This Year's Model Updates:

Ford's AdvanceTrac electronic stability control that was previously available on V8 models only is now available on all models, except the XLS and XLS Sport and all AWD models. The NBX version now comes standard with the off-road package and "NBX" tailgate badging, and can be ordered with a moonroof. Limited and Eddie Bauer models get a quad bucket seating option when equipped with the third-row bench, which adds second-row buckets and a floor console. Family buyers of the 2004 Ford Explorer should note that the optional rear air conditioner no longer requires the purchase of the third-row seat. Finally, a tire-pressure monitoring system is now standard on XLS Sport and higher trim levels, and a rear cargo shade is optional on XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited models.

Pros:
  • Excellent ride and handling characteristics for a truck-based SUV, strong optional V8, comfortable cabin with user-friendly layout and seating for up to seven, good crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Dull cabin design with some low-grade materials, low resale value, confusing controls on highline models, lousy fuel economy.

The all-wheel drive Eddie Bauer 2004 Explorer with the 4.6 V-8 is about the BEST all-around SUV on the road. The power is responsive yet smooth. The handling is quick yet precise, and the build quality is second to none. Thats why the Explorer is the Worlds BEST selling SUV-its simply the BEST value for the money!

Great vehicle, fun to drive on all roads and in all weather. Wonderful utility, best utility of any mfg in type class. Good service experience at dealer. Reasonable economy for this type vehicle given what is available on the market today. Has Class II hitch and tow package, handles trailers very well. Great brakes - lasted 50,000 miles before replacing pads on front, rears still on. Great overall vehicle and we checked all makes prior to buying this Ford product.

It is fun to drive but Ford keeps lowering the tow rating on the Explorer and it is becoming a less usable tow unit for a home owner with a family of 4.

I had a 1994 Limited and had absolutely no problems with it....from the top of Pikes Peak to Death Valley and towing two horses through the snow....this car did it all. So why switch? Bought another.

We bought this vehicle in October 2000. It has proven to be a very reliable family vehicle. Great for road trips, hauling large or many items. It has ample leg room for adults in the back seat and is by far the favorite vehicle to ride in or drive in our family. My daughter has said that because of the smooth ride this vehicle has, she does not experience car sickness when riding in the back seat as compared to riding in the back seat of her friends car. This vehicle is a complete dream to own and drive.
