I purchased this Malibu with 51000 miles on her and she has been a great car! I have replaced brakes several times ,come to find out this was a factory issue in these cars.Overall this has been the most reliable car I have ever owned! She now has 151000 miles and is still running strong!I would buy another one if I could find one with the same 2.4 4cyl engine! I get 30 mpg on highway and 25 in city, although she is not the sportiest car she is good in the snow and has plenty of room for my family! I am 61 and my son is 60 and he can sit behind me with ample leg room!

I have found it to be very reliabile and responsive. I am always surprised at the fast response with the six.

  • NEVER BUY AMERICAN AGAIN! - 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

I used to be a fan of american motor cars until I bought this one. With a NEW ENGINE, A/C, Starter, Battery, Sprayer nozzel, seat belt latch, Trunk Carpet, lights werent focused, and some other items in a period of one year I can firmly say that this car is undeniably a P.O.S., Toyota/Honda here I come. P.S. Now the car is starting to randomly stall, a common problem, one that GM refuses to recognize and fix for free, too bad they didnt learn from Saturn, the company they destroyed.

  • Good basic car. - 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

We bought it new and put 136K on it before giving it to a family member. It was still sound with no creaks, bumps, or finish issues. We averaged ~27 mpg (V-6) over its lifetime ~30 on the interstate. A lot of it was winding 2-lane state highways, which it handled very well for its size. I did have to get the head gaskets done (indicated by falling coolant levels) but that was covered by the (extended) warranty. I was very irritated the first time I had to do the brakes and found the rotors warped at 60K miles - too little metal to hold shape or be worth turning. I never considered rotors to be disposable. At 64" and 260#, I was pretty comfortable.

  • Dont buy one New or Used - 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

I brought my 99 Malibu LS in September 2007 after my beloved Saturn was totaled. So far in the shop more then 17 times in a row! I should have bought that Saturn L200 in the lot! So far 2 head gaskets, radio knobs fell off, stalls out when ever it wants, under powered V6! Gas guzzler, paint uninspiring! Never like Chevy or GM but the only GM I will buy again is Saturn! I also replaced my starter 2 times and the keyless entry broke as well. Seat comfort gets uncomforable after driving! Now Im saving for a 2009 car but definitely will not be a Malibu!

  • Malibu: Reliable Car Packed w/ Features - 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

This vehicle is very comfortable on long trips. You can pay several thousand more for less features and what some think is better quality (Camry or Accord), but I dont think they are worth it. The Malibu has proven to be reliable as far as ratings are concerned and for transportation for me over the 7 months that I have owned it. Another thing to consider when buying a car in this class is the price to repair it. The parts needed to repair a Camry or Accord can be very expensive compared to the Malibu, when something does go wrong.

There are things I love about my car, like the get up and go on the highway others I hate. I have the Opal blue, and with the coolant issue, FL sunshine and bug issues, the paint on my hood is toast (talked to others with GM color whove had same issue) Like others Ive had the coolant leak, but no brake problems, Im on the 3rd A/C switch since I bought with 8000 miles on it. (program car)had the tensioner problem and gasket issue and the ABS light issue. I have a leak somewhere in the windshield fluid reservoir no one can find (& labor to pull it is way too much now.) CDs get condensation with the A/C on hi (Im in FL) and now will not work at all. Was great as 1st car, but ready for new

I bought my 99 Malibu for $400. I couldnt pass it up even though I read on here before I got it, and so far mine has had head gasket problems. It runs good and I think the v6 has enough power. The car was wrecked but put back together somewhat when I got it. Still needs paint job and windshield. The CD player plays when it wants too. Same with the sunroof, its power and it doesnt wanna close all the time. Handles pretty good. Rust around the gas cap.

  • Quit your whinning...this is a good car! - 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

I am surprised to see all of the negative comments about this car. The car handles great, has terrific acceleration, and is very comfortable on long trips. We have only had one service issue with the car and the dealership repaired it because we bought an extended warranty. Just a little advise to buyers of American cars...BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY...you are going to have problems. The only service I have had to pay for is new front disk break rotors and pads at 60,000 miles (which is excellent). Overall this has been a great car for my family. Malibus dont hold their value, but they will give you good service if you take good care of them.
