This Year's Model Updates:

The 2004 Ford Escape remains largely unchanged although the price has been lowered on the plush Limited model and certain appearance packages are now available on lower trim levels which, in effect, reduce the final price. Also, Chrome Yellow is no longer a color choice. To eliminate confusion, trim levels and option packages have been consolidated.

Pros:
  • Powerful V6, large cargo capacity, comfortable interior, carlike handling.
Cons:
  • Weak standard four-cylinder engine, bland interior design, small gas tank size limits range.

  • Handles well, broke down at 37,000 miles - 2004 Ford Escape

Handles well, plenty of storage. The cruise control is well-designed. Handles really well in poor weather, snow, heavy rain, etc. One small blind spot by the side view mirrors, but great visibility compared to other SUVs. Stopped running at 37K miles. Had to replace the MAF (a $325 repair). Didnt like that on a low mile vehicle thats been well-maintained.

  • My second one! - 2004 Ford Escape

All the comforts of a larger, heavier SUV, but lightweight ... and easy to handle. I love the ease of opening the hood and the back. Its great for women! Its my second Escape Limited and has wonderful leather seats that heat up.

  • I love my ESCAPE - 2004 Ford Escape

I bought it with 3 miles on it and now have about 9000. No problems at all. Great on gas. Its easy to handle. I went from an 02 Ranger to this 04 Escape and I am glad I did.

Wife and I are ski instructors and it handles wonderful in the snow and ice. Much better than our 2 previous Explorers. We have towed a 1100 lb flat bed trailer with no problem. Poor gas mileage for size of vehicle we average 17-18 MPG.

  • Blown engine - 2004 Ford Escape
    By -

My engine threw a rod at 34,311 miles and punched 2 holes in the block. Ford replaced it under warranty. If you buy a Ford make sure you are aware of their Road Side Assistance program and you also may want to get an extended warranty. They dont give you a replacement car or a rental without an extended warranty. I was without my vehicle for 2 weeks.

  • My favorite things - 2004 Ford Escape

It handles like a car, parks so easily (and we live in the city),it has great pickup on the open road and feels like a solid luxury vehicle. The back seats lay completely flat and I have the space and utility of a good truck. My daughter is a new driver and I believe this 2004 Escape is the safest SUV on the road today.

  • Excellent Compact SUV - 2004 Ford Escape

Have owned my AWD Escape XLT V6 for 15 trouble free months now and I continue to be impressed by the overall quality and versatility of this little SUV. Car-like ride, powerful engine, excellent handling and braking capability. I live on a small farm and occasionally have to drive it over some rough terrain. It is a tough little SUV, and Ford was smart enough to put all-terrain tires on the Escapes. This is a definite advantage over the Honda CR-V , Toyota RAV-4 and several other "pretenders." Would highly recommend the Escape to anyone.

  • I like it. - 2004 Ford Escape

I downsized from a Durango to the Escape, and I was worried about the change. But I was pleasantly surprised with the Escape. It is comfortable, zippy enough and it pulled my snowmobiles just fine. Some of the things Im not to fond of are: the turn ratio, the small gas tank, a lot of the controls are on the column levers and sometimes gets confusing (may just need time to adjust to them). Overall, I rate this truck pretty highly.

  • Never buy American AGAIN - 2004 Ford Escape

I purchased my car less than 1 month ago. My Driver side door has already fallen off! The pins (bolts) are put in the hinge with the head facing down. Well That is a stupid error on Fords part for sure. However, the interior is roomy enought to feel like you are in a larger SUV as compared to the RAV and the Honda. It has a powerful enough engine. And the stereo system is not bad for being a stock feature. Customer Service has so far taken care of the problem and even gave me a free rent car (if they didnt I would be more than angry)
