Having owned a probe v6 gt for 12 years, I must say its been really reliable as a day to day driver. The only problem, which caused the car not to start, was a faulty distributor module, which is an integral part of the Mitsubishi distributor used in these vehicles, {a known problem} once replaced at 163,000 km the car is running really well. I made it a habit to flush the oil at 20k intervals, while servicing the car at 5000klm intervals, and I only use Mobil 1 5w- 50 synthetic oil, k and n oil and air filters, and castrol synthetic 75w gear oil. The flush I use for the engine is liquid moly, and is very effective, hence no lifter noise! I replaced the cam belt, idlers, water pump and plugs, re book.

  • Should I have the water pump replaced? - 1996 Ford Probe

This car has been fantastic. Now I have my 1st original part to replace per maintenance - the timing belt at now 60,000 miles. The mechanic suggested doing the water pump also, but there is no indication of wear or imminent failure. A logical suggestion, but are water pumps a problem with this car? I drove it down to the local classic car/hot-rod parade and got waved into it. There were people asking how it could be a Ford (never seen one). They could not believe Ford made such a good looking car. I am the original owner and ordered 5-speed manual, hot-rod red, 16" wide/chrome wheels. It still gets lots of looks. Nothing corners as well as this car - freaks people out.

  • Nice Little CarÂ… - 1996 Ford Probe

Shes a nice little car, but lately shes been trying to nickel-and-dime me like crazy. Ive got an oil leak somewhere, warm air is intermittent, the Airbag light intermittently flashes, the left side stereo speakers dont work 99% of the time.

I bought this car for 2,500 back in may and have had to spend another 3,000 in repairs. its turning into such a hassle. when its running good its a great car. pretty quick, very good handling, but once again not very reliable.

  • Fun, nice looking repair prone car - 1996 Ford Probe

I bought my GT new. While it is a great looking vehicle ive had a few problems. Recently had the top and lower idler pulleys in the engine go. That would have been fatal for the engine without a little luck. At 50,000 miles I had the ignition distributor assembly go. The engine just shut off in rush hour traffic. $700 for remanufactred part. Radiator in 04. Water pump in 03. Spark plug wire set in 02. R/F and L/F axles in 03. The rear lift on the hatch loses it,s ability to stay up. Had that fixed before. The car leaks coolant and a little oil. My mechanic says dont worry about it cause its not worth fixing. I know the car is old but it has only 60,000 miles on it. Fun to drive.

  • Decent car if you got money to fix it - 1996 Ford Probe

I bought my SE 2 years ago and it has been burning oil ever since. Fortunately by adding about a quart a week Ive been able to keep it running. It is very very fun to drive. I work at a Nissan dealer so Ive gotten to drive a 350Z, and I think my Probe handles better. It does have an upgraded suspension and has been lowered by 2 inches, so that helps. I have also always put high performance all season tires on it. Im not given enough letters to explain all the things Ive had to, or that I need to do. I think itll be cheaper to get a V6 and transmission rather than trying to replace everything under the hood thats going bad. Overall its a great car if you are prepared to fix it all the time.

I got my Probe GT 08/2007 and Ive put over 40,000 miles on it only having to change the oil and put gas in it. But it does only get 17 or 18 mpg and its still running like new still to this day

  • Best thing I have owned sense my 70 Mav - 1996 Ford Probe

I purchased my SE in Nov 2005 and this car has done nothing short of giving me its all. I tested it on the highway and it got 37MPG 5speed standard is the only way to go with one of these cars. I have sense then installed a turbo upgrade from a Mazda 626 kit that makes this little car a tiny monster. I am pushing 300HP at the front wheels and still get 30MPG when I drive it like I have some sense. The only car that I have ever owned that came clse to as much fun as this little car is my 1970 Maverick that I put a 1969 302 BOSS in. If you can find one in standard shift it is worth buying for a single person to get around in. Dont have any room in the back seat for anyone older than 7or 8

Ive had my Probe SE for two and half years now, and I have loved the car. I have, although, had many problems with repairs. I have spent more money on repairs than I have to buy the car. The exterior has very nice styling other than the SE rims. The interior is very nice and comfortable, and the visibility is perfect. I would say the biggest plus to this car is the handling. It honestly handles like a dream. It is overall a solid car despite the constant repairs.
