This Year's Model Updates:

Subaru completely redesigns the Impreza and brings a high-performance turbocharged WRX variant into the fold to offer enthusiasts the opportunity to drive a powerful, all-wheel-drive sport sedan without breaking the bank. All Imprezas benefit from improvements in performance, refinement and safety. Along with the Impreza's trip upmarket come revised trim levels consisting of two sedans (WRX and 2.5 RS) and three wagons (WRX, Outback Sport and 2.5 TS Sport Wagon). The coupe body style has been dropped.

Pros:
  • A stout 227 horsepower in the WRX, all-wheel drive, a variety of sedans and wagons to choose from.
Cons:
  • No more coupe, extroverted styling may be too much for some.

  • Great Car - 2002 Subaru Impreza

The RS is a great car. You cant beat the 4WD, which was a great comfort on the winter roads. The car has great torque, low and high end, and is a riot o drive. It hugs the road and is fantastic.

Lots of fun, great handling, wonderful braking, plenty of power, wagon versatility, aggressive looks. A classic pocket rocket. Crummy gas mileage, premium gas, occasional turbo lag. Shift not as sweet as Honda/Acura, but AWD beats front-wheel drive every time. Great car for the price, but as soon as Honda makes something similar, Im buying that.

  • My Fiance Forbid Me To Sell This Car - 2002 Subaru Impreza

Seriously. When I was having money issues and seriously strapped for cash, she wouldnt let me sell it - because she knew how much I LOVE this car! I seriously dont think I ever will, even when I eventually replace it with another car. This little machine is destined for classic status, just like the 60s era Mustangs, Corvettes, and Camaros. There are definite issues with this car (like with any car). The paint is pretty thin and chips too easily, and the interior is nice, but definitely not luxury. Gas mileage is mediocre (although pretty good for a car with this kind of performance). But when you get right down to it, this car is simply a blast to drive.

I was thrilled after waiting 7 years for this puppy. Shortly after purchase I had to get both front struts replaced as they were bad, driver side window worked on three times for squeeking, dash rattles inside (third time) and the computer on it had to be sent away for a week after two months of driving! This is all with normal driving and no modifications. Its a blast to drive, but way too many problems for the price tag and the lack of quality. I recommend looking at alternatives.

  • 1yr later and Id buy it again - 2002 Subaru Impreza

Thought Id throw in my 2cents after owning this car for a full year. Bought new in Feb 02 and is honestly some of the best money Ive ever spent. Great acceleration, nice compromise of handling and comfort, and ohh, the Momo steering wheel. Seriously, this has to be one of the most meatiest factory steering wheels in any vehicle. I own a 5 speed and could live without the clutch shudder, which is my biggest gripe. But at the end of the day, if it were ever stolen or totalled, I would be rushing out to buy another.

  • Oh My- What Fun - 2002 Subaru Impreza
    By -

Have had the car for 2 months. Cant get over the way the car performs. I came from a 92 GTI and thsi car rocks. Cant get over the rush of accelerations each time the tach hits 3K. Have to keep the turbo spooled to get the most out of the engine, but nothing beats crusiing along with the engine growkling along at the sweet spot. Oh and the AWD system is awesome. The car is amazing at spirited turns. Best bang for the buck. But if you are going to complain about the way the car looks or kack of leather and sunroof- This car is not for you.. You are just missing the point on what this car is about.

Fast! Fun! Turbo! Nothing like the feeling of hitting the turbo going onto a entrance ramp to the interstate. You up to 100mph in no-time.

  • Hell of a lot of fun - 2002 Subaru Impreza

Not many people think "wow" when you just told them you bought a Subaru, but give them a ride, and theyll be grinning so hard, they cant say anything. The car itself carries almost no frills, and doesnt seem worth the price they ask, but one must also realize that the car is built from the front seat forward. Very small trunk, smallish back seating, great front seats, definitely built for the driver. A few squeaks here and there, but thats expected out of any car less than $30K. It really is great fun.

I have been driving the vehicle for just over 8 weeks. I traded in a 2000 Trans Am for my WRX. Excellent decision! This car is by far the most fun car Ive ever driven! I find myself catching air on a consistent basis and drifting through highway on and off ramps whether wet or dry. The balance and poise of this car is unbelievable.

  • Great little grocery getter - 2002 Subaru Impreza

Perfect car for commuting and even some longer drives. Used mostly in the winter, as I commute via motorcycle in the warmer months. Subie is great in the snow, naturally, though I did add 4 snows to help power through the nasty winter last season. Fresh snow up to 18" didnt stop her; the spoiler would plow the snow into my garage if we had a nasty storm during the day. If you can get past the interior plastics and the poor exterior paint quality when youre driving, and you dont give a hoot what your snooty neighbors think, the WRX is an excellent tool for real driving.
