Overview & Reviews
The 2004 Ford Escape remains largely unchanged although the price has been lowered on the plush Limited model and certain appearance packages are now available on lower trim levels which, in effect, reduce the final price. Also, Chrome Yellow is no longer a color choice. To eliminate confusion, trim levels and option packages have been consolidated.
- Powerful V6, large cargo capacity, comfortable interior, carlike handling.
- Weak standard four-cylinder engine, bland interior design, small gas tank size limits range.

Big SUV feel in Smaller Size - 2004 Ford Escape
By SueCar - May 22 - 2:00 amThe 2004 Escape XLT has a solid feel on the road. After driving several other SUVs such as the CRV, I noticed it sits higher off the ground than other smaller SUVs. It has the optional setting so you can set it on 4WD all the time or set it on the sensor. Its 6 cyclinder engine gives it better pick up and power. The Escape also feels roomier inside than other smaller SUVs. My Escape is running about 23.5 mpg, which is a couple of mpg less than the CRV, but mine is a 6 cyl vs. the CRVs 4 cly. My final price also was a few thousand less than what the Honda dealers wanted for the CRV.

Starfire Escape - 2004 Ford Escape
By mmnats - May 16 - 2:00 amExceptionally easy to drive. A lot of get up and go. Easy to maneuver and park. 1st SUV I bought but not the last. I keep a car for many years and I know this will outlast my previous car. SUVs are easier to get into and out of that standard cars for anyone with a handicap. I just feel wonderful when driving my starfire red Escape. I really feel like Im escaping from the doldrums of everyday living.

First Time SUV Owner - 2004 Ford Escape
By Jen in Atlanta - April 3 - 2:00 amI love the Escape Limited that I purchased. Has all the bells and whistles, LOVE the heated seats. Its fun and easy to drive -- a great little SUV. The V6 has a lot of get up and go when you need it and the feel of sitting up high is pretty cool compared to my last car. Overall Im loving my first experience owning an SUV. The gas mileage could be better, but then in reality its about what I expected.

Love my Escape! - 2004 Ford Escape
By southernbelle - January 20 - 10:00 amIve had my Escape for about a week now. I love it! This is my first SUV and I doubt that I will ever go back to a "car" again! I enjoy the feeling of being up higher. The Escape is a very smooth ride. When I bought it, I felt that it was a good SUV and I hoped that my feeling was right. It was!!

Had problems - 2004 Ford Escape
By Rob - January 4 - 12:37 pmI leased my 2004 Escape LTD in Feb. 2004. Two years later, at 20,000 miles, the car had a "complete failure of the transmission" (the dealerships words). The whole transmission had to be replaced. I have also had problems with the sun roof not opening correctly. Also, sometimes when I start the car the treble on the radio comes on but not the bass, and I have to restart the car to get the radio to work correctly. Plus, in cold weather the driver window squeaks horribly when you roll it up/down. I owned a 2001 Escape for three years and loved it so much I went back for the 2004 LTD. The problems Ive had with it, especially with the transmission, have soured me to Fords.
