This Year's Model Updates:

The top-of-the-line W8 model has been discontinued. The GLX loses its standard telematics system. New 16-inch "Rockstar" alloy wheels are standard on the GLS (in place of the former 15s), and new 17-inch "Bistar" alloys are optional on the GLS and GLX.

Pros:
  • Better handling dynamics than most sedans in its class, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive, unique diesel engine option.
Cons:
  • Upper-level models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals, less rear-seat room and storage than competitors, V6 is down on power.

  • I dont like it. - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

We bought our Passat new in 2005. Within 3 months plastic pieces began to break. We have stopped having them repaired because the new parts also break. We have had the front tires blow out twice because the car wont hold an alignment. The trunk lid has become so stiff that my wife is not able to open the trunk. Now the car is in the shop with excessive sludge buildup after we used VW for most if not all oil change service. This car has been worse quality than any other car I have ever owned.

  • So far so good - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

My dad purchased this car in Feb. of 2009 on the same day that I got my 2003 Ranger. Ive never been much for German cars, but Im slowly starting to like them. I read all of the reviews that mention the sludge problem. They dont change their oil frequent enough. It should be changed every 3 months or 3000 miles and you will be good to go.

  • Two New Passats - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

The Passat TDI has plenty of pep for passing. Averaging 42 mpg to work and back (160 miles). Build quality and stability is as goog as a Mercedes. We liked it so much that we bought a second one. Radio on both cars in AM mode is raspy (seems like it is not on the exact frequency). My secretarys car which is a 2003 Passat has the same raspiness as our cars.

  • 2004 Passat 1.8T GLS - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

For less than $23000 excellent built quality, great looking, superb interior materials. perfectly ballanced ride comfortable but with little body role, outstanding safety features (active restrain seat belts, side and head curtain airbags, esp), excellent performance considering the 1.8T economy engine giving highway milage of 32+ and suburban mileage of 26+. This is the best car I have owned so far. In my opinion the best value among wagons and family cars seating 5 currently available

  • Chrome Oxidizing All Over Body - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Volkswagen is using junk chrome on its exterior. The chrome all over my car began to oxidize at about 5,000 miles. Dealer said that they had never heard of this problem, although VW had developed a special creme to buff out this problem theyve never heard about. Buffed once, reoxidized, regional manager is telling me I have to take off work to have it buffed out again. Why? Just replace the faulty chrome. Shame on you, Volkswagen! I love the car otherwise, but I am souring on the company after what Ive been through. Initially, they were not willing to do anything. Too bad, so sad. Disappointing gas milage. You can do better, VW...

  • Great Car - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I traded in a 2007 Toyota Camry CE for a 2005 Passat TDI. I was scared at first it of being a diesel. When I first saw it (I found it on the net and gave a deposit over phone and drove to VA from NJ to get it) I liked it. The car felt safe and heavy, its safety features are good, it drives great, it handles great, and has a nice interior like heated mirrors. I feel safe when Im it. The best thing is I only used nine gallons of fuel and got 400 miles with it. My friend and I could not believe it. It gets from 44 mpg up to 50 with power and the ability to climber hills with no loss of power. I am happy that I got this car and will keep it for years to come. It can go 10,000 miles between oil changes. It is particular about the oil that it needs, but its worth it.

  • Take a look at the Passat wagon - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

After considering and test driving the Volvo V50, I ended up with the Passat GLX with 4 motion. Not only was the ride more fun, with faster pick up, the interior has more cargo space, and to me, has more quality materials. The Passat feels solid on the road, and has clean, classic style.

  • Best VW Ive Owned! - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Ive had my 05 Passat TDI for about four months now, and I love it. I was a bit concerned that it wouldnt be as peppy as my 03 Jetta Turbo, but it has quite a bit of zip. Its passing power could be a little better though. You just have to plan ahead a little more for passing maneuvers. The back seat is huge for a car this size. The gas mileage is awesome, although it will drop in the cold weather. Also, its a dog on cold mornings, until it gets warmed up. Overall, I cant complain. For the money, its a very nice ride. Now I just need to get used to the funny looks I get from the truckers at the diesel pumps, and the station attendants asking me, "Um, you know that pump is diesel?"

  • 05 VW Passat - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

I am completely satisfied with this car. We upgraded from an 03 VW Jetta so we could have more room for our growing family. It feels sturdy, drives smooth and weve had no problems arise.

  • Excited about driving again - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I bought this car last June 04, not too sure what to think about having a grocery getter. I had Honda Civic which was too small (6’4 frame, plus new baby), so I had nothing to lose. The room inside is much bigger than I thought; it can hold five adults comfortably with no lag on the turbo/engine. The back end is ideal for when my wife goes shopping, now she can buy more. I wish I ordered it with the bigger wheels and engine. Overall its a car that I can trust in going up to Michigan(coming from VA) in the winter or load it up for the beach.
