This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota has tinkered with the options packages, but otherwise left the Avalon alone. A new luxury package for the XL includes power leather-trimmed seats, 15-inch alloy wheels, remote keyless entry and a JBL audio system. There's also a Sport Luxury package that adds 16-inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler in addition to the items in the luxury package.

Pros:
  • Lexus-like quality, smooth V6 engine, huge rear seat.
Cons:
  • High price tag, funky dash design, toothy chrome grille.

  • Great car but too pricey!!! - 2002 Toyota Avalon

    I traded a 2001 Chrysler 300M on my 2002 Avalon XLS. It was like going from a nightmare to a great dream. This vehicle drives good, is comfortable, and is a much better made vehicle than the Chryslers...

  • Disappointing Options - 2002 Toyota Avalon

    The Avalon XLS is very good in a lot of ways, but some of the options are so poorly designed that they are junk. The "trip computer" has a feature that calculates average gas mileage - a must-have on my shopping list - but it resets every time the ignition is turned off! Its worthless! It also calculates trip time (up to 99 hours!) but that also resets when the engine is turned off. The cruise control looses its memory and has to be reset if you slow to under 40. Im disappointed. My 1990 Taurus did better on these and other features.

    Very roomy and comfortable. Smooth powerful engine. Good mileage. Terrible dash rattle. Sounds like two blocks of wood stiking each other. Dealer has been attempting to repair for last three months. Absent the dash problem , a perfect auto. Toyota quality? :{

    A very nicely crafted, refined, and roomy, comfortable sedan. I have driven and/or ridden in several late model Luxury brands, and this vehicle equals and usually exceeds the standards of those vehicles!

    I really like the car. I bought a 2002 with most of the extras, moon roof, heated seats, 16" wheels etc The radio with the JBL is great. On the highway I get great miledge but not too good in the city.

    comfortable ride, good acceleration, good amenities. However, transaxle has whine between 30 and 40 mph; wind noise around outside mirrors. Shouldnt have these problems with top of line Toyota and for the price.

  • Whta is Wrong? - 2002 Toyota Avalon

    With everything else near excellent, Toyota Avalon XLS has very annoying whooping noise on decelaration when the car is slowing from 40 mph to stop. This noise like a turbine slong down.

    This is argueably the nicest car I have ever owned and I drove a Mercedes for years before this. This is really a Lexus dressed down in a Toyota badge.

  • Ugly car but great in overall quality - 2002 Toyota Avalon

    Looked at many other vehicles. I set my mind on purchasing the Acura TL until a family member asked me to drive the new 2000 Avalon. I hated the external design of the car and had my mind set on hating the car until I was given the keys to this vehicle and drove it for an afternoon. Needless to say Im an owner. I selected every option available on the car and do not regret it. GREAT Car!!!
