  • Great SUV, but hybrid may not be worth it - 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The Highlander Hybrid is comfortable and looks great inside and out. The "hybrid" part so far is a big disappointment in terms of performance and gas mileage. On long drives, we have simply decided to forego Eco Mode and avoid what feels like a battle between car and driver otherwise. Our gas mileage so far has been 25.5mpg at best and 19mpg at worst during a long trip between northern and southern California. Eco mode on the long trip only improved this by 2mpg. So, unless you need to cross the 6,000gvwr for business reasons, I don;t see any advantage to the hybrid.

We ordered a 2017 Highlander Hybrid XLE in November 2016 and received it in early December 2016. We immediately took off on a 1000 mi trip to Oregon. Overall we are very happy with the purchase. Dealership service was good, the SUV drives well and we got 26.5 MPG for the 2000 miles round trip through interstate 5 during winter blizzards going and coming back. Our previous SUV was an Acura MDX which on the same trip averaged only about 19 MPG so we are please with the gas mileage. Since then in overall Southern Cal driving in mixed city and freeway trips, we averaged over 30 MPG. During our trip through the California/Oregon mountains during winter blizzards we found out that the Safety Features stopped working when the sensors were covered by snows and mud. So at the time we needed them, they stopped working unless we cleaned the snows/mud off the sensors. Otherwise all the safety features worked as advertised. Only other problem is the Toyota lane assist worked but the design was stupid: It behaved like a "drunken sailer" bouncing from one side to the other if we did not correct the drifting off the center of the lane and relied on the lane assist. Overall we give it a 5 star SUV.

  • Excellent family-hauler with a few flaws - 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Lots going for the Highlander Hybrid: unmatched fuel economy (in class), AWD, comfortable interior, and great reliability. Ride is soft, smooth and quiet. Handling is numb; not for spirited driving. Active Safety Sense features (standard) seem to work well and are non-obtrusive, though I havent really experienced the pre-collision system. Toyotas Entune+Navigation system seems quite dated; wish they would just support Apple Carplay / Android Auto. (At least Bluetooth works well.) Also considered the Honda Pilot EX-L (AWD), but I got the Hybrid XLE for almost the same price, and have no regrets!

Very well built, get the platinum edition! I wish it had a remote start system, larger gas tank and a truly automatic rain sensing wipers.

  • Good family appliance with a few shortcomings - 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Its great that Toyota made the Hybrid available with a 2nd row bench seat again and dropped the price of entry / premium over gas model, but they still missed a few tricks in my opinion. OK, so the standard active safety tech across the whole range for 2017 is great, but I wish I could have front and rear parking sensors with the 2nd row bench seat - I believe you have to step up to the Limited Platinum to get them and those models are only available with 2nd row captains chairs on the Hybrid, even though the bench seat is now an option on the gas versions. The ability to easily/inadvertently turn off daytime running lights seems to somewhat defeat the purpose and no high intensity headlight option is available even for the fully loaded models unlike the CX-9. Lack of Android Auto/Apple CarPlay also nearly chased me into the arms of a Honda Pilot. Overall though Im pleased with the purchase and in a mix of almost 1000 city/highway miles so far the computer is recording 27MPG.

  • Glad we waited! - 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

This is my wifes car. She drives mostly local and we wanted an SUV that is fuel efficient, good size, comfortable and has good power. We started looking about 2 years ago. We looked at the Subaru Outlook 3.5R, Honda Pilot and the Highlander. We picked the Highlander, but unfortunately, 1 to 2 years ago, it was only offered in the Limited and above trim which meant it was going to cost about 50k. When the 2017 Highlander Hybrid got released, I was really glad that they now offer it in a lower trim. I searched for a while, but finally found a dealership in LA, CA that was willing to order the SUV in exact interior and exterior color and accessories and they gave me a discount off MSRP. There were absolutely no Hybrid XLE in stock in San Diego. We are very happy with our SUV and very glad that we waited. Great gas mileage, very comfortable, outstanding stereo and love the Toyota Safety Sense package!

  • Hard to Find Hybrids - 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Great overall ride, comfortable seating. Navigation and Bluetooth drive me nuts like every other car with these features. No CarPlay. 3rd row pretty cramped, but fine for smaller kids. Overall, hybrid mileage not what they claim and I owned a Prius for 10 years prior, so I am pretty adept at driving hybrids. Ill follow up in 10 years when i am ready to buy another!
