This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota now offers a slightly decontented "standard" Prius model that lacks cruise control and heated mirrors but in exchange has a significantly lower base price.

Pros:
  • Outstanding fuel economy, low emissions, generous amount of interior space, easy to maneuver in tight spaces, space-age interior design, a lower price for 2008.
Cons:
  • Less powerful and agile than other midsize sedans, a few disappointing interior plastics.

  • Love my Prius - 2008 Toyota Prius
    By -

My minivan died a week ago and I was forced to buy a new car a year before I really wanted to. I had been looking at the Prius and luckily for me, the dealer had one in stock - my color and package 6. I wasnt sure if I wanted all the extras in package 6, but Im sure glad I got them. I live in South Florida and have only had the car 5 days, so the air conditioning has been on non-stop (78 degrees) since I got it. Im on my first full tank of gas, and after about 115 miles Im averaging just over 50 mpg. Cant wait to see what the mpg is when I dont need A/C (if it ever gets that cool here).

  • Junk - 2008 Toyota Prius
    By -

Ive had this car for about 5 months now and it is really a piece of junk. It does get very good mileage when it isnt having transmission problems at 8,000 miles. I thought Toyotas were supposed to be reliable... not the case on this one. Two transmissions later... Im trading this beast in and buying a dodge caliber next week. The Prius is what I waited months to get.. what a joke.

  • 1 Year Later - More Props for the Prius! - 2008 Toyota Prius
    By -

Its been exactly 1 year and just shy of 20000 miles, and my little blue "bug" just skitters right along, worth every dime! It still gets 50+ mpg, not one problem or glitch, and theres a big plenty of room for the upright bass, a passenger, and other guitars, banjos, fiddles - well, you know what I mean. We had some bitterly cold weather, and "little blue" stayed warm & toasty & CHEAP to run. The only "green" reason for me buying this vehicle was the "green" that I save at the pump, on maintenance... and oh, by the way, the "green" color some peoples eyes turn when they see and ride in it! Ha! I love it! I used to think these vehicles were ugly, ugly, ugly - but not any more...

  • LOVE IT - 2008 Toyota Prius

I Am a home nurse in a very rural county and just love the mpg that I get. My husband and I try to see who can get the best mpg but I dont let him drive it very often though. I just love this car. We have owned Toyotas for years and this one is no disappointment at all.

  • Peaceful, fun, quiet - 2008 Toyota Prius
    By -

I was surprised at how peaceful it is to walk up to the car without having to fumble around for a key, and just having to push a button to start the car (no engine noise at startup and at low speed), and the CVT avoids having to deal with feeling the gears shifting.

  • Great Car but... - 2008 Toyota Prius
    By -

I have owned my 2008 Prius for 3 months and for the most part I love the car. I purchased a fully loaded model and I am shocked at some of the basic features that are sub-standard. The seats are terrible - very uncomfortable. Headlights are not auto! The DVD navigation systems many features are locked out while vehicle is in motion - even if a passenger is onboard. Makes the system really unusable. You cant view MP3 files, song listings on CDs, dial phone numbers on the screen, input destinations (like gas stations) in the navigation, all while the vehicle is moving. Better bet to not purchase the factory installed nav system and purchase aftermarket.

  • Need to improve build quality - 2008 Toyota Prius

Only have the car a less than a month, already hear rattling noise right under the windshield; this noise goes away when I press down the panels (panels on both driver and passager sides are loose!!). Very disappointed.

  • Downsize - for fun and "profit" - 2008 Toyota Prius
    By -

Got rid of my relatively new Audi A6 with every option for a loaded 08 Prius a couple of weeks ago. Couldnt be happier. Maybe I am being small-minded [averaging 48 MPG of regular gas], but the car is fun to drive, holds the highway/road, and no difficult electronics.

  • A Second Prius - 2008 Toyota Prius
    By -

Our household just purchased our 2nd Prius. We have a Tahoe, Carrera C4, STI and a 2004 Prius and found we were always fighting over who gets to drive the Prius. Both Priuss have all options for the model year. The 2008 model has an improved display and easier Nav system operation. (I still prefer my Garmin.) The 2004 was purchased used and has been a great car. These cars are very well built (bulletproof), adequate acceleration, low CG flat handling, very quiet interior, very good sound system, comfortable for long drives and dazzling fuel stinginess. They are great daily drivers. I would not hesitate to buy a used 2nd gen one, 2004 or newer. They will hold their value well!!

  • THREE MONTHS LATER - 2008 Toyota Prius
    By -

Now that we have three months of driving our new Prius, we really enjoy driving it. Have taken a few road trips and it has performed very well. The mileage keeps on improving and I think the reason is that we are adjusting our driving habits. Our second vehicle is a Toyota Avalon and at times we forget which vehicle we are riding in. Remarkable automobile and we just love it. We will wait for the new generation of Prius with its 100 mpg possibility.
