This Year's Model Updates:

The Odyssey gains a number of improvements this year. Included with the Odyssey 2.1 upgrade is more power, a new five-speed transmission, standard rear disc brakes and side airbags, optional leather seating and DVD entertainment, two new exterior colors and minor interior storage refinements.

Pros:
  • Excellent crash-test scores, huge interior, fold-flat third-row seat, powerful V6, optional navigation and entertainment system, a bargain at sticker price.
Cons:
  • Slow power sliding doors, dealer markup still a possibility.

  • Tranny, tranny, tranny, tranny! - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

The 2002 Honda Odyssey is an ideal family car and ours has managed to ferry us on many memorable trips. When its not undergoing repair, were happy with almost every aspect of the van. However, almost alone among Hondas, this particular model has had persistent problems with its automatic transmission. For us, the problem has recurred with EACH transmission installed to replace the original equipment. The initial transmission was the subject of a national recall (Honda Service Bulletin 04-021). We have also replaced the original tranny THREE times. No kidding!! Were very disappointed.

  • Great Van... Trans went out at 65k - 2002 Honda Odyssey

The Odyssey is a great minivan, powerful and good looking. Smartly designed interior and very comfortable to ride in.

  • Transmission Woes - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

Just got an estimate from the dealer for a new transmission in the amount of $ 5000 and thats with the old PCM (the computer module that dictates how the transmission shifts). Its another $1200 for a new PCM that will supposedly increase the life of these transmissions. This car is only 6 years old. The transmission should last longer in my opinion. I bought Honda because I thought they built reliable cars. This was a disappointment and I will no doubt look to other makes.

  • 2002 Odyssey purchased new - 2002 Honda Odyssey

We purchased this van new and now have 134,000 miles on it with no major problems. The body is in excellent condition with no rust and all features work well. We have been totally satisfied with this vehicle and will purchase another one.

  • Poor Transmissions.... - 2002 Honda Odyssey

Bought new Feb 2002 - Took to dealer twice in Oct 2005 for transmission slipping at 35-40 mph. Dealer couldnt find problem. After evacuating from WILMA, transmission fails 6 hrs from home in Nov 05. Local dealer replaces under extended warranty (54,000 miles). Similar problems come back in Jan 07. Dealer finds nothing first two tries. - In Dec 07 dealer reports transmission is bad and needs to be replaced. Covered under extended warranty. (89,500 miles). Feb 08 extended warranty expires - Apr 08 problems resurface. May 08 dealer reports transmission bad and needs to be replaced. Covered under Honda parts warranty (1 yr). Google for more info on 02 Odyssey transmissions.

  • Good van, but crooked seats. - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

This van rides well, drives well, and works well. But I have had a terrible time getting Honda Motor Corp to resolve the crooked front seat problem with their design. Both the driver- side and passenger-side front seats lean and angle into the center of the van making for a very uncomfortable ride. I contacted the 800 customer service number, but all they would do is say (very nicely) they could not do anything about it. The Service Manager of the Honda dealer admits the seats are crooked, but after contacting Honda Engineering, says that all of the Odyssey seats are like that. Doesnt anybody notice this about the seats besides me?

  • SUV Replacement - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

I bought our Odyssey to replace a Nissan Pathfinder after my second son was born & we realized that the SUV was not going to cut it space-wise. We needed something that could pull our pop-up and lug all the things that a typical family hauls around for traveling together. So far the van has been excellent with no major problems and returns excellent gas mileage in comparison to our old vehicle. On one extended trip we averaged between 26 & 28 mpg. Short trips return around 18.5, which is about what our SUV got on the highway. The van drives well and at 240 hp, it has plenty of guts for merging, passing, and towing. Not as cool as my previous sports cars, but not bad and really handy.

  • Overrated - 2002 Honda Odyssey

We purchased our 2001 EX Odyssey in Lompoc, CA. After 5 months of driving, the rear sliding doors began to act up. They would not close completely which caused the alarm to go off. We took it back to the dealer and did adjustments. This continued to happen several times and the dealer said I need to clean off the connections when this happens again. When you pay $28,000 for something you expect it to work properly. We are at the point now to have them remove the automatic sliding door feature and install manual doors.I contacted Honda Customer Service and they really did not have any suggestions to fix the matter.

  • Thrilled or Not - Still Best Van - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

Was looking for room for my family of 5 and quality to last. Owned 2 Hondas prior. Hey folks, dont blame Honda for the build quality - except for allowing it to be built in the US! Had an ABSOLUTELY trouble-free Civic and still have a CR-V - BOTH built in Japan. DESPITE the US build and occasional American creeks, we still love it.

  • Good All-Around Van - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

Ive driven every mini-van offered in the U.S. (something like 16 of them) and this was the best overall. High horsepower coupled with standard features that are packages everywhere else and that great 3rd row magic seat scored high with me. Im hoping that it will prove the Honda hype about reliability. One thing thats nice to know is that practically every car, truck, or van on the planet depreciates faster than this one.
