This Year's Model Updates:

The 2.8 sedan gets a valve job resulting in 18 more horsepower and additional torque. Side-impact airbags are standard, as is traction control. Opt for the automatic and you'll get the same Tiptronic technology that allows Biff to manually shift Buffy's 911 Cabriolet. A new station wagon called Avant debuts, while the A4 1.8T gets new wheels, a sport package and an ambient temperature gauge. New colors and stereo improvements round out the changes for 1998.

Pros:
  • Gutsy new V6 engine. Comfortable interior. Great handling. Stellar design. Optional all-wheel drive. Optional Tiptronic automanual transmission.
Cons:
  • Small back seat. Useless cupholders.

  • Fun to drive but terrible quality - 1998 Audi A4

Bought this brand new, and have had a succession of minor and major problems. While the driving experience is excellent, the build quality of the car is terrible--worse than a 1984 Ford Escort I used to own. Its bad enough that I never plan on buying another Audi. Id advise you not to buy one to begin with.

I just bought my 98 Turbo and just about everything is fine except for the smell of buring oil. I checked the oil and I guess the last owner didnt like to change it because it was pitch black. So Ive changed it, it wasnt very easy, and hopefully that gets rid of the oil smell. Other than that, the car looks great and is a blast to drive. If the oil smell goes away, I will love this car.

Control arm bushings failed, the windshield wipers failed, the ignition wiring failed. I go through a $100 headlight a year. Ive had to replace two fuel injectors. After having a recall service performed on the front tie-rods, the car never drove straight again. It requires $91 octane gasoline or better (US). This car was maintained by Audi, by the book, for the first 50,000 miles, and meticulously by myself and a certified Audi technician thereafter, yet it continues to fall apart. I truly wish I never bought this car and I wouldnt own another Audi if someone paid me to do so. Its the definition of an unreliable lemon.

This is my fourth Audi. It is not as dependable as the other three, with small maintenence problems.

Back to the dealer for service... lots of it. Mine was purchased new and has 48,000 miles on it. Ive replaced the computer, catalytic converter, cam tensioner seals, 5 instrument panels, 3 batteries, coolant reservoir, coolant temperature sensor, fuel guage sending unit, stereo, 2 speakers, and the alternator. Over $4,000 in billable repairs since the 3 year warranty ran out not including maintenance items.

The a4 is a great all around car and excellant in the snow but the 1.8T engine is lacking a little though you can easily get that bumped up to 200 or so by a chip. This car has very few flaws but i have had alot of trouble changing out the sound system. Try to find a bose equppied model to save you time. This is a car i would highly recommend

One of the best handling cars and most fun cars to drive. Good power (but not great), great handling (better after lowering), and adequate comfort. Good mileage, and with all wheel drive is a car that you can take just about anywhere on any road under any conditions. Exceptional brakes, although peddle pressure required is high -- suggest changing to Brembo disks and calipers. Reliability, outside of front suspension parts, is outstanding. After more than 150,000 miles, it still feels and runs like new.

  • Great car with an extended warranty - 1998 Audi A4

Bought car new almost 5 years ago. Love driving it but theres no excuse for having to replace the battery 3X, the instrument panel 2X, the alternator, turn signal stalk, tiptronic magnetic switch, computer, coolant temp sensor, fuel tank sending unit, coolent reservoir, cam tensioner seals, hazard flasher switch, radio, 2 speakers, and 2 CV boots in 48000 miles. I keep looking behind me to see if the extended warranty company has sent Tony Soprano after me!
