Overview & Reviews
Performance and durability enhancements have been made to the engine, exhaust system, manual transmission and antilock braking system, but they don't result in more horsepower. Trucks equipped with the ZR2 package get a new axle ratio designed to improve acceleration. Extended cabs are available in Base trim this year, and LS models have revised exterior moldings.
- Sleek styling, fuel-efficient base engine, stout optional V6, stump-jumping ZR2 off-road package, sporty Xtreme model handling.
- Spotty build quality, inferior-grade interior trim, low seating positions, poor crash-test scores.

Will Not Die - 2000 Chevrolet S-10
By cole_dizzle - July 11 - 12:57 pmI have about 230,000 miles on mine. The transmission is starting to go on it, but it was a great little truck. I bought it for $5500 in 2006, with about 130,000 miles, and have been pretty hard on it since then, with no major repairs. Very pleased.

Long Hauler - 2000 Chevrolet S-10
By Dan S - February 12 - 9:35 amThis truck is a true brawler. I have a 161,000 miles on it and it feels just as strong as when I bought it. I have the 4cyl and 5spd. I have put a yard of wet top soil in the back (not recommended) and she keeps on getting it. Very good truck for the money. I have had to replace- starter, alternator, tires, spark plugs, battery and oil but this truck is strong. Handles for the seatback have snapped they are cheap but motor, drivetrain is very good.

Good Truck - 2000 Chevrolet S-10
By black s10 - September 14 - 11:50 amI bought my s10 with 94k. after i bought it the alternator went out. i replaced front pads, rotors, and wheel bearings at 100k. new tires and front ball joints followed at 130k. ive replaced the fuel pump twice. the truck now has 160k with no signs of stopping. its a dependable truck. parts can be pricey but with proper care, the truck will last as long as you want it to. gas mileage is great, its under powered with the 4cyl, but id prefer the gas mileage over the acceleration. if planning on lowering it like i did, be prepared for suspension components to fail.

I must have got a good one - 2000 Chevrolet S-10
By Colorado ZR2 - August 30 - 5:33 pmI lucked out and got a good one! The GM shop must have give out bonus checks the morning before this little truck was made. 193,500 miles with no major mechanical problems. Truck does have several small problems but nothing that takes the fun out of driving this "Z". The 4x4 system is great, 5 speed with the ZR2 limited slip, truck will go anywhere in the snow. Interior held up well, seats were covered and look new. No cracks in the dash, all the knobs and buttons still work. The stock rims did break between the lug nuts. I had to sell this truck today because I need more room for a new baby. Wish I could keep it but I bought a new Tundra Crewmax

Sixth S10 - 2000 Chevrolet S-10
By MH - August 25 - 8:03 pmIve had six S10s - 2 poor, 2 OK, 2 excellent. My current 2000 model has been one of the excellent ones. After 10 years and 113K miles I still love it. 4cyl/5spd averages 25mpg regularly. AC still cold! Travels off road with an occasional light trailer tow. Replaced: a headlight lamp, one set of brakes, shocks and battery. Currently having all 100K mile maintenance done, including tie rods replaced.($1900) I plan on keeping this truck a while longer. I like a plain, cheap truck that works and the S10 fits the bill. Mine has no PW/PL, no 3rd door to rattle, room enough for a 64" driver. The only extra is the sound system. Id buy another new one if I could. Just dont like the Colorado.

Not to bad - 2000 Chevrolet S-10
By Doug - August 6 - 3:13 pmFor as cheap as these trucks are they arent that bad. Third door handle broke but i found a metal replacement online for 35 bucks. Never had any major problems besides tierods and wheel bearings. $ cylinder is a bit sluggish but havent had any problems. Definitely a cheap build though. Bought it for $4500 when it was 7 years old. Has been rusting out though due to Michigan weather, cab corner, third door, and rear wheel wheels. Both seat levers did break off but found replacements at autozon for like 30 each.

A bullet proof Chevy - 2000 Chevrolet S-10
By Johnny B - July 31 - 11:27 pmCompletely reliable, at least for me, without fail. Not once. Ive had her for about 2 years and 31,000 miles, and the only times Ive ver been stranded were because of tire problems, and once because of a dead battery. (when I first purchased the truck) its not fast or flashy, but it gets very good fuel economy, especially if you drive conservatively. When I do I believe I get about 26-27 mpg. Sound system is nothing amazing, but leaves nothing to be wanted either. Abs has always worked properly for me and saved me from a few near-wrecks. This truck is fun on gravel, and good at light off-roading which I have done my fair share of. Simple, effective engineering and a good looking truck.

great but not awesome - 2000 Chevrolet S-10
By Brian - June 25 - 8:48 pmBought truck new and let me tell you, If you ever owned a Fiero this truck is a Godsend. Yes I have had some problems...driver side seat lever snapped (pot metal design) I have had the ball joints replaced and the fuel relay. also the heater core clogged but I blew it out with some water. the only annoying thing is the abs , which activates in dry weather...pulled the fuse..no abs but who needs abs it is useless anyhow...I think I have had one time this truck didnt start in 10 years..cause of the fuel relay..to me that is a dependable truck..the rest I can deal with.

Typical GM Quality Product - 2000 Chevrolet S-10
By Tom Bates - June 10 - 12:00 pmThings held together for the first 36,000 thousand miles. Door hinge pins fell out right at the time the warranty ran out. Then slowly things have been breaking and falling apart. A seat adjustment lever here and there a blower motor, here a short, there a short, gas gauge stuck on 3/4 of a tank. The A/C has one speed and that is on. At least it is working, so does the cigarette lighter.

Third Major Repair in Two Years - 2000 Chevrolet S-10
By Will - December 13 - 4:37 pmWhere should I start? Overall, the 2000 S-10 is a strong workhorse and looks good. Heres my dilemma since purchasing the truck with 100,000 miles on it. Last year, the transmission went out at 160k miles, next the third door handle broke ($140 repair and still feels like its gonna break again), the alternator died this summer, radiator broke, and the starter died as well. Not knowing what the previous owner did as far as maintenence, but for a 6 year old truck it has left me stranded again...blown engine as a result of the heater core fizzin out!! Oh, did I mention the $2600 transmission rebuild last year also? I love GM cars, but Im having second thoughts!
