  • Honda Civic Hybrid Transmission Failure - 2003 Honda Civic
    By -

I bought this car second hand from a buick dealer and car checked out as being clean. I spent a premium price for a hybrid versus a Civic of comparable age. At 44,000 miles the trnsmission failed and I face a $3,500 bill for a refurbished transmission since I was told they do not make new transmissions for this car. Question is whether the original transmission was deficient to begin with. Fuel economy just OK at 42 mpg which includes hyway and local driving in last 4,000 miles. I know it was not an economic decission to buy a hybrid but to add the cost of a new transmission at only 44,000 miles really makes me wonder if I will ever buy a hybrid again.

  • 03 EX: none better at its price - 2003 Honda Civic

I can tell you that as a long-time Honda civic owner this version is by far the most refined, sporty and reliable to date...far nicer than the 99 I recently parted with and far superior to anything in its price range. The fit and finish are top- notch. The interior is very stylish and I much prefer the 03 cloth vs the 02 and older cloth interior. I can only think of two complaints: 1) the engine does seem a bit louder than my 99 did. 2) the new interior fabric, while very nice, doesnt seem to allow you to move around easily...it "hugs" you, not allowing you to move about very easily (get in one and youll see what i mean).

  • I love this car - 2003 Honda Civic

Over the past 3 years, weve never had any problems with this car. Havent had any repairs done, just the regular maintenance. When I drive the car, it consistently gets 45-52 mpg (depending on whether its highway or city; summer or winter and whether the bike rack is on the roof); my husband gets a little lower--probably 42-51. Driving styles will definitely impact the mileage. As a short person, I love that I can see out of the car and the blind spots are minimal. Only having to get gas once every 4-6 weeks is a major plus; and weve driven the car from Chicago to Syracuse, NY on more than one occasion (a 12 hour drive), using just one tank of gas.

  • Pros and Cons - 2003 Honda Civic

This car is an excellent small car, with the emphasis on small. If you are over 6 ft. tall you cannot sit in the back of this car without hitting your head on the roof. Also, the sunroof cuts off another couple of inches in the front, so once again 6 ft. + is very tight, but you can get another inch or so if you lower the seet all the way. Apparently, the 2003 have a rougher idle than the 2002s or at least that is what the dealership is telling me. I have not had it in yet, but the idle is annoying.

  • Amazed!!!!!! - 2003 Honda Civic

I had looked into many other cars in this category, and the Civic EX was by far the most impressive, after learning about the almost non-existant depreciation rate, it seemed like a no brain-er. Love the new dash!

  • Almost Perfect - 2003 Honda Civic

I love the way my civic looks both inside and out. The backseat is very comfortable for a two-door car. The dashboard, including the gauges, are much more impressive than other compact cars that i was looking into buying.

  • Great little car - 2003 Honda Civic

We missed purchasing the car during the initial shipment in our area, but after contacting over 40 dealers in our state, we lucked out and found a dealer who still had one in their showroom. We drove 400 miles to buy this car, and we couldnt be more pleased. It didnt even take a whole tank of gas to drive it home! The ride is smooth, the seats are comfortable, the vehicle is attractive both inside and out, and I take delightful glee in seeing the "average mpg" display gauge, which at this time is showing 46.7mpg (we drive on hills). Were just tickled!

  • Decent Commuter - 2003 Honda Civic

My Civic has been extremely reliable and gets great gas mileage (around 33mpg average in mixed driving). Honda dealers are also nice to work with after purchase for in-warranty and out of warranty service.

  • 2003 Honda Civic LX - 2003 Honda Civic

I got this car from a used car dealer about 1 year ago, and have not had any problems whatsoever. I will say that the seats arent all that comforting for long rides and the default radio system lacks, but aside from this, no complaints. Overall, this car is very reliable.

  • Great car! - 2003 Honda Civic

The car has been really great - good gas mileage if you drive it correctly and its comfortable to drive once youre in it. I am rather short and have to have the seat close to the steering wheel, so its difficult getting in and out of the car without banging my knees on the steering column. That is the only problem that I have with the car. It drives in the mountains very well, even passes some of the SUVs on the way up! The seats are very comfortable and provide good back support. Its fun to drive and I enjoy getting 40- 55 mpg. It would be nice to have a remote trunk opener, though.
