This Year's Model Updates:

The Odyssey gains a number of improvements this year. Included with the Odyssey 2.1 upgrade is more power, a new five-speed transmission, standard rear disc brakes and side airbags, optional leather seating and DVD entertainment, two new exterior colors and minor interior storage refinements.

Pros:
  • Excellent crash-test scores, huge interior, fold-flat third-row seat, powerful V6, optional navigation and entertainment system, a bargain at sticker price.
Cons:
  • Slow power sliding doors, dealer markup still a possibility.

Bought my 02 Ody EX with 79K miles and 10K later I am happy with my decision. Had to replace EGR for $100 but that was pretty minor. Averaging about 21 MPG which is decent. Roomy and folding 3rd row seat is the best.

  • Loveda van but... - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

Its a great van. Lots of room...drives like a sedan...visibility is great...an SUV without a nose. However, I have had two small ~ problems. The van pulled to the right. Honda said it was the tires (Bridgestones). Bridgestone said it was the allignment. It said just fix it. Both were cooperative. Bridgeston replaced all the tires, but it still pulls??? Anyone else experience this?

  • Be Aware Tranny Recall - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

Had the vehicle a few months and started having tranny problems (not catching going from 2nd to 3rd gear). This model (and similar Honda vehicles) have a recall on the transmission...it has to have a kit installed or the tranny replaced. Other than that, weve been satisfied, its very peppy compared to the Windstar I used to have. The engine is much quieter too, although, on the road it doesnt seem remarkably quiet.

  • Solid Reliability - 2002 Honda Odyssey

I bought the Nav Model new and have only needed lube changes in 90k miles. The brakes are still good. The GPS is easy to use and very useful but has tricked me sometimes. I have few complaints but am thinking about a new Mini van now and dazzled by the high tech sizzle of the Quest but concerned about some of the negative reviews. But then this model of Ody has attracted far more complaints and I have had scant concern in the 90 k I have driven. My Ody drives like it is almost broken in and ready for more action but Oh!!! the Quests sleak, sporty, gizmo laden, futuristic, earthbound space shuttle appeal quickens the heart of a true technofile. I hope I luck out and get as good as my Oddy.

  • Hate paying markup - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

I hate paying $5,000 markup and having the salesmen tell me basically "go somewhere else if you dont want to pay it" Im having regrets now. Its kinda noisy and Im having trouble with the sliding doors. The service department is just as arrogant as the salespeople. "If you dont like our service go somewhere else". Great handling and great storage area. But I hate getting ripped off. Maybe next time Ill try another model.

  • love everything but the power doors - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

My wife (410") wanted the power seat in the EX package. That forces you to take the power doors. We do a lot of pull up to the curb and drop the kids. There are a lot of times when the older kids try and open or close the door when the car is not in Park (car pool line). The doors beep and until they let you try again. The doors are a safety problem IMO. They are difficult to open in the case of an accident. (no power or car not in park and the kids cant get out) The doors are also difficult to open if the battery is dead. The doors cant be disabled because of motor drag. The simple climate system in the LX is more flexible in some situations.

  • honda hype - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

I have never owned a Honda before thisvan. I will never own another. Weve had the belt tensioner recalled, the transmission problem with the second gear fixed, a sliding door broken radio control on the steering fixed and now the warranty is up. 300 miles past and now the SRS system failed and we have to pay over $600 to fix it. Dropping the car off with a family of 5 and no courtesy car is a great inconvenience. Dont believe the Honda hype on this car!

  • HONDA RELIABILITY? - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

I bought this Odyssey because it is slightly bigger than the Sienna. BIG MISTAKE! Vibrate at around 40-60mph. Not tires. Balance new tires 3X. ALL dash lights come on intermittenly. Trac and engine lite stayed on. Cost $168 to replace an evap. After checking google, found out this van has 3 recalls, one has to do with 2nd gear. Honda advisor said, that should fix tranny problem. Had the Odyssey for 2 months, I dont trust this van on a long trip. Will get rid of it before I have to put lots of money into it since Honda will not warranty the tranny as they do on the 99-01 Odyssey (100K). Own Honda/Acura cars before, never any problems. Will buy another Toyota. Never had problems.

  • Honda Odyssey = Transmission problems - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

dont be fooled by all the glowing reviews on this minivan. yes it has many features and comforts but so do other models and they come without all the issues that plague this vehicle. two main components of any automobile are engine, and transmission design flaws material defects etc. in these major components usually result in a constant repair battle for the life of the vehicle as is the case for the honda odyssey my tranny was replaced at 40k and then the 2nd tranny was pulled and inspected under a honda recall last summer. I just got another recall notice 11/04 reguarding more tranny issues. dont walk run far away from this honda. other failed components dvd screen, driver seat.
