Overview & Reviews
The Maxima has been fully redesigned for 2004. It now rides on the same underpinnings as the well-received Nissan Altima. This year's Maxima is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous version.
- Roomy interior, lots of upscale options, sweet V6, available with a manual transmission.
- Some small, oddly arranged controls.

Chose over G35 at last minute - 2004 Nissan Maxima
By WdnUlik2no - January 1 - 10:00 amI was all set to get the G35 until the Infiniti dealer let me drive the G over to compare it with the Max one last time. Some major pluses IMO over the G35 is there is more space, bigger tires, overall the car looks better, the interior is done slightly better and you get a lot more options for the same price. The areas where the G35 stand out is 1) pampering at infiniti dealers 2) has better handling than the Max. 3) luxury. Long term wise the G is probally better overall but if you dont plan to keep cars for more than 3 or 4 years then the max is better.

Good car, not quite a great car. - 2004 Nissan Maxima
By NW Driver - December 9 - 7:00 pmThe 04 is the 3rd Maxima Ive owned (95 GXE &99 GLE previously). The redesign caught my eye as Nissan really upgraded from the previous bland edition. Looked initially at the SL model, but the handling of the SE sold me. It took me awhile to get used to the firmer feel, but when you can get it on the highway, it rides very smooth. The brushed aluminum vs. the wood grain on the inside took some getting used to, but now I really like it. Have gotten several positive comments from passengers and others about the overall look of the car.

Wouldnt buy it again - 2004 Nissan Maxima
By Rachel - October 13 - 11:03 amBought this car after owning an Acura and a Camry. Both the Acura and Camry which are now 15 years old have had less problems than this Maxima. Had to have transmission replaced after warranty ran out. AC compressor had to be replaced. Motor went out on the driver seat and it will not move- not worth the expense ($250) to replace it. There is a constant rattle in the back panel. Nissan has not helped one bit with any of this or with the poor service and the run around I got at a particular Nissan dealership. Lastly the interior design with the radio, temp control, etc. is terrible and difficult to use while driving with all those buttons. I will never buy another Nissan. Get a Camry!

To the Max - 2004 Nissan Maxima
By Lenny B - October 8 - 10:00 amAfter five years in a Volvo, its a true pleasure to be back in a Maxima. Everywhere I go someone is looking at and complementing this car. I continue to be suprised at the available performance when I need to use the accelerator. After driving the SE model and the Infinity G35 sedan I selected the SL for its quietluxurious ride and standard features. With the 320 w Bose audio system playing my favorite CD I become lost in the spacious cabin and the idea of "Road Rage" is a thing of the past. Several switches located on the dash and in the center console could be relocated to allow the operator to see them.

Thin line between love and hate - 2004 Nissan Maxima
By E.Zinn - September 29 - 4:16 amHaving bought this car as a demo with 5000 miles on it I attributed many of its brake, strut, rotor problems to being abused by the dealer. After reading many of these reviews now I realize they are design issues. Despite its flaws (see suggested improvements), overall I am happy with the car. I get about 430 miles per tank for the type of driving I do which is a hybrid of mostly highway/city driving. The car has plenty of room for 4 adults. Acceleration is excellent, just be prepared for the torque steering when you punch it. Car pulls when stopping and steering wheel shimmies on highway. Replaced horrible goodyear tires with Michelin Pilot MXM4 and have been 100% happy with them.

Great car, too bad it burns oil! - 2004 Nissan Maxima
By KevinWilkin - August 14 - 6:40 pmIve read some reviews, and see the same problems I have. Minor things such as peeling grilles, easily scratched interior plastic & routine balancing the tires I can live with. My Max started to burn oil at 60K. Now before you all say I abused the car, Im a grown 50 year old male that drives normally, changes oil every 4K etc. Of course when I brought the car in at 60K for the oil burning Im told, "sorry out of warranty". Fine, just remember Nissan, a happy customer tells his friends about a great car. A scorned customer tells the world!

This Car Will Always Be Golden - 2004 Nissan Maxima
By SuperMax - June 10 - 10:00 amThis car has never been better. Nice quiet ride with very aggressive and responsive pulls at hard acceleration. Its a 2005 so it doesnt have too many bugs, but thats yet to be witnessed. An overall good value.

Better than a Beemer - 2004 Nissan Maxima
By JPG - April 28 - 10:00 amIts a great car, the engine performance is all I had hoped for. I love that there is a lot of space inside and compared to both the 3 and new 5 series BMW, I feel you get a lot more bang for your buck, especially when you consider maintenance costs. The navigation system is a big plus for me and although it took some time to figure out it has some great features!

a look back - 2004 Nissan Maxima
By ew - April 21 - 2:00 amThe Maxima has been a pleasure to drive. The handling is excellent and the car is quick! Many people have stopped me to ask questions. It looks good. I have two friends that have riden and driven my Maxima and both have ordered the 2005 model. This is the 3rd Nisson Ive had and all have had incredible reliability. I will probably trade my 2000 SUV in on a 2005 Pathfinder.
