This Year's Model Updates:

For the old 1.8T GTI, the VR6 style has been dropped and more features, including 17-inch wheels and stability control, are now standard. Starting in the late spring of 2006, the 1.8T Volkswagen GTI will be slowly phased out in favor of a fully redesigned model. As before, this performance hatchback will be based on the upcoming next-generation Golf. Highlights for the new GTI include increased performance, new styling and more interior room.

Pros:
  • Hatchback utility, upscale features and interior design, strong engine and automated manual gearbox of redesigned GTI.
Cons:
  • Higher price than those of its competitors, old GTI lacks oomph.

  • Great Little Car - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

I just picked my GTI up and I love everything about it! I drove a few cars before deciding in this one, including the Honda Civic Si, Mazda3, Scion tC, and Subaru WRX. Each one had things that I liked, but the GTI had it all. It has great acceleration and handling and lots of room for your stuff. I love the stereo. It comes with tons of standard features. The other cars felt kinda cheap in comparison.

  • One of the Best Cars for the Money - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

For the price, this is one of the best cars you can buy. I looked at a Civic Si and RSX Type-S, both of them had no low end power at all, both needed to be reved to the sky and you were ALWAYS shifting. The GTI has torque on tap all the time. It pulls on the highway in 6th gear with little trouble. The design on the interior is well done. The package 0 and 1 however arent as good looking as the package 2 interior, but the cloth seats are great looking. As far as sound systems go, the GTI has nothing near a killer stock system, but thats not why you buy this car. Its ride is great for the every day driver, even for the driver with the sporty side to them. The 6-speed transmission shifts are short and distinct.

  • Waited Two Years... - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

In 2004 at the Paris Auto Salon, I sat in a first-run European-spec 2004 VW GTI in Candy White. The quality of the interior and exquisite attention to detail alone convinced me that I had to have one. Two years later, VWoA released it and I picked one up the second day I was back in the States in Tornado Red (as my German friend said, "the only color of the GTI"). The driving dynamics, build quality, and powerful 2.0TFSI engine all combine to make a magnificent driving experience. I have yet to suffer a single problem (knock on wood) with 5,500 miles. Im lucky to have a wonderful dealer in my area.

  • My Wife Made Me Do It - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

I was debating between getting the GTI and a Jetta TDI. I drove both, loved the fun, performance, handling, and DSG paddles on the steering wheel of the GTI. But really liked the idea of 45 MPG of the TDI. My wife drove both and said get the GTI, its so much fun to drive, even at 53 you are too young for an old man car like the TDI. What can I say, I got the reflex silver, DSG, pkg. 1 GTI about a week later. After 2,500 miles I have no complaints at all, this is a great car. My car came with the heavy duty mats and hatch cover, people have asked where to get them as they are so useful.

  • Best Darn Car Ever! - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

This car has it all. Comfort and Umph! All gears have something to offer: first and second for zipping around the city, third and fourth for passing / getting out of jams, and fifth and sixth for the long trips and showing off. Yes, 5 and 6 still have plenty of pep. 207 lbs. of torque! Oh... Compare your service plan to the GTI.

  • Just what I expected and more - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

I dont really feel like typing out a long review, but Ive owned an 03 GTI before this and the jump from a previous generation to the current generation is so substantial that its as if they rebuilt the entire car from the ground up. The chassis rigidity is superb and the motor is definitely worthy of the awards it has been receiving, both for around the town and even on a track. While this may not be a performer like the STi or Evo, it holds its own quite well. If its stock performance really bugs you enough, there are many tuner choices for just a simple ECU upgrade that pumps the car up ~50 horsepower and ~80 torque. Ive no complaints with the car at all other than no lsd.

I think the GTI is very versatile. It is great at running around town in traffic, etc, and it fantastic fun when no one else is around and you "open" it up. It loves to go fast! The quality of the interior is awesome. It is hard to believe you can get such a great car at this price to me.

The gTI is a sleeper for sure. People are so suprised with this cars performance. Everyone thinks its like a Sentra or Civic. No way, its a tuner car for adults.

I traded up from the Mark IV GTI to this fantastic car. In every way its an improvement over the previous generation. I cant recommend this car highly enough. It feels like Im driving a $30,000+ car. It has a buttery engine, super torque, and high quality refinement in the cabin. Hearing the engine pulse through the interior is a true highlight, as is the exhaust note. When youre not gunning it, the interior is so quiet. It has very little road noise. Its truly an escape after a hard day at work. For those that want some exciting get up and go with a refined, grown-up, classy interior, this is it. It gets my highest recommendation. • Great Car - 2006 Volkswagen GTI

Well, Ill admit I never even test drove a civic si, or any other "competing" car in the same segment. I already know the GTI handles great, has very easy power (especially with mods), and that the looks were leagues ahead of other hatchbacks (interior and out.) I love the plaid seats, the subtle yet aggressive lines, and most of all the motor. With a 2 liter Im making 260 wtq and 230 whp with just chip, exhaust, and intake. I find that more then enough for a daily driver and equal or better then any other stock hatchback out there. Ive had only one problem with the car, an airbag light I got fixed under warranty. Ive watched other hatchbacks come out, and am very glad I chose the GTI.
