the lights on all the time - The truck "dings" for 30 seconds before turning off the lights - very annoying!, poor gas milage (17-18 in the city, 20-22 on the hwy, disapointing) Overall - I LOVE MY TRUCK!!

  • Pretty good little SUV! - 2001 Ford Escape

VERY GLAD I got extended warranty: hydraulic clutch master cylinder went at 42,000 miles, tranny/shift cable got sloppy and replaced at 48,000, EGR valve at 50,000. BUT, those are the ONLY problems Ive had on this little gem! Gas mileage: best = 29mpg on last long highway trip averaging 65mph worst = 18mpg in 4WD in messy snow storm with the defroster blasting. Im 61", 190lbs. Drivers seat and legroom very good for most trips. STILL very impressed with handling! 50k miles and never needed alignment. Could be a tad quieter on road, but cant complain given its overall utility. Good range on gears, though I keep wanting 6th gear the 2.0L could have handled it on the highway and given even better gas mileage.

I owned an xlt 4X4 for 4 yrs and just turned it in on lease. It was my wifes car and it was the first car she has owned and like for over 2 years. We had it in shop a couple of times for minor issues, although it was making a weird transmission noise when we turned it in. Overall, very nice to drive and decent mpg considering it is a SUV. Definitely get the XLT version for a nicer interior design and stay away from 4 cylinder (it has no power). The v6 takes off and has lots of jump at any speed. We would highly recommend over other SUV in its class.

Love the car. Plenty of interior space for a small suv. Im 64" and have plenty of driver room. Ive had it for almost 1 year and it has 60000 miles and I have had NO problems whatsoever. Great car.

  • 2 Escapes - 2001, and now 2002 - 2001 Ford Escape

This is our 2nd Escape - we had a 2001 2WD 6cyl XLT, and now have a 2002 4WD with leather, moonroof, all the options. Not sure if they made significant improvements from 2001 to 2002, or if its the 2WD to 4WD but this newer one is much tighter, more solid, more enjoyable. Seems quieter too. This has been a great vehicle for a multitude of purposes, from family vacations to business appointments to hauling.

  • best car i ever had until today - 2001 Ford Escape

i LOVE my escape. its the ideal car for us, and has never given us a problem unlike our last car, a 2000 volkswagon beetle which was a complete lemon. everything was great until today, when at 37,000 miles our brake light went on and lo and behold we find out the master cylinder is dead....$600 in repair bills later im wondering if anyone else has had this problem so early in the life of their escape?
