This Year's Model Updates:

The 1999 Toyota Tacoma gets new front seat belt pre-tensioners and force limiters. Optional on Xtra Cab models is an AM/FM four-speaker CD audio system while 4x4s get 15-by-7-inch steel wheels. The PreRunner adds a regular cab option to its model mix. Natural White, Imperial Jade Mica and Horizon Blue Metallic replace White, Copper Canyon Mica, Evergreen Pearl and Cool Steel Metallic as color options.

Pros:
Cons:
  • Like most Toyotas, the price rises quickly once you start adding options that most truck buyers would require on even a basic truck.

  • First Truck - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

I bought this Tacoma used, but it was in great condition. I love driving it around town. 2.7L engine is peppy with the 5-speed. The highway is not a fun experience. Alot of rattles and shakes. NO RUST whatsoever. Perfect for off-roading. I would recommend it to anyone who just needs an around-the- town truck or weekend work truck.

  • Little beast of a truck - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

I have used this truck to pull a 2500 lb. trailer 100s of miles every weekend for the last 3 years. The only parts I have had to replace are the clutch, tires, ball joints and shocks. If I had not towed so much weight (probably more than the intended towing capacity) Im sure I would not have had to replace the clutch, ball joints or shocks. This thing has been one hell of a little beast for getting the job done. I have just replaced it for my towing purposes with a three quarter ton van. I sure couldnt have towed my trailer with any other manufacturers 4 cylinder mini truck. Toyota rules this market.

  • Great truck for the $ - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

I bought this baby brand new in 1999. This is a very powerful 2.4 lt 4 cyl engine. I used to tow a 20 Commander jet sky boat 3500 lbs from Corona, CA to the Colorado river and I was amazed at this great little truck pulling avility. It has over 80K miles and all I had to replace was tires and front brakes. What more can you ask for?

  • 205,000 miles still rolling - 1999 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I bought this new from a dealership in 1999 trading in my 1996 Tacoma with 300,000}+ miles on it (should have kept it as back up it was still running great but was STD cab) This truck has been through 2 front end collisions one costing over $16,000 in damages, two side hits and one roll down a hill! It has spent many months in body shops. Regardles of how hard I beat it to death it still keeps going. Ive had to replace the clutch at 200k which was the first major part excluding parts replaced in accidents. All in all I will never buy another make or model. Hopefully Toyota will see this and send me one for my family of 5. Its a bit cramped! Ill drive it to death & then try to buy another

  • Your Best Bet - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

Yes, it does cost a little more but it is worth every penny. This truck has not let me down in any way. From build quality to MPG it is a winner. My father has an S-10 that was purchased at the same time in 1999 and his has been in the shop 5 times. My Taco has only seen the inside of a shop for routine maintenance. By the way, get the TRD package if you can find it. Better ride, better off-road, more options.

  • Small gripes - 1999 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I was thinking all all the things I dont like about this truck, and they were all minor. When Im worried about things like cupholder size and take for granted the engine, transmission, etc I have to admit Im nitpicking! My truck has 45,000 miles on it and has been in for repair.... well once something does break Ill tell you about it! (My 94 Grand Cherokee, on the other hand, is a money pit)

  • 1999 Tacoma Prerunner 2dr std cab - 1999 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Have owned truck 3 years. Only problem was dead battery. Dealer sent serviceman to mall lot to start car and replaced battery at dealership, total time two hours. Truck cab is small and seats could be more padded for long trips. Speed control is appreciated on highway. has been great truck. springs could have been stronger, very small load capacity. Would consider new one same model.

  • Soild truck - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

Great truck. Quiet on the highway, handles nicely. It may be 2wd but this thing flies through the dessert and off road. The locking read differential is great if you get stuck. Great daily driver. Very comfortable.

  • Unbreakable - 1999 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

This truck is absolutely indestructible. Ive tried to break it, but Ive come up short. I redline at least 5 times a day, I hop curbs and other onroad obstacles constantly, I offroad whenever possible, and I cruise at 85+ mph just to make it work. The truck refuses to die. This is my third tacoma and I was hoping the third time would be charm. Guess Ill have to invest in the old Silverado if I want to break something.

  • A few minor complaints - 1999 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Well, for starters, the truck hasnt let me down yet [knock on wood]! I love the styling on the exterior, although the interior can use a little work. The major complaint is the jerk that happens when you let go off the brake sometimes. I havent figured out whether it is related to transmission (my best guess), or the breaks. The dealer says there is nothing wrong. The gear shifter also moves slightly by itself when I drive (voodoo, I suppose). Road noise can be a bit of a problem, but thats expected with the tires that big. Positives: great AC, fine handling, superb off-road capabilities, lots of room for a "compact" truck, rear- locking is always good.
