The 2.8 sedan gets a valve job resulting in 18 more horsepower and additional torque. Side-impact airbags are standard, as is traction control. Opt for the automatic and you'll get the same Tiptronic technology that allows Biff to manually shift Buffy's 911 Cabriolet. A new station wagon called Avant debuts, while the A4 1.8T gets new wheels, a sport package and an ambient temperature gauge. New colors and stereo improvements round out the changes for 1998.

NOT RELIABLE - 1998 Audi A4

Guaranteed to fail (all happened to me): -ABS Module (min $2000 to replace, for cheaper alternative checkout autoecu.com) -oil leaks (at least $1500 to replace $8 part, do timing belt at the same, same labor involved) -tie rods -Control arms (theres a recall on one of them, but ALL of them will eventually fail) -rear deck speakers (easy fix, just glue the poly-cone, it comes loose causing vibration) -side mirror reflective material deterioriating (ive seen it on other A4s in parking lots) -side door base-molding rots/falls of

By Jonathan Kocay - November 30 - 2:00 amwould not recommend due to very high maintanenace costs - 1st gear of Manual transmission is going / replaced catalytic converter /was leaking oil fixed and a year later is leaking again.

Great Car! - 1998 Audi A4
By John S. - November 14 - 2:25 pmWhen I bought this car, I lived in the Minneapolis area and had the strong need for All Wheel drive without the need for a pick-up truck, AWD van or SUV. The A4 has been fun and basically reliable. I had one front headlight lamp and both front upper control arms replaced under warranty. Out of warranty Ive had to have the ambient temperature and coolant sensors and brake master cylinder replaced.

I got rid of my 1997 850 Volvo and picked up a certified pre-owned 1998 with 25k miles on it. I could not be happier right now. I love my car!! Hopefully I will be saying this in 3 years from now.

I LOVE MY A4 - 1998 Audi A4
By Rachel - September 6 - 2:00 amI would have to say that these A4s have a lot of power. Mine is very quick and compfortable.The tiptronic is very fun. The brakes arent quite as good as BMW but they are alright. OVERALL i would give my A4 a rating of 9. I will keep this car for many wounderful years.

Good Car, Bad Service - 1998 Audi A4
By Neveragain - August 7 - 10:00 amGood car and good company until my servicing dealership performed unauthorized work on my vehicle. Audi customer service claimed there was nothing they could do and I would have to take it up with the dealership. On top of that, they didnt even do the service correctly. They aligned my car and claimed it was perfectly straight with the steering wheel cocked to the left. They requested I take it to another shop and if they think the steering wheel isnt straight, then they will fix it. It took them three visit and three weeks without my car and my wheel is still off center. Believe it or not, the car was in better condition before I dropped it off at the dealership.

Some Good Things, Some Bad Things - 1998 Audi A4
By Robert - August 6 - 2:26 pmIt is expensive to fix, unless you are a DIY or can find a good mechanic who knows these cars. Do not bring back to the dealer, esp. if its used. Some issues with control arm and tie rods, but I put lots of miles on it. The digital readouts sometimes do not work well, esp. if there is significant climate change (I live in New England where it can change by 30 degrees in a day.) A/C is crisp and good, Engine is sound, body is excellent and resists salt erosion and wear, mechanically there are some issues esp over pothole roads. It is fast and nimble car, no back seat leg room.

Audi Lover Cheated - 1998 Audi A4
By Audi Lover ????? - July 22 - 7:54 pmI have had nothing but expense after expense which is making it difficult to justify buying another Audi despite my love for the cars. In nearly 3 years I have replaced the water pump, rear bearings, mass air sensor, power steering rack (which came from Audi faulty and was warranty replaced by local mechanic) turn signal headlight stalk, tie rod ends, sway bar links, all control arms (upper A and F R lowers), the timing belt, valve cover gaskets, mirror directional button is bad, and the car eats tires like the chocolate doughnuts I used to eat in my overweight youth. I am questioning, in anguish, the merits of fine German enigineering.

By Suzi - June 25 - 3:28 pmI purchased my Audi A4 2.8 Quattro new after studying reports on AWD and 4 wheel drive vehicles on the Internet and in libraries, I narrowed the field to 5 potential cars. I then test drove all of them, most more than once, on surface streets, highway and the Colorado mountain highways to check cornering and ability to keep up with the pack (you know what I mean if youve ever driven I-70). The Audi A4 stood out far above all the others! 8 years later, I am still a huge fan! All scheduled maintenance has been performed, but no major repairs have been necessary. The car still handles and performs like a dream, and looks as good and stylish as any new auto. I love driving this car!

The ultimate love hate relationship - 1998 Audi A4
By Shawndh - June 24 - 12:33 pmI love to drive this car. The interior is the best in class. I added a GIAC chip which gave a little more throttle response and that was all the power I needed. The 2.8 is very smooth, the handling is great and its a georgous car. On the other hand there have been some reliablity issues. Ive replaced: eng fan, control arm, tie rods, defective CD chg, vac line (recall), cam seals, T-stat, and now the ABS controller is dying. Other probs were from fine tuning modifications that I added. I do most of my own maint and shop for aftermarket parts online and junkyards for deals on parts. So it hasnt been that bad financially. But I wouldnt recommend to a non-DIY type.
