This Year's Model Updates:

Mercury reintroduces the Cougar this year after a one-year hiatus that saw the departure of most of Ford Motor Co.'s personal coupes. The new model is built on the Mondeo global platform that is also the basis for the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique. This new coupe is powered by the same engine choices as the Contour/Mystique, which means that buyers can choose between a zippy Zetec four-cylinder and a high-revving Duratec V6.

Pros:
  • Built on one of our favorite platforms with zippy engine choices and unique styling.
Cons:
  • The Flat Rock, Michigan plant where the Cougar is being assembled is not known for screwing together the tightest cars in the world, so reliability may be a sore spot with owners used to Japanese cars.

  • The worst car I ever owned!!! - 1999 Mercury Cougar

What a relief!!!.... I just got rid of my Cougar. That was the worst car I ever owned. The radio replaced three times (and still doesnt work); windows leak; windshield replaced; dashboard sqeaks; alternater replaced; in addition to the numerous factory recalls. In one year alone I had to bring this car back to the dealer 13 times.

  • Hot Car-Couple BIG problems - 1999 Mercury Cougar

Ive had my 99 V6 just under 4 years with few problems. But a couple repairs would have been costly had I not purchased the extended warranty. I LOVE the look, the drive is Great! It corners tight. It is the best car I have EVER driven on ice and even snow. The biggest problem is the seats. All of the seats are tremendously uncomfortable and you could not take this car on a long trip. Because of the low-slung design, the blind corner in the rear side is larger than other sport cars. The remote trunk hatch did not work for 3 years - was replaced many times. My headlights did leak water and had to be replaced.

I have had not problems with my Cougar. I love the styling and enjoy driving it. Great gas mileage for a V6 and I costantly get admiring glances. Very fast and good sound system too. I know many people report problems, but I have yet to see them. I purchased a 99 with 27,000 miles cheap and I LOVE IT!

I just got the car and so far have only two complaints about it. 1... The sagging doors. Pins cannot be replaced I have to actually buy complete hinges for it. 2... The sun/moonroof clips broke and its impossible to find parts for this car. My Cougar currently has 200,650 miles on it with a five-speed V6 and runs strong. The computer claims 27.3mpg so Im going to actually perform my own calculations to see if its correct or not. Car is a good car and I intend on putting many many more miles on it. Maybe Ill make 300k who knows!!

The cougar is a nice looking car. It handles and rides well, but is underpowered, and overmatched by little japanese 4-cylinders. Of all Sport coupes, this is probably the nicest and more of a nice sporty car to cruise in.

I absolutely love this car. ive had it since january 2004 and it has absolutely nothing wrong with it. It drives great and is a fun car to drive. Great car for beginner drivers (as it was mine) and every age after that. A+++

  • Fun but had problems - 1999 Mercury Cougar

Fun car to drive, relatively quick and handles very well. Major complaints involve the electrical system (fuses, switches, spark plugs/wires etc.) which failed rather often. Car went through brakes very frequently. No major repairs to the engine. Most repairs involved interior components, electrical system and the exhaust system. (2 catalytic converters were replaced)

  • Would not suggest this car to anyone - 1999 Mercury Cougar

alternator has gone 4 times in the year and a half...need a new high pressure power steering hose at 6ok miles new rack n pinion new tie end rods ect.

  • Not a Ford man but I like my Cougar. - 1999 Mercury Cougar

Bought with Sport Package option which means the 16" tires, V-6, sport cloth interior, fog lights, spoiler, rear wiper and 4-wheel disc brakes. This car also came with ABS, auto, and traction control. We have had it for 5000 miles and have yet to put a dime into it. The road noise was a bit much but I switch from the Firehawk tires to Dunlop SP Sport A2s and it is extremely quiet now. The windows tend to creak but this is because they dont have a window frame.
