This Year's Model Updates:

The big news for 2004 is the addition of a 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder engine to the lineup late in the model year. The 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is a delayed option on 1.8T-equipped GLS models. Also note that the 2.8-liter V6 is no longer available on GLS models. The premium Monsoon stereo and Homelink are now standard on all GLS models, while wood trim has been added to the optional Leather Package. The ESP stability control system is now standard on the GLX. Rounding out the changes are restyled 15- and 16-inch wheels and new side mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Expensive upper-level models, less rear-seat room than some competitors, some confusing interior controls.

  • Not Impressed - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Already has spent a week in the shop for different problems ranging from AC not cooling (still not fixed) to CD getting stuck. Dash starting to rattle and its been only less than two months and less than 1K miles. Long wait getting appointments from dealerships (I can imagine why). Fuel consumption terrible.

This is my 6th Volkwagen, 4th Passat. Wow, what a car. Even with only the GLS model, this car has to be the nicest car Ive owned, ever. Power, good fuel economy, comfortable, all around a GREAT vehicle. Wouldnt look at a Toyota or Honda after owning the VW

Yes, after looking and test drive some japanes car such as nissan honda, mitsubishi and mazda. The winner was german car Passat. The classic lines and desing, the interiors and ergonomics. The small turbo 1.8 engine is agile and very responsive for a four cylinder.

The Turbo is very nice and provides more than adequate power. However when the temperature was over approx 86 degrees F., the motor was very short on immediate power. Perhaps it need something to cool the hot air at these times.

I recently purchased my Volkswagen Passat from my mother prior to leaving for college. I had wanted something a little sportier and suited to customization, such as a GTI, or other sport coupe. Given a deal I could not pass up, I decided on the Passat (reluctantly at first.) I found, however, after looking the automobile over, that it had sufficient power (until I decided to upgrade that is) a luxury interior (in leather trim), and enough rooms for my friends and myself. After installing my custom sound system, this car is a definite keeper and crowd pleaser.

  • Passat Wagon- fun, functional, awesome - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

We bought the Passat after trying out over 8 different models/makes. We selected it because it offered all the features we had to have in a car; safety, economy, comfort, fun, and looks great. The kids love it and are excited for their friends to see it- no wonder, its a beautiful car. The Passat is smater than the humans that drive/ride in it- seats molding to your own body, remembering you when you return- even if someone else has taken your place before. Hopefully this car will last as long as the 17 year old Saab we traded in.

This car is way more car than I expected! I went to get a Jetta and ended up in a Passat and am I glad. Its truely a luxury sedan at no where near the price of a BMW or Mercedes for the same features! I love driving it and you dont see a million of them on the road like some of the other sedan models! Highly, Highly recommend.

  • awesome! - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Ive only had this car about 2 months, so far with 63k mi, my wife and i love it. 25-35mpg is a little less than i wanted, but still pretty good. fun to drive, takes corners like a champ.. 1.8T has been "upgraded" with a new performance chip, giving me roughly 200hp (up from 170), blowing those other sports cars away.

  • Love my car - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Most enjoyable car I have ever purchased. Previouly owned back to back Accords which were nice but not really fun. I look forward to just going for a drive due largely to performance and luxurious feel. I have the manual transmission and dont really notice the turbo lag. My gas milage is great. Dont understand the people who say fuel economy is poor. I get 22-25 in town and 31-34 freeway. I am and 6 feet tall and wife is 55" and both find comfortable driving positions. Had to take car in for ingnition coil recall and power loss to stereo. Both warranty items fixed promtly.

  • Great longevity - 2004 Volkswagen Passat

I have the 2004 model. After 11 years and a great ( indy VW) mechanic and regular maint. and oil changes, Ive had minimal costly repairs. Maybe, Im in the minority but Im holding on to it, with just 115,000. My last VW went past 200,000.
