This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche is the newest addition to the Chevy truck lineup. Incorporating a unique convertible cab system, the Avalanche can transform itself from a five-passenger sport-utility with a 5-foot-3-inch bed into a standard cab pickup with a full 8-foot-1-inch utility bed. A 5300 Vortec V8 is standard along with a heavy-duty towing package.

Pros:
  • Versatile and innovative cab configuration, strong V8 engine, high tow rating.
Cons:
  • Funky styling, cheap interior pieces, limited drivetrain choices.

  • HEADLIGHT FAILURE AT !!!!!!!!!!!! 50 MPH !!!!!!!!! - 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

2002 Advalance headlight problem that no one has ever heard of! Driving down dark road switch lights from low beam to high and lights go completely off. What a surprise so I switched back to low beam and thank goodness they worked. The odd thing is the bright light indicator stays on either in low or high beam position. NO ONE HAS BEEN ABLE TO HELP. PLEASE HELP ME IF ANYONE HAS SEEN THIS PROBLEM.

Overall I have had very little problems. The only area I have had problems is the steering and front suspension. I have replaced wheel bearings (1) & steering shaft (3). Also, I have had to align the vehicle several times (4). The ride is good for me and I like the dry cargo area a lot.

  • It leaks when it rains!! - 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

The water seems to leak in from the panels covering the bed and behind the mid-gate. At some point the water in the bed overflows into the cab under the mid-gate soaking the carpet in the rear of the truck. This happened on the sixth day I had the truck. I took it back to the dealership and they told me they would try to fix it under the warranty but it was pretty much my problem. Ive called everybody I could think of to complain but with no results. Ive taken the truck into two different service centers 3 times for a total of 19 days and it still leaks.

  • Wears poorly with time. - 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

AV is a good idea for those looking for room, ride and the benefits of a truck. Unfortunately, like most GM products, this truck doesnt age well. After two years and 36k, problems are starting to pop up on a regular basis. The truck is babied and serviced regularly, but exhaust baffles just went, steering coupler seized up, ABS sensor died etc. The good deals on new Avalanches mean huge depreciation for used units. Buyer beware, buy one to run to the grouond, not for just 3 or 4 years or epect to take a huge hit. Good for a few years or low mileage users, but I fear how long this truck will hold up.

  • try again chevrolet!!! - 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

All though the 2002 Avalanche is an innovative design it is poorly designed from stem to stern. Specifically, head lamps that hold water/condensation,engine air vents that collect all sorts of debris, plastic side panels that will probably cause corrosion problems in thefuture, combo leather and cloth seats that are absolutely uncmfortable after 30to 45min of driving, a fold down bed extension system that leaks and a covered bed design that the chevy dealer says is water resistant, ie it leaks, yup you guessed it by luggage and golf clubs have gotten wet more than once. To sum it up Dont buy the avalanche, built like a rock and worth about as much!

  • there crazy, we aint stupid. - 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche
    By -

She might look good be it doesnt cut it. Its not a rock its a pebble. GM should take this toy and work it on the farm and on gravel roads before they talk. Its a sad day when you have to go and get a tractor to pull it. back end to light, poor electronics, poor design over all, they sould go back to the board on this one, water leaks, poor steering, poor warranty work, three weeks the repair shop was enough to leave it there period. GM ought to be paying you to advertize. thats the only change.
