The 2.8 sedan gets a valve job resulting in 18 more horsepower and additional torque. Side-impact airbags are standard, as is traction control. Opt for the automatic and you'll get the same Tiptronic technology that allows Biff to manually shift Buffy's 911 Cabriolet. A new station wagon called Avant debuts, while the A4 1.8T gets new wheels, a sport package and an ambient temperature gauge. New colors and stereo improvements round out the changes for 1998.
- Gutsy new V6 engine. Comfortable interior. Great handling. Stellar design. Optional all-wheel drive. Optional Tiptronic automanual transmission.
- Small back seat. Useless cupholders.

Overengineered, but fun - 1998 Audi A4
By GreenMTNDoc - January 1 - 2:00 amIve put all 102,000 mi on my Audi since 7/1997. The first 4-5 years were great. The car is wonderful to drive, and I still love to drive it. However, its cost me about $2k-3k/yr over the last 2.5yrs to keep it running. Ive maintained it as meticulously as possible. My ind mech (got tired of the dealership) stocks the fr susp components because so many fail (about one set a week he says). In addtn, Ive had to replace brakes, radiator, starter motor, rear wheel bearings (twice!), and the timing belt (I guess this last one is expected).

Dont buy it - 1998 Audi A4

Have had to replace two headlights, head gasket, and timing belt at 74,000 miles. $4000 so far. Rub rails falling off the car, (defective brackets), transmission shifts rough. Audis QA doesnt measure up to selling price. I will never buy Audi again

This ones good! - 1998 Audi A4
By happy for 8 years - December 16 - 2:00 amBought new 69,000 miles in 5 years. Very few problems, radio replaced, new dash cover, all under warranty. Average 24 mpg in mixed use driving. Ride quality has deteriorated in last 10k miles, rear dampers need replacing. Great highway car relaxed, quiet, very comfortable. V6 power adequate. Dealer experience very favorable (Commonwealth VW/Audi). This is my second A4, and they both have been excellent. None of the repair nightmares so sommon on this list. My cars are very well maintained, and driven sensibly. Bose stereo, drivers seat, and overall interior ambience have kept me enjoying these cars for this long (8 years and 120,000 miles between the two).

My car is junk - 1998 Audi A4
By financeman1440 - December 3 - 2:00 amI bought the car with 39k last October, since then I have replaced all front control arms, brakes all around, now it is the shop apparently needs a new rear differential and possible wheel bearings. The front of the car keeps falling off, when I park too close to a curb. Cup holders dont work, my 850 volvo gets better gas mileage. Love the looks, hate the car. Local dealer sucks.

Probably wont buy another one... - 1998 Audi A4
By cgray88 - October 15 - 2:00 amFor about 2 years, it was by far the BEST used car I ever owned... Then I hit 60,000 miles... Since then the car was in the shop every other week. My brakes gave out, tie rods were shot, 4 tires had to be replaced, ignition coil replaced, headlights replaced twice, speaker blew, cd player stopped working, fuel pump went out, trunk stopped opening, alternator kicked it, and the AC compressor died. Finally, I decided to give up and sell it, and literally the day before, the timing belt broke. It has now been at the dealer for 2 months, as of yesterday. All told, approx. $8800 for repairs since 60,000 miles (and I never did get the AC fixed). Bah.

My A4Q experience - 1998 Audi A4

Very difficult to tell if you will receive good or poor experience and it varies between dealerships as well. The car itself has been fine in the snow, and the gas mileage isnt bad for a 4wd car. Great looks and comfortable interior. Wish it had more power though...

Youve heard it before - 1998 Audi A4

Since then, it pretty much lines up with the things said in other reviews. Be prepared to pay to keep it moving! It is going back into the shop today (just got it back 2 weeks ago) and will probably be sold after that.

Fun to drive, expensive to repair - 1998 Audi A4
By Permechanic - August 18 - 2:00 amI loved the road handling and the way 80 mph felt like 35 mph. -Quattro will take off some low end grunt from a stand still. The styling is very slick and the interior very comfortable. However, I found the car to require frequent, expensive service.

By richard303 - August 11 - 2:00 amBought it in 03. The thing is expensive to repair 1200 for a timing belt??? Also the control arm on mine is going or gone along w/ the tie rod ends and Ive heard that it is a problem on the 98s but audi has not officially made it a recall on all 98s...thats another 2k down the drain. The car is very good in the performance area but could use a hp boost seeing how a chipped 1.8T would already out do it in hp.

My 1998 A4Q - 1998 Audi A4
By marstein - August 11 - 2:00 amI own this car for 5 years now. It has the sports package, Bose Audio and 6 CD changer. INterior is leather. The leather held up very well, the only scratches are from my daughter throwing a tantrum in the rear seat with her sandals, using the buckles. The only thing that bothers me is a light rattle when cold over my shoulder. Poblems fixed by a repair: some control arm broke down after 5 years and the transmission was leaking. Otherwise Ive been lucky. The car rides comfortably, the engine (30V) is very silky smooth but powerful. It does use some oil (1/2 l every month or so). The quattro AWD was useful for skiing vacation. I never slipped anywhere.
