This Year's Model Updates:

The top-of-the-line W8 model has been discontinued. The GLX loses its standard telematics system. New 16-inch "Rockstar" alloy wheels are standard on the GLS (in place of the former 15s), and new 17-inch "Bistar" alloys are optional on the GLS and GLX.

Pros:
  • Better handling dynamics than most sedans in its class, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive, unique diesel engine option.
Cons:
  • Upper-level models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals, less rear-seat room and storage than competitors, V6 is down on power.

  • My new VW... - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

This great looking car is pretty fast considering its relatively small engine (2.0L 134hp.) The 247 ft/lbs of lowend torque is what makes it a really fun drive - I find myself saying "farfegnugen" a lot! I love watching the mpg average with the TDI engine. I had problems with the dealer just handing me a box with the books, wrong keys and no new car walk through. The car spent its 1st week in the shop because a speaker wire was bad, causing a high pitched whine. They had to route a replacement wire from the amp to the door speaker. I REALLY WISH 4MOTION would have been available with this model!!!!!!! Im also concerned about taking it back to California & passing the smog check.

  • Junk - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Do not buy the Volkswagen Passat. Ive owned mine for ten months now and its been in and out of the dealership for a total of about two months. My problems started three months after I bought this car. Im plagued with electrical problems and powertrain problems. The dealership and Volkswagen say there is nothing wrong with my car, yet I have to take it back at least once a month because it doesnt run. When I ask about them taking this lemon off my hands both the dealer and VW tell me to take a hike. I am fed up and wouldnt wish this auto on my worst enemy. Whatever you do, do not buy a VW. Save your money and sanity and buy something else!

  • This Car Could Be With Us For 15 Years! - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

I needed a new car, and it came down to the Passat TDI and a Camry SE. I am happy with my choice. The United Gray with gray leather interior looks great. We had some trouble with the original radio, but that was replaced. I am considering adding the rear fog light. This car will end up with my daughter when she goes to college, she is 10 now, and it is an incredibly solid car. It has room for 5 in comfort, and gets 33+ MPG’s cruising at 80-85 MPH, with enough torque to pass anything in your way! it is a little heavy on the wind noise at these speeds, but I can still hear the sound on my kids’ video games!

  • Diesel is the way to go - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

A sports sedan that gets on average 35 mpg, who could want more! The only negative is diesel fuel is very expensive in the winter months. Friends marvel at the room and trunk size when the car seems almost compact on the outside. Lots of features, very good value. Hopeful I will not have to visit the dealer much, VW can have reliability issues.

  • Terrible Gas Mileage - Passat V6 GLX - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I purchased a new 2005 Passat GLX (V6 Auto) in Sept 05. The comfort of this car is awesome. I really like the car but the gas mileage stinks! I get anywhere from 13-15 mpg in the city and 17-19 mpg on the highway. The dealership states the car is OK....all checks out OK...sure, its not them buying premium gasoline and its a far cry from the "EPA avg. of 19 and 26" which is used in their sales speech! With this gas consumption, I should have bought a Tourag...then I could not complain. Most likely I will be getting rid of the car in the near future simply because of the gas mileage.

Man, I was going to buy the GTI from Volkswagen. But when I saw the 04 Volkswagn Passat in candy white and a 1.8 liter turbo engine I fell in love with the beatuy. GREAT SEDAN/SPORTSCAR Volkswagen..

  • Whatta Wagon!!! - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Picked our new Passat up in Oregon and drove to Southern California. Went through rain, Snow and highwinds. The handling is superb. Averaged 37 MPG overall. Drove mostly back highways to enjoy the handling. It was all I could do to get my wife to let me drive. Her car is a Lexus and she likes the handling of the Passat better.

  • Well Mannered but boring - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

This is a well mannered wonderfully smooth vehicle with a gorgeous interior, especially all lit for night driving. Underpowered in summer driving with the A/C on. Smoothest car that I owned, but needs more HP and handling. Winter all wheel drive performance was excellent once I ditched the stock tires.

  • Best Car that has ever been built - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

This car drives like a Mercedes. I holds the road like glue and it is very smooth. The four cylinder turbo acts like its a 6 with remarkable pick up on the highway and plenty of room for packing things. It has very comfortable heated seats with several adjustments for lumbar support. Both front windows roll up and down with a touch of a button once and all the windows go up or down using the outside key. The workmanship is solid.

  • Happy driver - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

This is the second TDI that ive owned and both have been excellent road cars. I enjoy the engine torque that gives outstanding highway performance. Yes, diesels can have performance and the enconomy is a added benifit.
