This Year's Model Updates:

The M-Class' navigation system enters the 21st century by ditching the old CD-ROM-based design for a much more efficient DVD-based setup. This is the lone change as the MLs received numerous updates last year.

Pros:
  • Safe, comfortable, brisk performance, surefooted in bad weather.
Cons:
  • On-road handling eclipsed by newer crossover SUVs, gets pricey fast if buyer gets tempted by too many options.

Youre insane if you dont buy this SUV and even nuttier if you dont get a 320 instead of the 350. This is a great all around SUV. The gas mileage is not too bad, and you get real off-road capability if you need it (and sometimes up north you need it in the snow, regardless of what the advocates of "carlike" SUVs say). I think the 320 is a fantastic bargain right now. The dealers are motivated to sell, and I cant tell the difference in power between the two. And when push comes to shove, you just cant beat Benz customer service.

  • MY ML 500 - 2003 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

FUN CAR TO DRIVE, IT IS VERY FAST AND A VERY GOOD RIDE. THE PROBLEMS I HAVE HAD WITH MY ML500 IS NOISY BRAKES, REAR TIRES WEARING OUT PREMATURLY AND BAD CUP HOLDERS. DEALERSHIP STATES THERE ARE NO CURRENT FIX FOR ABOVE PROBLEMS BUT THEY ARE VERY AWARE OF THEM. ALSO IT SEEMS THE PAINT IS VERY THIN. IT CHIPS VERY EASY.

  • Great Car! - 2003 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I purchased the ML500 12 months old and got a great deal, nearly half off and with a 100,000 8 year warranty. I cant believe I lived without GPS for so long. It is not as smooth as my S- class but now I can haul stuff. I would not want to be in another car after a serious accident last year. I will take poor milage for the safety trade-off.

Very comfortable seats. Very good gas mileage for engine and type of vehicle. 15 in town; 19-21 on road. Very good handling and drivability. Ride slightly harsh. Excellent turning circle. Poor brake wear. New rotors and pads every 18-22 M miles at a ludicrous cost. Front shocks needed replacement at 47,000 miles. Thank goodness car is still under warranty. Dealer cost to replace $850. Power steering hose clamp blew at 40,000 miles. BAS went at 42,000. Reliability poor for a premium brand.

  • Great all round SUV - 2003 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

This is my third ML, owned a 2000 430, a 2002 500 and now just took delivery of my 03 ML500 with the Inspiration Pkg. Handling and performance is fantastic but to make it even better I changed the springs to lower the vehicle ~1 1/2" - it really improves the cornering performance and still leaves a little travel for minor off- roading.

  • A Few Flaws - 2003 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Got an ML 350 with 3rd row seating. Great option for those with children under 12 as they fold out of the way sideways and can be removed entirely pretty easily. Car is beautiful with Inspiration pkg and upgraded sound system is a must. I knew mpg wasnt going to be good, but faulty gas gauge sensor has made it worse (Could only go 200 miles on a tank, as sensor wasnt reading final 7 gallons or so). Also the moonroof didnt open properly at first and after getting it fixed, the weatherstripping around it is now falling off. I am hopeful dealer will be able to fix permanently. All in all, fun car to drive with a few production defects.

  • Chrysler quality- M Benz price - 2003 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

This SUV has been very disappointing. The quality control is lacking. Numerous shop visits without satisfaction and a dealer who cannot get it right. I will never buy a MB product again.

  • Mercedes ML 500 beats the rest - 2003 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

Ive test driven the BMW, Acura, Lexus and the new Volvo SUVs, some several times, and the ML 500 beats them all. The car drives like a dream, has power to spare, and has many great features, like its easy to use nav system. Plus you can feel safe and secure in this SUV. Its safety features are second to none. Whats best about Mercedes is how your treated before, during and after the purchase of the vehicle. At Mercedes there is no presure, they want you to make the right purchase for yourself, and you feel welcomed at the dealership even after you purchase the vehicle.
