This Year's Model Updates:

The S-10 gets a sheet metal makeover and a new interior with dual airbags that incorporate second-generation technology for reduced force deployments. The basic four-cylinder engine benefits from Vortec technology this year, while 4WD models now have four-wheel disc brakes and a more refined transfer case on trucks with an automatic transmission. New radios, automatic headlight control and a standard theft-deterrent system sum up the changes.

Pros:
  • Fuel efficient base engine. Sporty styling. Powerful optional V6. Handy third door option.
Cons:
  • Shabby build quality. Low seating positions. Rattly third door option.

  • Never buying American again....... - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

I have a 1998 Chevy S-10, 4WD extended cab, 55000mi....waste of my hard earned money. I DO NOT ABUSE THIS TRUCK. My driveshaft snapped out and dropped out my truck....please explain how this can happen? From day one nothin but problems. Interior: visor broke off in my hand, passenger seat adjustment broke off in my hand and intermittent power window problems. Exterior: wash and wax regularly and everytime I do I find chipped paint and rust spots, cracked side view mirror casing, 3rd door hand broke off in hand. Mechanical: front cv joint boot just came off, spare tire holder broke, brakes are less than par DONT BUY THIS TRUCK!

Great value - more options, better styling and durability than anything else at the price. Fairly sporty to drive with 4 cyl., 2wd, 5 spd., and it only weighs 2800 lbs. Ive parked it outside in the NE for 5 years and put on 70,000 miles, and the only problem is that the grille plastic is fading. Not a single mechanical problem, paint looks good with a yearly carnuba wax, and no rattles. The bed is galvanized. Im skeptical of the American cars quality, and Ive been happily surprised.

  • what a piece of junk - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

I bought this truck in 2001. It had 80,000 miles on it when i bought it. I have hated it ever since. I have replaced: starter, fuel pump, and many gaskets. It had left me stranded multiple times and the locks ice up every time the temp drops below 20. The tranny grinds when put into 1st gear. This truck has been nothing but a headache.... and the clutch as a squeek that i cant find.

the salesperson told me that a complete tune up was done, tires had recently been put on, and that the truck was cleaned inside and out except the glove compartment which at the time the handle was broken. WRONG!!!!! i paid $3ooo from the dealer, in the three months i had to put new tires (recently done-right) $250, new battery $75, new starter $110, new u- joints $150, and basic tune upandthat the work i did, the dealer had to put a new timing chain, which cost me $650 all in all for a new (to me) truck that was supposed to cost $3000, it has cost me another $1300.tough lesson to learn

  • S-10, best car ever! - 1998 Chevrolet S-10
    By -

I have only driven chevys and american cars and of all the cars I have owned or driven I have to say that my 98 s- 10 is the best I have ever owned. Powerful, comfortable, looks like a million bucks and above all it is very dependable. I have 98000 miles on it over four years of ownership and it has been in the shop only three times for fairly minor repairs. I have been in all types of climates and roads you can imagine, deserts, mud, dirt roads and highways. Getting groceries or camping this truck does it all. It rules!

  • lot of power in a small package - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

I bought myself this truck for christmas last year after the trans. went out in my lumina (115,000 miles). I love this thing. the truck is perfect. except for one thing. i wish it had a tad more power from the factory. maybe a high flow exhaust or underdrive pulleys. both of which would also increase gas mileage.

This truck was the best thing that I have ever bought. Had the V6 with some performance parts with the 5 speed manual. This was a very fast truck.

  • Excellent Truck & "race car" - 1998 Chevrolet S-10
    By -

This truck has pick-up and rides and handles like a race car. It has been extremely reliable which is a rare find now a days. Other than the regular upkeep, it has been an excellent vehicle. Excellent gas mileage too. After 4 years of driving I wouldnt trade it for any other truck.

  • Smart Buy! - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

I have had this truck for 3 years now and have loved every minute of it. I bought the truck from a friend with 13,xxx miles on it and I am yet to experience any problems. Everything inside and out of the truck is placed well and I cant complain about any of the mechanical fetures either. Overall, I give it a 10.
