This Year's Model Updates:

The S-10 gets a sheet metal makeover and a new interior with dual airbags that incorporate second-generation technology for reduced force deployments. The basic four-cylinder engine benefits from Vortec technology this year, while 4WD models now have four-wheel disc brakes and a more refined transfer case on trucks with an automatic transmission. New radios, automatic headlight control and a standard theft-deterrent system sum up the changes.

Pros:
  • Fuel efficient base engine. Sporty styling. Powerful optional V6. Handy third door option.
Cons:
  • Shabby build quality. Low seating positions. Rattly third door option.

  • Great truck - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

I purchased my S-10 after I drove my Neon through a very large mudpuddle and blew the engine, I figured Id get something that can handle more abuse. and boy was I right. mine has been through everything imaginable, I have even pulled a 05 Silverado out of a ditch and continued to drag him while he applied his brakes. I have 214,000 miles on this truck (original trans and engine) Long story short, if you are in the market for a small truck get an S- 10

  • good truck - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

I drive alot of highways to and from work. I take care of the oil changes every 3000 miles and the mechanic says it is in good shape to reach 200,000 miles. The only nagging problem is the security light comes on once in a while. They want $3-400 dollars to replace the security system. I prevents the truck from starting once in a while and I have to wait 20 minutes for the system to reengage to start the truck. Over all it has been a good truck fo me!

  • 1998 ZR2 - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

This vehicle is very fun to drive and the look of it is very appealing. I have owned this vehicle for one year and have put over $2500 in repairs. The guy before me must have not taken care of it. I didnt go more than two months without something going wrong. I was at the repair shop frequently. Although it caused me some headaches, I would defintely own another ZR2 and they are worth the money, as long as you take care of it.

  • Nice Truck - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

Nice truck, no horsepower... still very nice interior and stylish exterior. No complaints... except no horsepower...

  • Great value for a used truck - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

I bought this S-10 with the 2.2L/5 Speed - yet otherwise its loaded even to having the premium CD player audio. The 4 Cyl is okay power-wise once you realize it comes alive up in the rev band when you need to accelerate. The A/C all but kills the poor engine however - but it does blow ice cubes. There is enough room for my 61" self - the bonus of the lower seating. For me, of course the seat is jammed fully back without the luxury of reclining - so I dont use those break-prone parts... of course my lumbar support is long gone. The seats are too hard. The wiper control issue is a major safety problem! Positives are great economy and solid body at 100K+

  • Those wires drove me crazy! - 1998 Chevrolet S-10
    By -

The high-energy ignition module kills a set of wires every 25K miles.Until you recognize that, it will make you insecure. As soon as you feel that first stutter, probably on a wet day, change them immediately. When its got good wires, it runs like a champ. 103K so far, still getting 28MPG on a commute, Ive had as high as 35 MPG on a trip w/ 5 speed, 4 cyl.

  • Great Little Truck - 1998 Chevrolet S-10
    By -

Purchased my S10 LS extended cab new and added a bed liner and topper. Had trouble with the seat back latch breaking off but Chevy replaced those at no cost. Also developed a minor oil leak after 30,000 miles but hasnt gotten any worse with nearly 50,000 miles on the odometer. Great fuel economy with the 4 cylinder engine but not much pickup around town. Highway driving is a different story-the engine will keep up with the cruise control demands with little variation at almost any speed you want. Fun to drive with the 5-speed manuel. Very reliable and a real work horse.

  • Nice Little Truck - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

Bought my truck 2 years ago, I have the 4cyl 5 speed. Has been a great truck for me, most of all because of the great fuel economy. Has some minor things that dont cause any problems, they are just annoying. Like many other S-10 owners I know the SES light is on. Have taken it in twice and they cant seem to find out what it is. It shifts nice except downshifting into third, that can be a little tricky. 80,000 miles and still going strong.

  • 1998 ZR2 - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

Truck does very well in snow when using 4x4. Does well off road except that it does not like to make sharp turns. However, that is expected with extended cab trucks. V6 engine has plenty of power. I had to replace the powersteering pump at 35,000 miles and the ball joints at 50,000. Good design overall, just wish that it was built better. My seat adjustors are broke, the handle to my 3rd door is broke. Fender flares are ate up and I only have 54,000 miles on the truck.

  • Rock solid - 1998 Chevrolet S-10

I have owned this truck for almost 3 years. Ive owned fords and dodges, and neither one has come close to being as reliable as my chevy. Where Im from, I see alot more S-10s than fords and dodges combined.
