This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been fully redesigned for 2004. It now rides on the same underpinnings as the well-received Nissan Altima. This year's Maxima is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous version.

Pros:
  • Roomy interior, lots of upscale options, sweet V6, available with a manual transmission.
Cons:
  • Some small, oddly arranged controls.

Looked long and hard right across the board from accura to volvo there was good and bad for all for me the Max was it, large inside I got the four seat car and it came with alot more than the is300 . the motor has been out for years and has good power the 5 speed auto is smooth and works well (did not drive the 6 speed) I keep my cars for years did not want to be driving a 6 speed when Im 65 . Have not been able to get the 35 mpg clamed but the car will get 31mpg all day at 110>120 kph and I have recived 900km out of a tank of gas out of a 75 ltr tank with left over. Over all very happy with the car can not go wrong with this one.

  • Too Big, Too Expensive, Too Much like.. - 2004 Nissan Maxima

The Altima!! Looks like an oversized Altima. Even though it has 10 more hp its slower than the 2002/2003 model because it gained 150+ pounds! $35K for a FWD V6 Nissan Maxima??? The G35 would make more sense. 2004 Maxima lost its uniqueness as a flagship. For less, you can get an Altima, for the same price, get the G35

From a styling point of view the car is very appealing {to most people). You get alot of positive comments from passers by and freinds.Very comfortable and roomy. Very well put together with few quality flaws.I am somewhat dissappointed with the responsiveness of the engine\transmission combo. For 265 horses I thought the car would pull stronger.I am very demanding and critical with respect to acceleration and would have expected more out of this engine. As well the tipronic upshifts to soon for my liking, shifting well above redline. The ride is firm, and the car handles very well for its size.Overall good value for your dollar

Driving the 2004 Maxima SE with journey package is a true joy. With the features of a Cadilac, the acceleration of a BMW and the options rivaling the A6 this new Maxima is simply a joy. It turns heads too! With quality fit and finish Nissan hit a homerun with the new design.

  • Transmission Shot - 2004 Nissan Maxima

I purchased a 04 max, from the beginning ive had problems. The headliner had to be replaced because the fabric was peeling. The brakes have been awful, had to replace the sun roof, not the oval shaped one. The mileage is currently 71,000 miles and my transmission is completely shot. The car would jerk in the gears, especially when Im reversing then shifting to drive. The dealer says there are metal shavings inside the transmission and it needs to be replaced. This is gonna cost me $4900, parts and labor. I owe 2 more months payment on the car. When I finally own it, I cant drive it. Was gonna buy an Armada, but now I will never buy another Nissan again. Very disappointed.

  • withholding judgment - 2004 Nissan Maxima

The power train is great. Smooth, quiet and quick acceleration. The engine is definitely the best feature of this vehicle. But reliability is a question and quality of interior is not on level of Camry or Accord. Still thinking that the wiser choice would have been the Accord; but will withhold judgment so long as the reliability is much better than average.

  • Lower Quality interior than piror years - 2004 Nissan Maxima

My 4th Maxima. This is by far the poorest quality interior ever had with Maxima. Dependability & quality are still big draw but gone is the rich leather & cushy seats. More austere interior with your choice of quasi titanium or plastic formica veneer faux woodgrain trim. Dont put your arm on the armrest after the car sits in the sun awhile. OUCH! May entice Altima crowd to move up a model, but left us grannies out in the cold. Sorely tempted by Infinity which is basically the old Maxima, but husband had other ideas. Missing my 1996 Maxima with rich cushy black leather interior & great comfort. (& no tacky plastic trim panels)

Nice styling... BMW influence.....roomy...sterile inside..harsher ride because of low profile tires..21 mph....too fast for front wheel drive...needs 4 wheel drive like Infinity..wait till 2007

  • 2004 Maxima- OH NO - 2004 Nissan Maxima

The worst turn radius ever imaginable, it turns like a bus. After hearing about its safety, I see why its equipped with so many air bags. Reports say that it has the worst safety rating in its class. My car was hit by a shopping cart in a parking lot and sustained unbelievable damage. A SHOPPING CART!! Its a comfortable, beautiful car. I cant get over the fact that it dents so easily, which is backed up by the safety rating, In an accident you are probably totalled out. For this reason after only 9000 miles, Im looking for another car. And the deal I received at Victory Nissan is a whole different story. Avoid them at all costs. BUYER BEWARE.I should have listened to others.

  • Lovin it so far! - 2004 Nissan Maxima

I use to own a Lexus GS 300 and the lease ran out so rather than purchase that car at $22k I looked into buying a new mid size car. Im sure glad I did because my new Maxima has greater acceleration and more front and rear leg room. I had bought my lexus new back in 1999 and remember had great I thought that car was fun to drive but this car will pin you to the seat if you hit the gas. I did have great luck from a quality stand point from my Lexus so Im extremely interested in how this Nissan will hold up. If it holds up over time I think I will have made a great decision. I will have also saved a ton of money.
