This Year's Model Updates:

Ford's AdvanceTrac electronic stability control that was previously available on V8 models only is now available on all models, except the XLS and XLS Sport and all AWD models. The NBX version now comes standard with the off-road package and "NBX" tailgate badging, and can be ordered with a moonroof. Limited and Eddie Bauer models get a quad bucket seating option when equipped with the third-row bench, which adds second-row buckets and a floor console. Family buyers of the 2004 Ford Explorer should note that the optional rear air conditioner no longer requires the purchase of the third-row seat. Finally, a tire-pressure monitoring system is now standard on XLS Sport and higher trim levels, and a rear cargo shade is optional on XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited models.

Pros:
  • Excellent ride and handling characteristics for a truck-based SUV, strong optional V8, comfortable cabin with user-friendly layout and seating for up to seven, good crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Dull cabin design with some low-grade materials, low resale value, confusing controls on highline models, lousy fuel economy.

Very comfortable, pleasing to the eye, V-6 has more than adequate power for driving and passing, have not had a trailer behind it yet. Third row seat a must for family vehicle. Audio system has very "professional" sound.

The Eddie Bauer is definetely worth the extra money. Traded in an XLT, loved it, but this one is awesome with all the extras.

I am now used to sitting higher. This is a great vehicle. I have 3600 miles on it and no complaints. I have been able to haul things that I couldnt with my car. I am averaging 20mpg.

  • Minor problem but overall great vehicle - 2004 Ford Explorer

The only problem I have had is a rear axle that whined like some of the "Fords & Chevys of old". Ford is replacing the rear axle form one the dealership had in stock. I believe there must be an ongoing problem with this part because I do not believe a dealership normally has a specific rear axle sitting around in their parts shop unless they expect to change a certain amount. Cheaper than a recall? Other than that this vehicle is a true pleasure to drive and the workmanship and fit and tinish is far above average. I would highly recommend one of these vehicles, but listen closely for that axle whine.

Great vehicle! Subtly stylish, very comfortable, all with superior driving dynamics. Not too big on the outside, with major people/cargo capacity inside. Stable and predictable handling, even when driven very hard- moves very well for its size and weight. Unmatched on- road feel. Everyone who has driven it loves it. The size, safety features and crash test scores make me feel very safe driving it. I live on the coast and it does well off-roading on the beach. So far its holding up just fine, I have some minor issues but they are all covered by TSBs. Switch to full synthetic oil at first change; engine will sound much better during startup and under load.
