This Year's Model Updates:

The 2.8 sedan gets a valve job resulting in 18 more horsepower and additional torque. Side-impact airbags are standard, as is traction control. Opt for the automatic and you'll get the same Tiptronic technology that allows Biff to manually shift Buffy's 911 Cabriolet. A new station wagon called Avant debuts, while the A4 1.8T gets new wheels, a sport package and an ambient temperature gauge. New colors and stereo improvements round out the changes for 1998.

Pros:
  • Gutsy new V6 engine. Comfortable interior. Great handling. Stellar design. Optional all-wheel drive. Optional Tiptronic automanual transmission.
Cons:
  • Small back seat. Useless cupholders.

  • Reliability seems like hit and miss... - 1998 Audi A4

Did alot of research for this car. I bought it with 40K on the odo. So far, I have 75K and still going strong. Soon as I bought the car, I chipped it and threw in K&N filter. Boosted the output considerably (Need it b/c I have tiptronic, Porsche version). Definately a must if you own this car. About to put in exhaust (surface rusted) and NOS sprayer for intercooler. Handles very well but not too harsh. I do lot of hi-way traveling. Pretty quite for car of this size and sportiness. I love the AWD on this. Drove to ski resort and surprise to find that I can drive 35+mph on them slippery stuff. The ski boot was another neat feature. Didnt know I had it! Gotta like the heated seats^)

Bought used 1.5yrs ago with lowish mileage. Been a good car with only one failure that warranty covered. Love the ergonomics, build quality, high quality materials throughout and advanced engine and drivetain design (AWD). Car is a great do everything vehicle, with reasonable performance (0-60 in 7.1 seconds)

  • $$$$ to own Beware of maintenance costs - 1998 Audi A4

Bought the dealers demo and got the 3- year warrenty. At 45 k, the problems started - front suspension - $ 766 tie rod end and water pump - $ 1245 60 k - rear half shaft bearings - $1400 transmission valve body $ 3200 and now the ABS unit is shot and its back to the shop for another $3000. That is $9611! Parts and service are very expensive! I am selling and cutting my losses. Ill be buying a Honda or Toyota or an American car from now on. What a piece of junk!

Theres nothing I can say that someone already hasnt covered. Quattro is unbelievable in rain, gravel, snow, and grass (hehe). The acceleration is good, but not stellar. The gas mileage hurts a bit too much for the Quattro though, seeing as how I average 21 mpg on 93 octane. For a compact car Id expect a little better. All in all, if you can afford the gas and want to stick to the road (or whatever surface youre driving on), get the A4Q. The suspension is definitely a problem. Youll just have to get it fixed. It feels good in the city, even better on the freeway, super firm yet comfy enough for long trips. I love my car.

Bought this car new. Loved the looks and how it performed in the snow. However, I spent way too much time at the dealer. Replaced 3 airbags, starter, wheel bearings, tie rods and had repeated "check engine" problems. All the exterior molding fell off and interior was poor quality. Brake handle broke,as well as other interior parts. Spent $31000 for the car and it was not close to being worth it. Did not hold its value and was not impressed with Audi customer service. Bought a new Subaru Legacy and love it.

I do alot of driving and absolutely love my A4 2.8Q. Bought with 50K I now have 140,000+ and expect to get 300K from this car. The Quattro is inspired. The Bose stereo is great for someone infront of it quite a bit. For this car the build quality has been fine with just the suggested maintenance needed to be done. Owning an Audi means you have to join the Quattro club and attend as many events as you can! I am an Audi guy for life!

  • Own two A4s - 1998 Audi A4

I have two of these cars - a 98 Turbo FWD and a 99 Turbo Quattro. Most of the people on this site who have rated these cars are idiots - comparing apples to oranges. Yes, if you have Quattro it is goin to be sluggish in first and second. AWD robs power, you fools. Dont compare it to a FWD Japanese car. Yes, your car is going to need new tires and timing belt at 60,000 miles. Stuff wears out, suck it up. No, it is not more expensive to fix than a Japanese car - I have found it to be cheaper.

  • Well worth the money - and repairs. - 1998 Audi A4

I have had my share of problems with the car. Broken turbo, tie rod ends, control arms, wheel bearings, and the ignition switch. But with all the broken things, I just replace them with aftermarker parts, which make my car so much more enjoyable to drive. I have upgraded the turbo from a k03 to a k04, put in heavy duty control arms and tie rod ends, put a full race coilover kit (KW), made a custom 3" Turbo-back exhaust with hi flow cat, and did many other little things, that would cost more to replace with OEM parts than what I did, yet I yeild much happier results. This is a drivers car. Quattro is AMAZING in snow/incliment weather.

  • Audi VS Detroit - 1998 Audi A4

Past owner of Corvettes and just traded in a 1994 Z-28 that I loved with 140,000 miles on it. This Audi handles corners like it is on rails. The power is less than my Z-28 but very usable with the 5 speed automatic slap shift option. Loves the highway. Great car !
