This Year's Model Updates:

The top-of-the-line W8 model has been discontinued. The GLX loses its standard telematics system. New 16-inch "Rockstar" alloy wheels are standard on the GLS (in place of the former 15s), and new 17-inch "Bistar" alloys are optional on the GLS and GLX.

Pros:
  • Better handling dynamics than most sedans in its class, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive, unique diesel engine option.
Cons:
  • Upper-level models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals, less rear-seat room and storage than competitors, V6 is down on power.

  • Solid Car so Far. - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

So far this diesel has been an unbelievable purchase. I wanted to give it a month or so before I reported on anything. I bought the car used with 122 000 KMS on it. I had the timing belt replaced as well as the transmission oil changed and a new fuel filter so there would be know surprizes. I gotta tell anybody who is reading these reviews.....everything I have read about this Passat TDI is bang on correct. This is the smoothest car I have ever driven, very similar to the Audi A4, excellent on fuel, just PURE enjoyable. I am averaging 45 miles to the gallon or 6.4L/100KMS and better on long trips. I have now owned 5 diesels this is the best so far.

  • There Really Is A Difference - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

If you are all about fuel economy, performance, and safety I am not sure what other choice in this price class you have. The stereo has surprising capability, remember this is a base model. The air conditioning works great and when you need a little get up and go this car never disappoints. My fuel economy for highway ranges in the mid-twenties. Thats only because I have a tendency to punch it a little. I have the leatherette seating and with kids I think it is a must have. This car offers a better range of view then other Veedub models. I like being a little different not pulling up to the party in a Toyota. Oh, and so far my car has had no problems!

  • No sacrifices - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

No sacrificing quality, comfort or safety in the pursuit of lowering fuel costs. Even the base GL is fairly nicely appointed including above average sound system. Handling is fun, acceleration is astonishing given the 40 mpg highway and 35 mpg combined. This cars body is solid. Judging from forums, I have high expectations for longevity of the engine.

  • My dream car - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

The cars runs well, but the milage in the V6 decreases greatly in city traffic. Also the transmission module failed just prior to a long trip. The car was under warranty, and a dealer took care of the car. The car requires high test gas, which has become quite costly

  • My husband got his first speeding ticket - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Wow, this vehicle is great! What a difference from my soccer mom minivan. It is very responsiive, very comfortable, and very fast. This is quite a change UP.

  • Great little car and fun to drive - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

I am very happy with my Passat wagon. It is nimble and a blast to drive thanks to great handling. The turbo motor lacks low end torque, but once you put your foot into it, the car has enough power to get you in and out of trouble. Its highway mileage is also a real plus, but the 91 octane requirement means you need premium fuel. It has good cargo room for its class and the high roof helps out here. The fit and finish are also very good. The interior is austere but very well done, but the glovebox is the only real storage space.

  • Great car - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

The car is beautiful inside and out. Its extremely comfortable and feels more expensive than it is. The leatherette upholstery will fool anyone into thinking that it is real leather. This car is made for long highway trips. The ride is very plush and quiet, and the seats fit my 61" frame very well. My last car was a 4 cyl Accord, and the fuel economy is not as good as I expected. I got 29-30 MPG on an all highway trip versus 36-38 MPG in the Accord. The trip computer also lies about the fuel economy. It shows 1-1 1/2 MPG higher than the true MPG. Too much engine noise enters the passenger compartment & the engine is more coarse in feel and sound than an Accord or Camry 4 cyl.

  • Money Pit - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Bought this car used in 2009, drive only highway miles and this car has been nothing but problems. Last year alone it cost me $6500 in repair bills. VW dealers are no help, even with used car warranty it covers nothing.

  • Best handling wagon I have ever owned - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Now have 2300 miles on this fine automobile. I would not trade it for anything made by Toyota or Honda. The handling is superb. Already had to use the fine braking. The girl in the Toyota PU looked happy the Passat stopped so quickly when she pulled out in front of us. Very quiet well built vehicle. Highly recommend the VW TDIs.

  • I love this car - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

I had a VW Jetta before I bought my Passat, I loved both but the passat has a lot more room and lots of power. It is also a very stylish car.
