This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota has tinkered with the options packages, but otherwise left the Avalon alone. A new luxury package for the XL includes power leather-trimmed seats, 15-inch alloy wheels, remote keyless entry and a JBL audio system. There's also a Sport Luxury package that adds 16-inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler in addition to the items in the luxury package.

Pros:
  • Lexus-like quality, smooth V6 engine, huge rear seat.
Cons:
  • High price tag, funky dash design, toothy chrome grille.

  • Nice cruiser roomy - noisy shocks - 2002 Toyota Avalon

Have put about 30k on mine since buying new. Had to replace brakes. It is based on the same platform as the 97-2002 Camry. I owned a 1998 Camry which had shocks that made knocking noises over bumpy pavement. This Avalon, while very serene, also does the same thing. Maybe the bushings? Its annoying considering the rest of the car is pretty tight. Rear door squeaks when opening. Otherwise, it has been a reliable, relaxing vehicle.

i purchased my avalon on a feb 2001, recently owning a tercel. this car is plain ugly such as the poor imatation of a 95 s class tail lights, the grill which is too big with such bad looking fake chrome and the 15 inch rims with have no style, and also the boxy styling on the top it looks like a tall box on wheels far away. on the other hand avalons v6 has great acceration for a boat but steering a little off which is to light. it has a extremly quiet cabin, and offers gernous leg room in the back. the sound system is GREAT in this car, this 6 inch wroofer sounds like a 15 inch when turned loud. what should i call this car....hmmm its just like a old man lexus es300.

We purchased our Avalon in February 2002 and think its a very confortable car with great reliability. I do wish it had more power for passing.

This vehicle gets very good gas mileage. It has very good, get up and go power. With 80,000 miles, we have had no major mechanical incidents. We love the roomy trunk space, as well as the full size spare tire. The one negative: the trunk lid sounds like a piece of tin when one shuts it giving a sense of cheapness. Otherwise, an excellent purchase. Resale value is not yet known but we will know soon.

Great ride, handles well, very high quality.

  • Just really ugly - 2002 Toyota Avalon

Had my 2001 for a year now. No problems except for the unease about oil sludging reported here and absolutely arrogant letter from Toyota. In the context in which I bought this car [park ave substitute], it performs well. Of course the "styling" is really bad. As with many others, a test drive sold me.

  • Try It - 2002 Toyota Avalon

Traded Infinity G20 for Avalon. At the outset, felt the difference, in the ride, entrance and exit factors, comfort, accommodations, fuel efficiency was even better than the G20. The interior of the cabin and the trunk space was tremendous. May not be the best in outward looks, but I dont think any one would steal this car. Try it, you might like it and buy it.

We needed a little more room so the Avalon was the one for us. We are happy with the car but if I could a little more pick-up would be nice. The brake could be better but it is not a huge problem. There was a problem with the brakes after 2500 miles, the dealer resurfaced the rotors which fixed the problem. I expected the rotors to be replaced but the dealer said it was Toyota policy to repair. Well I sent an E-mail to the company and nothing came of it.

  • Still a lot to work on - 2002 Toyota Avalon

Car is OK overall. Few problems: 1. Front window is crap (5 scratches on it in 2 years) 2. Losing all power if you put regular gas. 3. Hard to reach front display. 4. No alarm on XLS Style 5. Brake shose must be replased after 25k (should be after 40k)
