This Year's Model Updates:

Changes are minimal for the XC90's second year on the market. All models get wheel and tire upgrades -- 2.5Ts will wear 225/70R17 rubber and T6s will wear 235/65R17 rubber, but both get the same 17-inch "Neptune" wheels. Ice White is a new exterior color choice. Stand-alone options now include a wood steering wheel, aluminum dash inlays and a leather shift knob.

Pros:
  • Safe as a bank vault, plush ride, feels smaller than it is, high-quality interior materials, ample cargo room.
Cons:
  • Turbocharged T6 engine not well suited to SUV duty, third-row seating takes up too much second-row space.

I am somewhat pleased with my XC90. I love the body style, the handling, the ease of controls and I have had absolutley no maintenance issues so far. I didnt realize how much I would miss the driver arm rests and I am surprised at how noisy and bumpy the ride is for the price of this car. My first choice was the Lexus Gx but was way out of my price range. The gas mileage on the XC90 is not that great either. I did find out however that it is okay to use regular unleaded in it. I put mid-grade in mine and performs well. If I had it to do over I would have liked to have looked at the new 330. I am reluctant to buy new models but have a friend who loves her.

  • A great vehicle but lots of repairs - 2004 Volvo XC90

I came on this website because i have a bad dealership working on my XC90 T6 and want to inform other buyers. I have had it in the shop 4 times and the same problems keep recurring. The last problem was the seat which moves 1/4- 1/3 of on inch upon stopping and the dealership admits problem but wont replace the seat. I have a BMW 528 and E320 and bought Volvo for its reliability. Brakes have drag against the drum until mod was performed. Squeeking in front left strut upon turning. Interior molding has come loose or has been broken under normal wear. Car is costly but I expected better quality from Volvo. I say one thing - Buyer beware!

we have put all but 23 miles on this vehicle and are not unhappy. 5 cylinder is a bit noisy on hard acceleration but we change the oil when due, put gas in the tank and drive. still has original battery, did do the 105000 maintenance. at 70000 put front break pads on. just put the 3rd set of tires on last august this vehicle can carry a lot of stuff. the back seats are rather flat so no comfortable for long trips however like ivory soap, only two of us ride in the think 99.44%of the time. we can get 2 bicycles in but it is a hassle so they go on top. only if i go by myself do a bike go inside. expect to drive at least another 100000 miles before retiring

The car is a little tight for my 6 2" height. Next to impossible to reach into the back seat and deal with baby in a middle car seat facing backwards. This is due to the head rest. You feel well protected on a cold rainy day. Car is tight and solid on the road. Gives me a peace of mind knowing that my wife and two babies are in what I feel is one of the safest vehicles on the road.

This is our 6th Volvo. Smooth and comfortable on the highway. We keep up with the maintenance and have the transmission fluid flushed annually. Best mileage was 23.4 mpg on the highway with premium 93. Most filling stations add 10% ethanol now which has lowered our fuel economy averages.

  • Just bought the T6 AWD XC-90 - 2004 Volvo XC90

We compared this car with the Lexus RX330. Both were great. The Lexus has better luxury features and the Volvo is more rugged. Unfortunately, Lexus couldnt touch Volvos price. I do like the car and it is fun to drive, but for the high price of the car, it would be nice to have the upgraded luxuries as standard. Add a towing hitch, running boards, or navigation and get ready to pay pretty penny. Running boards alone=$850. Also, turbo chargers make a loud whistling noise which dealer says is unavoidable.

  • Versatile, fun, well-constructed........ - 2004 Volvo XC90

We use our thrid row seats infrequently, but when we do....sure nice to have. The vehicle is solid as a rock, it drives very car-like and the engine is spirited, though it probably could use another 25hp. I wish we had purchased the navigation system.....would have been a fun accessory. The sound system is amazingly good once programmed, but trust me, to unlock all of the audio features you have to spend 2 hours on the setup.

Fund car to drive and great looking . The worst gas mileage possible and a small gas tank to boot . Wipers ceased to function in the snow and the vovlo roadside is useless on weekends as the dealership is closed on Sunday ....

  • Volvo For Life-What a Joke - 2004 Volvo XC90

The XC90 is my 7th Volvo & will be my last.At 60,000 mile service the check engine light came on & the dealer replaced the mass airflow sensor for $600.00. The next day after the repair, the check engine light came on again, the dealer told me the oil trap needed to be replaced, a $1200.00 repair. I found out from a Volvo mechanic that if the mass airflow sensor was bad, the XC90 would barely run, It was running fine when I brought it in. After finding out that Suburban Volvo charged me $60.00 higher then list price for the sensor. I contacted Volvo customer service & they told me that the dealer was independent & could charge what they wanted. She said Volvo would not help.

The car is outstanding on long trips except that it seems to need refills more than I would like. Would like a bigger tank. Also the mid range power from 20-45mph is a little too torquey and you need to baby the gas pedal. Otherwise the car is super quiet and easy to drive. Especially like the seats and my upgraded wooden steering wheel. Drove the toureg first and got a backache. Feels like quality all over. The extra row of seats has been handy and folds down when not needed. Solid car and when I want to take it on curvy roads, it can feel like a sports car. Have not tested off road or in snow yet.
