This Year's Model Updates:

The 2.8 sedan gets a valve job resulting in 18 more horsepower and additional torque. Side-impact airbags are standard, as is traction control. Opt for the automatic and you'll get the same Tiptronic technology that allows Biff to manually shift Buffy's 911 Cabriolet. A new station wagon called Avant debuts, while the A4 1.8T gets new wheels, a sport package and an ambient temperature gauge. New colors and stereo improvements round out the changes for 1998.

Pros:
  • Gutsy new V6 engine. Comfortable interior. Great handling. Stellar design. Optional all-wheel drive. Optional Tiptronic automanual transmission.
Cons:
  • Small back seat. Useless cupholders.

  • 2.8l Quattro - 1998 Audi A4

I love my a4. I bought it used over a year ago, and havent had too spend TOO much money fixing it up. Of course, some things have gone wrong, but thanks to a large internet owners community, you can easily fix many problems yourself if you are willing to learn some DIY. I have never once regretted buying it.

  • My 5th German car and best yet! - 1998 Audi A4

I bought this car with 113k on the clock and it is in great condition. It has 125k on it now and I intend to drive it till 400k if itll let me. The v6 engine is awesome but know you are not getting any modification potential other than exhaust. Performance chips are worthless for this engine. It corners great for a bigger car and the torque this engine provides makes it great for around town driving. This is my first lux AWD sedan and with the 5spd it is easily my favorite car owned so far. Very sleek exterior and interior. The build quality is top notch and the 2.8 has been extremely reliable as long as you keep up with maintenance. I couldnt have bought a better car.

  • Great Buy - 1998 Audi A4

Bought it with 129,000 miles on it. After buying it, spent few grand on regular maintenance (timing belt, fluid flushes, water pump) none of those thing were needed, but I was looking to keep it for long time. Currently has 140,000 miles on it. It has been very reliable for me ever since I bought it. Only thing I had to fix after I bought it, was wheel bearing and valve cover gasket set. I have many after market parts on it such as (performance chip, borla exhaust, itg air filter, etc) the gas mileage has been decent. 18-20 city and 26-31+ highway. Which I think its great for an all wheel drive car. I will drive it till wheels fall off.

  • Was a very nice car. - 1998 Audi A4

Amazing in the Wisconsin Winters. I call it a tank for the reason that it has been hit 4 times, and the only visible damage to the car was a slight tear in the right rear fender the day it was knocked out of a parking stall and into the stall next to it. However, the repairs make this car not so much fun. I have done regular maintenance on it since I bought the car, and yet I always drive home with it wondering what is going to go wrong with it next. The high dollar fixes become a drain, especially in this economy. Have to get a new PCV valve, and the part costs forty dollars. Repairs total 350-400.

  • Lots of troubles - 1998 Audi A4

Ive bought this car when it had somewhat high milage of 82K miles about year and a half ago. Ive put about 40,000 miles on it by now and while I really like the way it looks and drives (especially on the snow) it is a nightmare in terms of reliability. Everything which could get broken did. Ive invested about $5000 in it already and can easilu fit another $2K just to make it run normally. Oil leaks, water pump, power steering, tire rod ends, wheel bearings, and honestly this is just the beginning of the list...

  • not bad, not great - 1998 Audi A4

I also dreamed about an A4 for years before getting my 98 A4Q Tiptronic. The quattro is awesome in the snow. But the entire transmission was replaced at 22k mi (under warranty fortunately) and dealer could not explain why. Plus few other misc repairs. Now its out of warranty, I think Ill get something more reliable. This is a great looking, fun car to drive with a lively engine. But its not as reliable as my old Audi 90.

  • Audi A4 - A huge dissapointment - 1998 Audi A4

All I can really say is that this is the WORST car Ive ever owned. I bought the vehicle with 38,000 miles and by 48,000 it needed new rear brake pads and rotors. But that was just the beginning. At 60,000 miles, the rear struts and bearing had gone. At 65,000 the front CV joints has deteriorated to the point of failure. Now, at 68,000 miles the car is in the shop due to excessive engine noise and the fact the engine check light has gone on. Im afraid of what the shop is going to tell me. In fairness to the car, it performs fantastic and looks great. But the reliability problems that have plauged Audi in the past are well evident in the newer models as well.

  • Will Look Swanky in 2020 - 1998 Audi A4

Unlike the Passat wagon, Avant styling is sublime, its performance striking. Its in the details. VW settled on aluminum roof racks, A4 goes steel. VW goes for a painfully boring interior, Audi goes tight & classic. Avant is designed with just enough room for hauling, but it handles like a cool, little sportscar. Drawbacks: no backseat space. A4 performance at low speeds is annoyingly sluggish. It zips confidently on the highway, but the neighborhood runs is a crawl from 1st to 2nd gear. This for a V6? The red dash is cool, but tough on the eyes.

  • disapointing A4 - 1998 Audi A4
    By -

I love my car, but this machine has cost me plenty of headaches and thousands of dollars to keep it running. So far Ive replaced several major parts in the engine that should have lasted the lifetime of the vehicle. I expected Audi to produce more reliable machines.. this one is not.

  • Terrific reliable car, but costly - 1998 Audi A4
    By -

100,000 miles later, it has never let me down, but be prepared to pay. Suspension bits especially, and there are an infinite number of bits in the quattro suspension. The interior is unmatched and extremely durable, and Audi paint is excellent. There are few cars of the era that do so many things well, including 27mpg.
