Overview & Reviews
For the old 1.8T GTI, the VR6 style has been dropped and more features, including 17-inch wheels and stability control, are now standard. Starting in the late spring of 2006, the 1.8T Volkswagen GTI will be slowly phased out in favor of a fully redesigned model. As before, this performance hatchback will be based on the upcoming next-generation Golf. Highlights for the new GTI include increased performance, new styling and more interior room.
- Hatchback utility, upscale features and interior design, strong engine and automated manual gearbox of redesigned GTI.
- Higher price than those of its competitors, old GTI lacks oomph.

Awesome Sports Car - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By Lovin it - May 11 - 5:13 amThis car is great, comfortable, reliable, and FAST! I have done high speeds 6th gear and still had room to go fasterand still felt absolutely solid, and responsive. You can also very frequently bypass gears. Thr leather seats are comfortable and I have not stuck to them which was one reason I was hesatent about buying leather. Overall the GTI is an awesome car, who else puts 10 airbags in there cars for front and REAR passengers? Standard? Not many! VW has thought of everything with this car. Thank you VW!

Over 40? The GTIs still for you. - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By flubs - March 7 - 1:40 amIf you were old enough to own and drive an original GTI in 83 and think youre too old now and should drop more money on an Audi or the like, think again. This car is all grown up like you, but still retains its frugal blend of practicality, performance and sublimer. Sure the ad campaigns are geared for a younger demographic, but dont let that deter you from getting what you really want for such little money. After a terrible day at the office, at least you get to drive home!

Volkswagen GTI is Hot for 2006 - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By scooter j - January 2 - 6:26 pmI test drove the 2005 Volkswagen GTI and the purchased the 2006 model. There is no comparison between the two. The new GTI is twice the car, its a lot smoother, has no no turbo lag, and runs at lower rpm with its 6-speed manual transmission. It is just a great car!

Awesome car, BUT........ - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By John Y - December 22 - 1:46 amThis happens to be one of the most fun car to drive. I use it as a daily drive for work. And my commute is usually a 1 1/2hr commute through Boston traffic, and ever since I got this car, the commute is a whole new experience. The DSG is the best transmission i have ever driven. The Bi-Xenons are great, while the fogs adds little to barely noticeable lighting. I love the steering wheel also, and MFD (Multi-Function Display). The only negative things that I have to say about the car is the BUILD, it seems that there are just minor details that aesthetically are unappealing, more minor annoyances but dealable/fixable. Overall, I LOVE THIS CAR!!!!

By Bob Heiner - December 2 - 7:43 amMy 2006 Volkswagen GTI has been great so far. The DSG transmission is a kick in the butt. Thou it is winter here and I cant get a real chance to let it all out, the car seems to handle great even with the all season tires. Come on summer.

Speedy Fun - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By wrecks - December 2 - 1:33 amThis car is super fun to drive. It has the pick up and handling that I want in a sporty little car, but also has the comfort and practicality of being able to go on long road trips. I looked at Mini Coopers and was all set to buy one until I drove this car. It blows the Mini away in interior comfort and space, yet is comparable in performance. Also, the inside quality of the GTI is way better than the Minis which comes off as cheap, plasticy and CRAMMPED. You can actually fit people in the back, pick up groceries, and haul around two 100+ pound dogs in the back, yet always feel like you have the speed, response, and fun of a sports car. Its gas mileage is good too! Buy it...you wont be let down.

Had Previous VWs and GTIs, Best of All! - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By rickerbr - November 26 - 4:06 pmWe traded my wifes 1.8T 5-speed New Beetle Convertible 5 speed on a DSG package 2 GTI. I love this car and it does everything I want in a commuter and performance car. Its far more exclusive than the competition (cough
cough) as Ive only seen 2 other ones in DFW in the two months that Ive had mine. -
Best GTI Yet - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By Eli - November 5 - 6:36 pmThe new Volkswagen 2.0T GTI is the best hatchback and the best sports car in its class. The features that are standard are luxurious compared to other coupes / hatches. Its s DSG gearbox is faster than any manual transmission in the world, and the torque is amazing. The GTI is very quick and handles superbly. This car is absolutely amazing for its price.

love, love, love this car! - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By lilcoop - July 8 - 10:00 ammy first 06 GTI was unfortunately a bit of a lemon. i wrote a sad review titled love/hate relationship. we parted ways, and i subsequently drove 4 other vehicles in 9 months, but i couldnt forget the love i had for my GTI. so i gave VW german engineering another chance, and bought another 06 GTI equipped exactly the same as the first. i love this car! it has been totally reliable, required only routine maintenance (and the occasional recall stuff), handled long road trips and daily commutes with ease. its a blast to drive in town and on the highway. im so glad i gave the GTI a 2d chance. im now a VW convert!
