  • Headlight problem - 2006 Toyota Prius

Most of these reviews are given after a day or week of owning! Ive had the 06 Prius for 2 years and 40,000 miles. New problem: at about 37,000 miles, the headlights started going off, one or the other, sometimes both at once. Fixed temporarily by turning lights off and back on. Mechanic cant find anything wrong with it. Toyota should do a recall and fix this. Gas mileage is greatly affected by the quality of the gas you buy, and how you drive! Watch the info display, and buy higher octane, and no gasohol!

I know I was reading about others reporting that they dont get the gas mileage on the sticker, but I can not think back to any car I ever had that matched the sticker milage per gallon. I am averaging about 50 mpg and that is mostly highway. I have taken a few long drives on back roads and have averaged about 55 mpg. If anyone wants to split hairs please do. But, I am very happy with that mileage. I also noticed if you are a "lead foot" forget about getting high mileage but from what I hear you can still expect 45 mpg. By the way the space in my prius is great and I had 4 people on a long trip and no problems. All I can say is look at the gas prices and decide if it is time yet?

Purchased one weeks ago, option pkg 5, 2 mi on odo when bought. Live in MA - mileage running between 42-45 mixed backroad/highway (highway @ avg of 68mph). Rear camera helps, but limited at night in low light, and will still need mirrors. Rear seating comfort ok for short trips (2 hours) - front seats more comfortable, but also concerned re: comfort on long trips - dont think they will be good. Interior build seems tight, very quiet ride. Tracks well on roads at both about town, and highway. Easy to park. JBL sound system has nice sound. Keyless system is a nice feature. Came from a Maxima - miss the pickup and comfort features, but love the MPGs.

  • Fuel Economy Disappointing - 2006 Toyota Prius

Let me state right off that I really love this car. It is easy to drive and performs well. I am somewhat disappointed in the city driving fuel economy. I expected at least 60 MPG driving in the city and havent reached nearly that economy. In NH we have hilly terrain and Im lucky to get 48 MPG driving around town. Highway MPG seem to be around the 55 MPG promised. I love the display that tells you what economy youre getting. It helps you realize fast starts are not the answer and improves your driving habits. Maybe Ill get there yet!

  • I love it - 2006 Toyota Prius

I traded in a Town Car to purchase the Prius, and havent missed it at all. With a total of 26650 miles I have had no problems. Averaging slightly over 45 MPG for the entire 26M miles. It has a very functional design with lots of room for 6 footers. I have taken a couple of trips of around 1300 miles each. The car was comfortable during the trip and I had no problem maintaining inter-state speeds even in the mountains while the car was fully loaded. I would recommend this car to anyone who is looking for good, reliable and economical transportation. This is the first time I have recommended a car, and I wouldnt do it if I wasnt sold on it.

  • Whats not to love about the Prius? - 2006 Toyota Prius
    By -

Whats not to love about the Toyota Prius? Its a blast to drive, not in the same way a high performance sports car is, but in its own unique way. Ive found that the instant MPG readout tends to make me want to drive in ways that maximize the MPGs. This results in me driving slower and more in control than I have in years. The advertised EPA MPG ratings are not far off, if youre careful. Ive been getting around 50 MPG highway and mid 40s around town. The in-town ratings are lower than advertised so far, but I live in northern Michigan which means I need to run the heat and defrosters constantly. This forces the gasoline engine to run a lot more often which leads to lower MPGs.

  • Just a GREAT automobile - 2006 Toyota Prius

I got the car because of the NYS Clean Pass that allows travel in LIE HOV lane w/o any passengers. Mission accomplished. Bought new 4/21/06, now has 12,000 miles. The surprise was the silver lining - anywhere between 48 and 54 mpg saves me thousands in gasoline. I drive a daily round trip of 140 miles - the car replaced by the Prius was a 2004 Mercedes Benz CLK Convertible - Benz @ 20 mpg with high test, Prius @ 50 mpg with regular. Any questions? And the fact that every fill-up costs pennies vs. the Benz says it all. My driveway contains three Mercedes, one BMW, one SAAB and one Prius. Reverse snobbery rules here in my house - the Prius wins HANDS DOWN. No wonder it retains value!

Great car! All my friends are jealous. If you are going to get it...go all the way. Get the GPS! It is fantastic!

  • A Little Gem - 2006 Toyota Prius

Bought an 06 with 61,000 back four years ago. I now have just under 105k on it. This thing is built better than any car I have ever owned. Toyota just thinks everything out so well -- even the tire jack is in an elegant little tray which keeps all of the parts together without rattling. I have never been too mindful of the gas mileage -- I generally get in the low 40s - but the real beauty of this car is the build quality. It is a base model but everything in it works as well today as they day it was built. Cars are expensive and these are more expensive than most cars in their class -- but they are worth every penny for the lack of drama they provide day in and day out.
