A host of minor changes bring the Civic into 2003. On the inside, all models gain improved seat fabrics, rear adjustable outboard headrests and new four-spoke steering wheels. On HX, LX and EX Civics, you'll find improved gauge illumination. There's a new center console for LX and EX, and a CD player is standard for HX and LX. On the outside, the 2003 Honda Civic has freshened taillamps and new wheel designs. Also, there is a Hybrid Civic available for the 2003 model year.

Pros:
  • Fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engines, roomy interior, reputation for durability, impressive crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Antilock brakes not available on DX or LX.

  • Not worth the premium - 2003 Honda Civic
    By -

I bought my 2003 Honda Hybrid new. All told I think it was $35k. Paying a premium on the car because it was a hybrid, the tax deduction and the gas savings would make up for the extra cost right? Well, for the past year it has been sitting in our driveway with a busted transmission. $4500 to replace it. This is the latest in a long string of recalls/replacements on this car. Luckily, our other fixes have been covered by Honda but this fix is not. We look at the blue book value of this car, and seriously question if it is worth fixing especially when we read other reviews of cars that have gone through multiple transmissions and other fixes. For the price, I expected better.

  • Beware: Battery goes right after warranty - 2003 Honda Civic
    By -

Just a warning to those looking at this car. I bought in 2002 (2003 model) and have been the only owner for just over 8 years. Five months past the warranty, the battery failed and now I have to pay $3000 to have it replaced. The car has less that 80,000 miles, but because Ive owned it over eight years, the warranty has expired. This is simply too much of an expense to be reasonable or fair. It certainly doesnt justify the gas savings. I am very disappointed in Honda and will not buy another one, because of this experience.

  • Great on gas & safety, poor quality - 2003 Honda Civic

This is the most uncomfortable car on the market the seats are small and hard. The arm rests are rock hard. Ive run into many quality issues such as the body metal is so thin, it wrinkles and dents almost if a bug hit it.

  • Beware CVT Transmission - 2003 Honda Civic
    By -

This car gets good gas mileage (43-45 mpg actual) but suffers from several flaws I see as related to being the first model year of a unique (hybrid) car. Recalls on the exhaust system software (that led to me having 2 catalytic converters replaced before corrected) and the transmission (CVT failed at 102k before Honda extended the warranty to 100k - gee, thanks for the $3800 bill-NOT) have shaken my confidence in Honda quality. My hybrid now has 130k miles and runs well with its new transmission, but I would by the Prius if I had it to do all over again. Acceleration is lacking, to the point of dangerous with 4 riders at highway speed, and overall rattles etc. are disappointing.

  • 4 Transmissions to date!!!! - 2003 Honda Civic
    By -

We bought our 03 Hybrid Civic new we currently have put 105,XXX miles on it. The transmission "judder" started at 22,XXX miles, had that trans replaced (w/a rebuilt one) at 25,XXX miles, then that was replaced at 35,XXX (w/a new one) & received a extended warranty for 75,XXX miles for that one. Now we have just got the car back with a remanufactured Trans at 105,XXX miles. We are not able to get any help from American Honda The current "Case Carrier" is a snide, rude, arrogant. The dealer is going to do his best to help. If anyone has a similar story or good contacts to help please let us know, to ALL who read Honda "reputation for reliability" is GONE!!

  • Lacks power - 2003 Honda Civic
    By -

This car is without a doubt is a fun car to drive, but it lacks power like some of Hondas other models (such the 02 S2000) but I guess what can you expect when you get a car like this for under $13,999...over all I give it a rating of 4.5 out of 10.

  • Trouble free huh? - 2003 Honda Civic
    By -

I purchased the Civic a year ago and it now has 28,000 miles. It has had quite a few problems, which Hoindas supposedly dont ever have. There was a clicking noise that took 3 dealership visits for them to fix. There is also a noise the enging makes in second gear which the dealer has not fixed after 2 visits. Seats are rather uncomfortable and the ride is loud. Doubt I will buy another Honda again.

  • DONT BUY A HONDA - 2003 Honda Civic
    By -

Front bumper chipping & rear trunk peeling. Body dents way too easily & has flimsy bumpers. Tires have terrible traction (firestone). Turning ratio is too small. Engine is gutless (no get up and go without redlining the engine). Dash always rattles when cold. Cheap cloth for interior. Substandard radio and speakers. Suspension and shocks are way to stiff (feel everything on the road). Small gas tank (fill every 3-4 days). Mats and trunk liner do not fit correctly for OEM. Transmission jerks when slowing down abruptly. Seat comfort is minimal.
