This Year's Model Updates:

The 2004 Ford Escape remains largely unchanged although the price has been lowered on the plush Limited model and certain appearance packages are now available on lower trim levels which, in effect, reduce the final price. Also, Chrome Yellow is no longer a color choice. To eliminate confusion, trim levels and option packages have been consolidated.

Pros:
  • Powerful V6, large cargo capacity, comfortable interior, carlike handling.
Cons:
  • Weak standard four-cylinder engine, bland interior design, small gas tank size limits range.

I loved this truck. Unfortunately I was going down the interstate and the balljoint gave out, flipping us three times. We are lucky to be alive. the truck only had 41,000 miles. Also had to replace the wiring harness at 38,000 miles.

I love this vehicle! What more can I say. It goes great in the snow and has done everything I have asked it to flawlessly. I can only find two flaws. Excessive road noise and the doors do not have an "outer" weather seal. The door jams and sills are allways a mess and need hand cleaned.

  • MPGs - 2004 Ford Escape

Ive only had this truck for 6 days nows - I drove 339 miles on my 1st tank of gas and it was spread out evenly between hwy & cty miles. The reason I got the 5-speed manual 4cyl was for the "estimated" 28MPG. I can tell you I drive my vehicles very easy and I never "jack-rabbit" start. I ALWAYS get more then the estimated top end gas mileage but, this first tank of gas yielded me only 24.8 MPG. I was VERY UPSET! I hope that this is because the truck is new and will have to break in... but I cant imagine that is the case. Other than that. The truck rides nicely and with all the rebates I got out of there with a brand new truck for $15,300. Not too bad.

I bought this as a dealers demo with 4,000 miles and the truck performed pretty good mechanically. Needed tires at 32,000 miles. The ride was very noisy with a lot of wind noise and road noise. After 30,000 miles the ride was very rough and the truck was all over the road on bumpy roads. I recently bought my wife a Kia Sportage and that vehicle runs rings around the excape as far as comfort, ride and standard features although the Excape does have a more powerful engine. There are better choices in this price range.

Ride is smooth, not too much body lean for a fairly hefty vehicle. Pick up is responsive. Interior is pleasant, comfortable, with the only major problem being the gearshift in the way of the audio controls (will be fixed on the 05 model.). Gas mileage is not terrible for a SUV this heavy with a v- 6. Exterior is well made, no cheap plastics or easily scratched paint. The four-wheel drive system is made for daily commuting/travelling..not made for four wheel off-road adventures. Interior road noise is noticeable, but not overwhelming. Overall, I am very satisfied with this vehicle, great performance for a relatively cheap pricetag.

I have been driving the 2003 for several months, both on the road and in town. I love the way it handles and it is great for shopping. My husband who did not want me to buy it, loves it and drives it all the time. It is great on the highway also, good mileage, comfortable and easy to handle.

  • Change of Habits - 2004 Ford Escape

I think there are still bugs that need to be worked out. My Escape has about 76,000 miles and had to have a new master brake cylinder. I have never had as many problems with a Ford as I have had with this Escape. The resale value also drops very rapidly. Yes, sorry to say my next car will be something besides a Ford. Like my grown children say buy a foreign made car they last. Old habits are hard to break but my Escape has broke this one.

I love my Ford Escape. She rides like a charm. Comfortable too. My only downfall about this vehicle is the gas mileage on her. 250 miles to a tank.

Have tried other suvs, but this one better. Its smart looking, handles great. The only complaint would be the console. I would love to be able to lift it into a backrest for the front seat. Feels solid when driving, and takes curves very well. Husband has trouble getting into and out of vehicles due to his hip replacement, but this one is very easy for him. We will continue to buy this product as long as it continues to perform as it is now.

I love my Escape..and there isnt much Id change about it! If I could though, I guess Id get heated seats, if offered, and more towing ability. But I truely love driving it..being a woman, its the perfect size, I dont feel like a burly man driving it!
