This Year's Model Updates:

The big news for 2004 is the addition of a 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder engine to the lineup late in the model year. The 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is a delayed option on 1.8T-equipped GLS models. Also note that the 2.8-liter V6 is no longer available on GLS models. The premium Monsoon stereo and Homelink are now standard on all GLS models, while wood trim has been added to the optional Leather Package. The ESP stability control system is now standard on the GLX. Rounding out the changes are restyled 15- and 16-inch wheels and new side mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Expensive upper-level models, less rear-seat room than some competitors, some confusing interior controls.

I owned this car for one year, and would never drive anything else. The car is built very well, and drives very well. The 1.8T engine is great. It is smooth and very quiet with little turbo lag. I get 27 mpg around town with a manual transmision. The car makes very little road noise, I have hade people fall asleep driving 90+ mph not knowing or feeling the speed whatsoever. No car on the market can compare to the Passats fit and finish and quality componets in that price range. The car also gives you more room than a 3 series BMW, C class Benz, S 40 Volvo, and Audi A4.

  • So Bad We are Selling It After 15,000 Miles - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

We have had this car for a bit over two years and it has been in the shop five times. The windows have stopped working twice, ocassionally the sunroof will refuse to close, there are pieces falling off in the engine compartment, the dash squeeks (the dealer refuses to even acknowlege it is an issue), the console cover would not close completely and the radio has been replaced twice. We have a two year old who when playing with the vents was able to break the vent louvers with one finger. You would think a car designed for a family would be robust enough to survive the two year old one finger inspection. All this in 15,000 miles. This is not what I would call a well designed car.

Very handsome sedan.Takes the bumps a little hard(would gladly give up some handling for that).Nice dashboard with all those red and blue lights.Looks like the cockpit of a jet.Just passed 8000 miles with no problems. Also, very nice power.I wish I could let this car out somewhere.Did go to 95 once and it felt solid.Love all those GLX goodies.

  • A blend of comfort, performance, economy - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

A friend raved about his Jetta TDI, and I drove it and was impressed. At first I thought the Passat might be more car than I needed, but I love the way it performs and it exudes engineering savvy. Lots of details have been carefully thought through. The selectronic transmission allows it to be shifted like a standard or driven as conventional automatic. Way cool! The moon roof is a nice feature and the trunk space is phenomenal. Ive owned the car for two months and am still discovering nice features. So far I can recommend only two changes: lighted switches on the visor mounted progammable remote control buttons so you can see them at night .

  • Surprisingly Good Car - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Ive had the car for less than 2 months and 2100 miles but it is one of the best cars Ive ever had. Peppy engine, great handling, lots of room inside, clean outside style, lots of safety features. Ive been very surprised about how much I like driving this car...I never expected to. Much more fun than my wifes 2003 Accord EX, although less features for the money. The Accord has more "toys" but the Passat has more "heart"...Ill take heart every time!

I bought my 2004 1.8T in Oct ober of 2005. Just had my first oil change today. My dealership in town is very helpful and friendly. The car is a delight to drive. My teenange sons LOVE to drive it too. It hugs the road extremely well. The car handled fine in the winter snow of Wisconsin. Im very happy with this car. I test drove the Sonata / Altima / Camry. The Passat was the one that I loved driving! Im glad that I bought it. My car has had no problems so far.
