Overview & Reviews
The 2.8 sedan gets a valve job resulting in 18 more horsepower and additional torque. Side-impact airbags are standard, as is traction control. Opt for the automatic and you'll get the same Tiptronic technology that allows Biff to manually shift Buffy's 911 Cabriolet. A new station wagon called Avant debuts, while the A4 1.8T gets new wheels, a sport package and an ambient temperature gauge. New colors and stereo improvements round out the changes for 1998.
- Gutsy new V6 engine. Comfortable interior. Great handling. Stellar design. Optional all-wheel drive. Optional Tiptronic automanual transmission.
- Small back seat. Useless cupholders.

Costly to drive - 1998 Audi A4
By spnj - July 24 - 9:34 amBought it new 1998. Six V cylinder engine with a manual stick. Fun to drive and a lot of pep, but repairs way too much and suspension design and transmission not worthy of German engineering (mechanical engineer myself). 12 years and average maintenance/repair cost $1,000/year. First the lower suspension arms replaced, twice each side (Audi recall eventually), then new leaky radiator, wheel bearings on three wheels, timing belt and water pump at 90,000 miles, 142,000 miles new clutch ($1,300), control arm upper front, and exhaust pipe clamps (3 times) plus regular maintenance. I think this is my last Audi and I will turn it in

My first and last Audi - 1998 Audi A4
By Once A Mistake - July 4 - 10:00 amI bought my Audi new in 1998 after comparing it to the BMW. To me, the Audi "felt" like a more sturdy car. Needless to say, my Audi has been anything but sturdy. A design flaw keeps the front-end of my car flapping in the wind most of the time. My salesman has never seen or heard of this problem. The service people see it all the time. I pay to have it fixed - at least twice a year. Friends laugh when I get out of my car and pound my bumper back on with my hand. A new warning indicator lights up every other month. Audis response? $$$Ca-ching... I paid my car off 6 months ago. Now my monthly payment goes to repairs.

Stay Away! - 1998 Audi A4
By LauraZV - July 28 - 2:00 amBought this car in 98, thought I was buying the ultimate car. All the seals leaked, problems with exhaust. Tie rods went, radiator developed a leak, as well as water pump. Wheel bearings went in two wheels, all with less than 50 K miles in 5 years! Noise in rear of car that two car dealers could not find, then told that rear suspension needed replacing. Traded in for a Honda, very happy now, but experience with Audi, who did not compensate me for my expenses and agony, was miserable. Audi is a four letter word to me now. Dont buy an Audi.

Never Again - 1998 Audi A4
By badchoice - June 30 - 2:00 amI will never by another Audi. This vehicle has had several major mechanical issues, and the manufacturer has refused to cover them since it is out of warranty. A vehicle in this class with relatively low mileage should not have these issues (and our Infiniti doesnt). It is the most unreliable vehicle Ive ever purchased. I know several other owners who had similar experiences.

Please help me sell my lemon - 1998 Audi A4
By Please buy my lemon - April 12 - 2:00 amHere I sit car-less again. My Audi A4 is in the shop. Last month it was the clutch. My car has only 60,000 miles! And yes, this is the FIRST time I have ever had to replace a clutch and its my fourth manual trans car. My computer has to be reset continuously. I have replaced my CD changer twice. And why is it they make you trade in the old one but STILL charge over $200 for the new one??? Also, why was Brake Check able to locate the oil leak in one visit when the dealer wasnt able to locate it in MULTIPLE visits? I wanted to wait a year before buying a new car, but I have recently determined that I cant afford to spend another dime on this lemon!

junk - 1998 Audi A4
By doctorrocket9 - January 11 - 8:46 amWe bought a pretty pearl white 1.8T with sport package. Two weeks after the warranty expired, the dealer said we needed new brakes, tires, and rear ball bearings, total bill $3000. The car needed endless work during the warranty, but at least we didnt have to pay for it. This was our second and final Audi, both with extensive problems lasting and very high repair costs. Now we drive Hondas.

WORST CAR IVE EVER OWNED - 1998 Audi A4
By mnbeckertx - March 10 - 2:00 amWorst mistake Ive ever made was buying this car. Spent more time in the shop than I did driving it. The dealer gave me Toyota Corolla loaner cars - if at all (expected more after a great experience with BMW). I tried to get rid of this car for years, but was unable - nobody would give me any money for it. HORRIBLE RESALE VALUE
