This Year's Model Updates:

Mercury reintroduces the Cougar this year after a one-year hiatus that saw the departure of most of Ford Motor Co.'s personal coupes. The new model is built on the Mondeo global platform that is also the basis for the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique. This new coupe is powered by the same engine choices as the Contour/Mystique, which means that buyers can choose between a zippy Zetec four-cylinder and a high-revving Duratec V6.

Pros:
  • Built on one of our favorite platforms with zippy engine choices and unique styling.
Cons:
  • The Flat Rock, Michigan plant where the Cougar is being assembled is not known for screwing together the tightest cars in the world, so reliability may be a sore spot with owners used to Japanese cars.

I have had my Cougar for 5 years now and I have no major complaints. I have had the alternator replaced and some computer problems with the dash, but overall I have been pleased and feel I have gotten my monies worth out of it despite some problems that needed to be fixed.

I got this car used on October 20 of this year. I havent had many problems with it, other than my heater core on it is broken and it sometimes leaks transmission fluid. But other than that I love this car. The engine is so much fun to listen to. Its pretty fast for a 2.5 V6. Everything works fine in the car. It has a pretty decent sound system, but Im looking to put some 12s in it. The only problem is that I drive long distances sometimes and I worry about my engine over-heating with my transmission fluid leaking, but other than that Im very happy with the performance and stability of this car. And Im glad its what I got for my first car.

I owned the car for 5 years till somebody lost the load they were hauling on the highway. It was a total loss. The car ran beautifully at all times. And obviously a safe car for the road. I walked away without a scratch from the accident. I would recommend owning this car for almost anyone that enjoys a small sporty car without the sports car insurance rates. The seats were always comfortable and held up to the wear of 20k miles a year.

i can not tell you how bad this car is...i bought it used with 65000 miles on it thinking that it wouldnt give me any problems, because i knew someone who owned one. the repair list is as follows: the tie rod ends went on the car. my mechanic was suprised that i was actually able to drive it without the front axel dropping out. the steering rack went, along with the starter that had to be replaced 2x. and now my mechanic thinks the flywheel needs to be replaced. the sunroof broke, and i had to fix it myself, cause i think youre out of your mind if you are gonna spend over $1000 to get it fixed. the upper and lower intake manifolds went and had to be replaced along with the gaskets.

  • Not So Great, But Not Terrible - 1999 Mercury Cougar

I have had my Cougar for two years now. I am very ready to sell it. The transmission is slipping, the struts are going bad, the passenger window is breaking, its rusting, and the radio is poor. I have had to do quite a few repairs on this car. I have had to get new tires, whole new braking system, new shocks, like a few different, expensive things done to the motor. My service receipt pile is quite large. My car is currently in the shop for a blockage that isnt allowing coolant to get through so its over heating. I have heard worse stories however. I guess maybe mine is just getting old. Its a 99 with 122,222 miles on it and it had been wrecked previously.

Bought it as a Mechanics special... The spark plugs were fouled... That was it. Runs and looks great. I didnt think I would like it. Even with 129,00 miles on it it drives like new... Amazing

A fantastic Car. Been nearly a year since I bought it. Only expenses have been gas and oil. Great on long drives, sporty get up and go, and a head turner in all ways. Only real con for me, gas mileage not as high as I would like it ( 35 per canadian gallon or about 28 per US gallon), but that could be due to my heavy right foot.

Ive had my Cougar for 3 years and have spent close to $5000 in repairs (numerous calls to Ford customer service for financial assistance were completely blown off). My radio has gone out three times and the last time burnt through the left channel destroying the entire system. I couldnt stomach the $600 to replace it so I go without. I have had so many problems with this vehicle I cant list them all. Both power window regulators, alternator, catalytic converter, wheel bearings, starter, power hatch release, radio, sensors, etc. Ive never been more dissatisfied with a car. Save yourself! Dont buy this car!
