This Year's Model Updates:

Jaguar's premium sedan receives only minor content changes for 2001. The XJ8 and XJ8 L both receive a six-disc CD changer as standard equipment. The Vanden Plas gets a premium sound system with the CD changer as standard, as well as heated front and rear seats. The navigation system is standard on the Vanden Plas Supercharged. For all models, Jaguar has added a new reverse parking control system and strengthened the chassis with new crush tubes, doors, hinges and steering columns. There are also new exterior colors, a new style of wheel for Vanden Plas models and an optional dealer-installed Motorola Timeport digital phone. Topping things off is a new no-cost scheduled maintenance program that covers four regular service visits under the four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty.

Pros:
  • Classic exterior styling, classic interior styling and materials, supercharged engine in XKR and Vanden Plas Supercharged.
Cons:
  • Somewhat cramped interior dimensions, sparse feature list, aging platform.

I leased the car. I knew I was going to buy it at the end of the lease. It looks great, rides wonderful. It uses a qt of oil every 800 miles. Jaguar says that is normal. The mechanics say the XJ8 engine has a bad breather system and the part load breather needs to be cleaned all the time. I dont reaaly know what they are saying.I know the engine is also in the S an option, and XK. They are replacing engines but you really need to complain. I didnt buy.

I leased my car, knowing I would purchase after 2 years. The car looks great and rides perfect. It uses a great deal of oil. (1 qt every 800 miles) The dealer says it is normal. The mechanis say the xj8 engine has serious problems with the breather system. Engines are being replaced in the XK S (an option) as well as XJ8.I decided not to keep it, my independant mechanic said dont buy it, it will get worse. I am very disappointed with Jaguar, I still like the car, not the engine.

  • Best deal! - 2001 Jaguar XJ-Series

Bought a used low mileage Jag - now owned it for a year and 15K. NO problems at all. Drives and handles beautifully, and draws looks and comments. I am shocked to find that with snow tires the handling is excellent on snow and ice. (a previous Jag I had was not a good winter handler) LOVE IT! Its a beautifully sculpted car that stands out from the crowd of jellybeans.

  • Not a Primary Car - 2001 Jaguar XJ-Series

The XJ8L is sublimely comfortable for front seat passengers - and moreso for those in the back. But dont buy this car if youre going to use it every day to commute in. The fact that it is an "L" model makes it incredibly difficult to park. Guzzles gas like crazy. Guzzles oil like crazy. TERRIBLE BRAKES! They started squealing after about 2000 miles. Expensive luxury cars like this should not have brakes that scream like banshees. Had brake pads ground still didnt fix it. Had brakes replaced for $800 and it isnt as loud but it is still a noticeable squeal. Wood panels on doors feel loose. Generally bad ergonomics.

Bought in Canada and stuck with a speedo calibrated in klicks. Replaced front shocks two years ago. Replacing rear shocks this month. Transient engine shutdown dealer cannot diagnose... goes into failsafe mode. An outstanding car that lives up to all of its hype and more. Would not drive anything else. Performance for a 5,000 lb car is incredible. Pirelli P6 are ok for summer. Must use Blizzak for winter... makes it go like a tank in the snow.

  • The Last "Real" Jaguar Sedan - 2001 Jaguar XJ-Series
    By -

Ford owned Jaguar when this car was on the drawing boards, but left the Brits alone to create the last "Lyons-era" big Jaguar saloon, 100% British in components, design, and construction. The result is the finest XJ ever. Its low-slung (5" lower than todays luxury cars) and gorgeous. In the best Jaguar tradition, this big sedan is silky, quiet, and fast. Only a handful of supercharged VDPs are produced by Jaguar every year, and all are pre-sold. Supercharged VDPs are the ultimate Jaguars, and this generation of XJs is the finest of the breed. Tightening safety and fuel economy standards mean well never see cars like this again.

  • I LIKE the car - 2001 Jaguar XJ-Series

I LIKE the car a lot. Great stereo, great comfort, great accelleration when you want to pass, and you can pass anyone doing less than 150 mph. Whats not to like.

  • finally got one! - 2001 Jaguar XJ-Series

The thing looks like its doing a hundred just sitting at the curb, and it definitely stands out in a sea of bubble cars. Soaks up the bumps better than even old Detroit sedans did, and yet is really a fine road car in the twists and turns. The reviewers like to say the XJ doesnt communicate with you like the German sedans. Theyre wrong. Seating position is great...you sit low, just like in an old sports car to really get that sensation of speed. Though regular XJ8s are cramped, the VDP is not. Definitely the way to go. Dont get this car if you want to go around town anonymously!

  • 01 XJ8L - A good buy for me - 2001 Jaguar XJ-Series

Has met every expectation. No customary brake problems (luck?). Smooth transmission. No oil leaks even at 72,000 miles. Occasional little nuisances crop up: auto tilt mirror failed to auto tilt, fixed by removing and reinserting all fuses in back seat kick panels (none were blown). Outstanding handling in snow w/4 very aggressive snow tires (forget all-seasons). Uses a little more oil than a car of this price range ever should (1 qt about 1,000 miles). Lack of a local dealer will influence me to trade below 100,000 miles.
